Old Man Lyrics
Artist: Randy Newman
Album: Sail Away
Everyone has gone away
Can you hear me? Can you hear me?
No one cared enough to stay
Can you hear me? Can you hear me?
You must remember the old man
I know that you can if you try
So just open up your eyes old man
Look who's come to say goodbye
The sun has left the sky old man
The birds have flown away
And no one came to cry old man
Goodbye old man goodbye
You want to stay I know you do
But it ain't no use to try
'Cause I'll be here-and I'm just like you
Goodbye, old man, goodbye
Won't be no God to comfort you
You taught me not to believe that lie
You don't need anybody
Nobody needs you
Don't cry, old man, don't cry
Everybody dies

Comments/Interpretations
I think there's an error in line 5. Shouldn't it be, "You must remember me old man?"
I think it's either "You must remember me old man" or "You must remember me, oh me"
Correct; Line 5 should read:
"You must remember me old man"
It's very clear on the recording and logically correct.
"You must remember me old man" line 5
Yes, it is 'me' not 'the'.
Breaks my heart this - reminds me of the last time I saw my dad.
Randy Newman is a Genius!
what movei does this song come from?
It's not from a movie, it's from his album "Sail Away"
You must remember ME old man
In this song he songs about his dad. The line "Won't be no God to comfort you. You taught me not to believe that lie" shows that. Newmans dad was a striktly atheist and hated religion. He taught Randy atheism, even though I don't believe that something lasted in Newmans mind. Newman sang also some very religious songs whose showed us that he is at least some religion. For example: "God's song", "He gives us all his love", his album "Faust", "Kathleen (Catholicism Made Easier)".
Steve, did you listen to God's song? And as for "He gives us all his love" He has said LIVE that "I don't believe a word of this song."
The religious songs from Neweman are mostly ironic, i think
