The Last Supper Lyrics

Artist: Jesus Christ Superstar
Album: Jesus Christ Superstar Soundtrack

Apostles
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
Don't disturb me now I can see the answers
Till this evening is this morning life is fine

Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll still talk about us when we've died

Jesus
The end . . .
Is just a little harder when brought about by friends
For all you care this wine could be my blood
For all you care this bread could be my body
The end!
This is my blood you drink
This is my body you eat
If you would remember me when you eat and drink . . .
I must be mad thinking I'll be remembered - yes
I must be out of my head!
Look at your blank faces! My name will mean nothing
Ten minutes after I'm dead!
One of you denies me
One of you betrays me

Apostles
Not I! Who would? Impossible!

Jesus
Peter will deny me in just a few hours
Three times will deny me - and that's not all I see
One of you here dining, one of my twelve chosen
Will leave to betray me -

Judas
Cut out the dramatics! You know very well who -
Jesus
Why don't you go do it?
Judas
You want me to do it!
Jesus
Hurry they are waiting
Judas
If you knew why I do it . . .
Jesus
I don't care why you do it!
Judas
To think I admired you
For now I despise you
Jesus
You liar - you Judas
Judas
You wanted me to do it!
What if I just stayed here
And ruined your ambition?
Christ you deserve it!

Jesus
Hurry you fool, hurry and go,
Save me your speeches
I don't want to know - Go! Go!

Apostles
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
What's that in the bread it's gone to my head
Till this morning is this evening life is fine

Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll all talk about us when we've died

Judas
You sad pathetic man - see where you've brought us to
Our ideals die around us and all because of you
But the saddest cut of all -
Someone has to turn you in
Like a common criminal, like a wounded animal
A jaded mandarin
A jaded mandarin
Like a jaded, faded, faded, jaded, jaded mandarin

Jesus
Get out! They're waiting! Get out! They're waiting!
Oh! They're waiting for you!

Judas
Everytime I look at you I don't understand
Why you let the things you did get so out of hand
You'd have managed better if you'd had it planned -
Ah --- ah

Apostles
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
What's that in the bread it's gone to my head
Till this evening is this morning life is fine

Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried If I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll still talk about us when we've died

Jesus
Will no-one stay awake with me?
Peter? John? James?
Will none of you wait with me?
Peter? John? James?

Good music - I just wish they had stayed closer to the real biblical account. Jesus clearly declared that he was creating a New Covenant between God and man -not simply wondering aloud if he would be remembered after his death, and feeling sorry for himself!

I'm not really familiar with the bible, but i do love this play, and I do love this song/scene. While it may not be a strict following of scripture, it's a great way of depicting a personal conflict with god.
by nick (artt160) on 9/5/2008 12:33pm
i believe the point of this play/movie is not to be biblicly accurate, but to bring jesus into mass media and bring him to people that would normally be missed

I listened to this musical/opera so many times as a child that now, at 38, I can still sing each verse, from each character, by memory.

I have studied the Biblical research on the historical Jesus for the past 10 years or so. I too heard Superstar in the 60s and now that I am 72 I have revisited it. I find it amazingly close to what I have learned.
Jesus had not intention of "creating a New Covenant." It was simply a response to the Roman occupation trying to show people what the world could be like if God were King and Cesar was not.

For me, Superstar brings to the forefront that Jesus was a man and, although he was sent to the world by God, still had similar struggles as "everyday" people. Imagine those struggles in today's world...

KF, the same here!!! I listened to this musical/opera so many times as a child that now, at 38, I can still sing each verse, from each character, by memory.

What the hell is a jaded mandarin?

my mom introduced this musical to me just a few days ago and i love it, i already know all of the words to it, its great and it was put together very nicely =]

I'm only 19, but at my school JCS (1973 version) is still popular. We love the music and the message. Judas isn't just a traitor but a man who tries to do the best for everyone. Even Kaiafas and the scribes aren't bad people, they just try to keep the order. There are no bad persons (this part of) the story of Jesus.

I agree with KF and Th, my parents introduced this musical to me as a very young child, and now as a 20-year old I can recite every lyric from memory! A great rock opera indeed!

Fantastic play live! I saw it about 15 years ago -- with the original actors who played Jesus & Judas! I would see it over and over again. I look forward to taking my oldest son (9 years old) to see the play.

FWIW - Jesus did not want to die. He did not want to suffer. He was man. As mentioned above, this scene simply should his human side.

My mom and aunts had all of us kids when we were little watching Superstar and all of us are now in our 20's and 30's and now we are passing it on to our kids and a whole new generation that loves it!! We as a family can pretty much re-enact the entire movie. We all LOVE it and it will be a part of our family for many more generations.

I saw the movie in my early years, then a few years ago was lucky enough to see the live play at the Hard Rock Hotel here in Vegas and starring in the show as Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson. Ted was wearing the very same clothes and shawl he wore in the movie and his performance was virtually flawless. The production quality was amazing, his voice hit every note accurately, I left glad I had gone to the show. As far as accurate, no theological scholar suggests the Bible is an accurate accounting of events, it is a recollection, translated in half a dozen languages and like all translations, something always gets lost.

same a kf and th but a little different. my mom introduced me to the show a couple of weeks ago and i have printed off all the words and know them all by heart! im different coz im only 11 but im sure ill be like them to.

As an atheist, I must say this piece of story-telling is fantastic. Carl Anderson is an unparalleled personification of Judas.

The part where Judas runs into the herd of sheep makes me lose it with tears every time

A jaded mandarin means a worn out government offical. (Mandarin was a high chinesse government post)

Was having a bit of a melt down yesterday, till while scrolling through the TV channels found 'JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR behind the scenes' on TAC. (Toronto, Ontario area reception). Love that Rock Opera. Saved my soul and my sanity again!

Judas was just used. No crucifixion could take place without him. He was a part of decree, and Christ had to wish Judas to betray him. Judas has just done his duty.
by beth sd on 4/24/2011 7:41pm
Judas played his part...but he so based on his own part, as free as Jesus did. Jesus died as a sacrafice, Judas took his own life and died a sinner. God's will certainly was not served by Judas any more than by Caiafas, Herod, or Pilot. They were what was wrong, and why the Jews (mostly) Him in there time.
by Paul on 8/7/2011 9:23pm
I wish "Beth sd" could write a complete sentence. I have no idea what she is talking about, though it sounds like mostly doubeltalk and wishful thinking.. The historical Jesus had Jewish parents. The Jewish idea of a Messiah is completely different from the later Christian one. To the Jews, the idea that a man could be god is the sheerest blasphemy. The Jews did not and do not think that the Messiah would be a god.

This was an amazing musical with a fantastic music score. Carl Anderson did an outstanding job playing Judas as did Ted Neeley with the portrayal of Jesus Christ. I get chills every time I listen to the soundtrack and it brings tears to my eyes of Judas' decision of betrayal and the anger he felt.
by Tiff on 10/27/2011 9:03pm
An older friend introduced me to this musical about three weeks ago and I LOVE it. I agree with whoever that was who pointed out the lack of historical accuracy in the Bible...people should keep in mind that this is entertainment, too. Fantastic entertainment, touching, inspiring stuff.

KF and Th, I'm with you! I am also 38 and have been listening to this music since I was about 13. Love, love, love it! I also had a great opportunity to perform in a stage production of Superstar a few yests ago. It was the most fun I have ever had!

Having played Jesus in this show I can tell all of you who think this is supposed to bring Christianity into the media... You're wrong. JCS is from Judas' perspective. The whole point is that Jesus is just a man. Not the son of god. It's not meant to be an accurate account of the bible, largely because Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice are atheists who saw the story of Jesus' death as an interesting story of love and betrayal.
I do so wish theists would stop trying to apply deeper meaning to it.

i so love this rock opera musical, it is amazing, it makes me cry when i watch it for sure, i love the 2000 version, it is more modern and i think Jerome Pradon was amazing as Judas, and Glenn Carter was amazing, fact is i reckon they both played their parts well, the whole cast did...
by peggy knecht on 9/19/2015 5:04pm
I was in this amazing rock opera. The whole point of the show is that you are seeing it through Judas, not Jesus. We staged it as such. My friend Don ( Judas) was only off the stage for king Herod scene. Otherwise, he was always looking at what was going on, off to the side, unless he was singing.
by Val on 3/28/2017 4:26pm
I like the human approach the play takes on the well know stories of the Bible's. We are taught he is the son of God, but he was also a man. And that's what all of these songs portray. You think of his apostles, and you think these spiritual people who shared the word of Christ but what these songs connect you with is what they could have been like as people you knew simply following someone t
by AH on 9/11/2017 12:41pm
My mum introduced me to this about a year ago and I love the way Judas is portrayed as a man who believes he's doing the right thing and then realises he's killed Jesus.
by AM on 3/1/2019 3:02am
I think the musical does not reflect everything from the Bible. Namely that Jesus died for our sins. In addition, the true story does not end with his death, because he rises after 3 days from the dead.
Overall, it is a very nice musical with excellent music
