I Don't Know How To Love Him Lyrics

Artist: Jesus Christ Superstar
Album: Jesus Christ Superstar Soundtrack

Mary Magdalene
I don't know how to love him
What to do, how to move him
I've been changed, yes really changed
In these past few days
When I've seen myself
I seem like someone else

I don't know how to take this
I don't see why he moves me
He's a man
He's just a man
And I've had so many
Men before
In very many ways
He's just one more

Should I bring him down
Should I scream and shout
Should I speak of love
Let my feelings out?
I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?

Don't you think it's rather funny
I should be in this position?
I'm the one
Who's always been
So calm so cool
No lover's fool
Running every show
He scares me so

I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?

Yet
If he said he loved me
I'd be lost
I'd be frightened
I couldn't cope
Just couldn't cope
I'd turn my head
I'd back away
I wouldn't want to know
He scares me so
I want him so
I love him so

One cannot make comments if hearing the song is not feasible. I wanted to hear this song, I Don't Know How to Love Him, but you're telling me I have listen to some other version or whatever. No thanks.

Hmm, it seems to me that this page is only for the lyrics. Maybe you need to pay attention to what is in front of you...

This is only a lyrical page hence "I Don't Know How to Love Him LYRICS" at the top of the page. I don't really see what the problem is ladies.

Awesome song!! Love it! Great love ballad.
by Nan on 9/2/2008 11:10am
Yes, it is a love song. but on a deeper plane...it could be interpreted as a woman in love with a man, or it could be interpreted as one's love for Christ our Saviour. Both felt deeply, wholly, passionately, and both can be frightening, confusing and exciting.

by David Marshall on 9/27/2008 9:18pm
This is among the greatest love songs ever written regardless of the level on which you choose to embrace it.

It successfully brings out Mary's love for Christ as a man AND as her Lord.

What a passionate song. We sing it all the time on piano night. It just gives you a good feeling inside.

i feel that this song has alot of meaning to it and i love listening to it because being in high school, i have found a man whom i love dearly, and i have a hard time understanding why i feel it's him to which i feel i belong to. After all he's just a man. This song just really makes me think alot about choosing the right one.

This is ultimately the most beautiful lovesong that I have ever heard! Yvonne, from the original motion picture of Jesus Christ Superstar, is the only one who could ever bring forth, so magnificiently, the eternal love that Mary Magdalene so deeply felt for Jesus of Nazareth. The emotion experienced in this song, is truly divine!

I absolutely love this song and the movie... If I had a chance to be a part of a production of it I would...

This song is especially powerful within the context of the lyrics when Judas weeps it out before he kills himself.
I can't watch the movie...it destroys the deeper meaning in the "thetre of the mind". Plus I much prefer Ian Gillan as Christ and Murray Head as Judas.

I Love"JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR"

What a true song that any christian can relate to. Exspecially for those who have been so lost in the past and just found God; and they now realize what a comfert and wonderful relief God is to all. I think its really about this girl whose loving a man in a different and not sexual or attractive way.

This song is beyond a song, beyond beauty. It is about discovering Jesus' love within yourself. It is scary, because is it so different from the love of a man and woman. It is about converting, following Jesus. When it happens to you, you will be scared, because you will think about things you have done in your life that have offended our God, and you will feel the need to change them, but you will also feel lost, meaning that you have realized that you cannot do those things and love Jesus. You will want to turn away, because darkness is easier than light; the way we lived before Christ touched our hearts is easier, because that is how many choose to live. It is about changing FOR Him. It is hard, scary, confusing, and exciting all at the same time.

I appriciate your comments greatly. Yes it could be either was as love from a women to a man, or love to God.

it's a beautiful song that stays with u even after hearing it once..i guess i'm fortunate enough to have been able to sing it as part of the musical JCS during my school days..what an experience!
by sarah on 2/4/2010 3:20pm
how beautiful. i've always adored mary magdelene's character. I find her the most interesting in the whole play. all the characters are so developed, but magdelene is so striking, and it's refreshing to see a female character given such an appropriate amount of depth.
by sarah on 2/4/2010 4:01pm
also, to the other Sarah, clearly you understand how to use the internet. this isnt the only website around. if you've ever heard of google, im sure you could pound your fists a few times on the keyboard and google would just say "did you mean 'i don't know how to love him?" then you just pick whatever version you please. it's that easy!
you see, the beautiful thing about the internet is that you no longer have any excuse for not being able to look something up. god forbid you had to use a card catalog.
by Mel on 5/17/2010 2:58pm
This is my favorite song from any musical of any era. The dramatic conflict and passion and truth that can be applied to so many parts of life are just amazing.
by sheela on 3/7/2011 2:25am
I was in love when i first heard it. It seemed to portray the turmoil within me. So many years later i still feel the agony and the ecstacy. It will stay with me in this lifetime
by Sandi on 3/9/2011 8:12am
I sang this song in high school. To feel the emotions of youth and young love and know that true love can only be had through my dear Savior our Lord Jesus. This was so filled with passion and promise that I still hear it so strong in me when I think of Jesus while singing it.

Mary Mag. is one of the most fascinating fixtures of noncannonical speculation. Groupie? Lover or wife? Just one of the female disciples? Or someone held by demons until freed and then a devoted follower?

You can hear, and relate so much to this struggle between Jesus the man and Him as God the salvation.
by Chanda on 7/18/2011 8:36am
I just keep hearing the song inside my head and heart every second...

There are some terrific, insightful comments here. Realizing that this song has a deeper meaning than a woman's love for a man is like "seeing the light" about God and Jesus; it is a frightening transition in one's life for sure, coming into "the light."
by Jessica on 10/21/2011 10:55am
To sarah, obviously theres other sites to find music. its not that difficult.
by Rob-Ireland on 1/18/2012 10:45pm
This song without "Mary Magdalene" as the opening line, could also refer to a gay man talking about another man or God also.

Just sayin y'all x
