The elevator going down is a symbolism of going to hell as prince has stated in a interview he did a while back. I kind of doubt the purple banana is a male organ. Not everyone would go looking for that.

i agree with some of the other people posting that say this song is about prince's christian outlook on life but I think it's about erotic as well as religious ecstasy. I take the lyrics to mean that the psychiatrist is trying to force people to conform and think that life shouldn't be hard when in fact the real you-the spiritual you- would seem crazy in everyday life and overly sexual and there's nothing wrong with that.

In a conversation he had with L.A. Reid, he indicated that the elevator referenced in this song referred to the devil. I am really torn about his whole death being a fan since the 1980's. I keep envisioning his small frame slumped over in an elevator and no one around him. He died so alone in that empty mansion. Heartbreaking man!
