I Miss You Lyrics

Artist: Randy Newman
Album: Bad Love

Still in my heart after all these years
separated by time now by distance
I couldn't allow myself to feel the loss that I feel right now

you're far away and happy I know
it's a little bit late... twenty years or so
it's a little bit cold for all those concerned
but I'd sell my soul and your soul for a song
so I'll pour my heart out

I miss you
I miss you, I'm sorry but I do

I want to thank you for the good years
and apologize for the rough ones
you must be laughing yourself sick
but I wanted to write you one before I quit
and this one's it

I miss you, I wanted you to know
I miss you, and I still love you so.

Heard him do this one in Eugene, OR, Saturday. He introduced it by saying that there was a line that a song writer had to watch, between expressing himself and being offensive. Sometimes you just have to hop over that line. He said he wrote this one, for his first wife, about the time he married his second one. I nearly cried, sitting with my second wife, thinking of my first.

Just to correct the above comment, but trying to avoid diminishing the beautiful sentiment behind it, Newman introduces this song always using the same comedic line. He actually says that he wrote this song for his first wife while being married to his third, something that is fact, but stated in a very tongue-in-cheek manner.

You missed a line. After "You must be laughing yourself sick", there is another line "Up there in Idaho".

Isn't the satirical crux of the song:

"I'd sell my soul and your soul for a song"?

"I Miss You," as beautiful-sounding as it is, is a commentary on heartbroken lovesongs, not an actual heartbroken lovesong.

John, you are missing something.

The Rue Confession wrapped in satire that Randy does so well.

It is both a satire and a love song. They are not mutually exclusive.

A beatiful song by an incredible artist.

Also his first marriage collapsed under the weight of his career as a songwriter (supposedly drugs, touring affairs, etc). I think the line is caustic but it has a confessional tinge to it, because of that.

He sang this in Glasgow tonight - such emotion for me as I had just broken up with a special perosn called Mary - doesn't matter the IQ 'history' its the present EQ that counts

Being still in love with my husband whom I divorced 12 yrs. ago, "Miss You" resonates for me on many levels. It is unquestionably beautiful and, I believe, written from the heart, ... not the satiric commentary that Randy Newman is so good at and so well known for. Makes my cry every time. Powerful.

Regarding the "I'd sell my soul and your soul for a song" line. I don't think it makes this satire. Take the whole section together:

It's a little bit cold for all those concerned
But I'd sell my soul and your soul for a song
So I'll pour my heart out

Perhaps he's just saying "Well, I really shouldn't be saying what I'm about to say because it will make of all those concerned uncomfortable and exposed, but I'd do anything just to have written a song. If I have to bare my naked feelings to do that, so be it; here's the way I feel in my heart."

I could be wrong though, just what I got from it. Anyway, great great tune.

Just a heads up, missing a couple other lines besides the Idaho one. End of the first verse, "As I put this song down" and the second half of the first chorus "I miss you, I'm sorry but it's true".
