Lalena Lyrics

Artist: Donovan

LALENA
Donovan

When the sun goes to bed
That's the time you raise your head,
That's your lot in life, Lalea
Can't blame ya, Lalea.
Arty tart, ladeda,
Can your part get much sadder ?
That's your lot in life, Lalea.
Can't blame ya, Lalea.
Run your hand through your hair,
Paint your face with despair.
That's your lot in life, Lalea
Can't blame ya, Lalea.
When the sun goes to bed
That's the time you raise your head.
That's your lot in life, Lalea
I can't blame ya, Lalea.
Arty tart, oh so ladeda,
Can your part ever get, ever get much sadder ?
That's your lot in life, Lalea.
I can't blame ya, Lalea, no, no, no, Lalea,
Oh, Lalea.

I was named after this song. I have always wondered if it was about a prostitute????I saw Donovan perform the song live and he said simply "the song is about a sad lady he once met".

My middle name in Lalena, also named after this song. It's a beautiful song, yet so sad too. I love it though. I love Donovan!

An amazing song, done with feeling. This song shows the real talent of the songwriters among us. They can look through the eyes and feel the inner feelings of others, even the deep hurts that we try to hide. And they can express those feelings so the rest of us can "get a glimpse" of other's worlds. They are on a special pedestal in my esteem!

Also named afer this song but my parents forgot how to spell it at the hospital. It sounds so sad and I had to listen to it all the time growing up.
by Windy Lelana on 7/26/2009 4:57pm

I too was named after this song! As you can see, mine is spelled different also :) I thought I was the only "Lalainia" out there! Hello to you all! Do any of you actually go by this name? Sadly, I never have. My middle name is Michelle and so I've been stuck with Sheli (spelled different too) for...ahem...38 years!
by LaLainia on 5/31/2010 3:34pm

by Lalena on 6/7/2010 7:17am
I too was named after this song..I had asked my dad why he named me after a song about a prostitute. He said I like the name..Don't pay attention to the meaning lol
by Lanya on 6/25/2010 7:04pm
I too was named after this song! I am in my thirties and just heard it for the first time! I thought it was quite depressing and yet funny that my parents chose this for me.
by Daniella on 8/17/2010 10:11am
I love this song, listened to it when I was about 13, unfortunaly my parents didn't call me Laleńa, would have like it!
by Lalania on 10/6/2010 10:54pm

The book 'Little Miss Strange' by Joanna Rose has a character called Lalena (after the song) in it. It's an excellent book.
by La Lena on 4/25/2011 2:41pm
I was also named La Lena and also thought I was the only one out there however my name is prnounced a little diffrent and spelt with a tilde over the N

I wasn't named after this song. I'm a bloke. Sooooo disppointed! For years been thinking, how cool! a song about a vampire. Lovely song. Used it to learn how to play barr chords.
by LaLania on 12/10/2011 7:24am
Yup, named after the song as well. I hate this song, its terribly embarrassing. I love the name though, but couldnt it have been a cool song and not so depressing? I always blame it on my hippie parents. Nice to know that there are other Lalena's out there.
by LaLanya on 12/11/2011 9:46pm
Sometimes I wonder if my father cursed me by naming me after this song. Not that I'm a lady of the night mind you but dang my life is pretty deeply sad at times. Hoping that there is no curse on the name that keeps me from love.
by Diane on 12/30/2011 6:01am
My neice is 38 and named after this song also, only her parents spelled it Lalanya instead of the way Donavan spelled it. Always loved the name.
by Lalena on 1/8/2012 10:28am
Yes named after the song 41 years ago. Way too many hippie parents. Went by Lalena for years but people kept screwing up the pronunciation. Go by Laney now, it is easier for non hippies to pronounce lol.
by Lalaneya on 1/20/2012 7:33pm
I was named after this song too!! Love my name and I would feel INSANELY weird if I meet another with the same name. (Has not happened yet) but I get compliments on it all the time. My parents spelled it this way because they thought it would be easier to read and say. It did not work...;)
by Lalenia on 5/23/2012 5:49pm
Wow so many spellings. I too was named after the song. I've yet to meet anyone with are name. Always been called Lana for short. Everyone screws lalenia up. It's so bothersome, to mess up a beautiful name.
by Lelannia F on 6/6/2012 12:34pm
I am also named after this song...I guess my mother's spelling was off...what a sad song have never heard but if it is about a prostitute, just hope my motehr didn't realize that when naming me jeezz! I have never met anyone else named the same and hardly anyone can even pronounce it...lol Everyone calls me Lily for short.
by Mob195 on 8/1/2012 3:04pm
I named my daughter born in '77' after this song but I spelled it my way.. LaLeania. I figured she would be an A student, lol. But all in all she was a beautiful baby & the name just fit her. I'm sure she may not understand why I did it but I always said if I had a girl I wanted her to be named LaLeania. Beauty for beauty, if you understand what I mean.
by Leleinia Moore on 1/26/2013 4:57pm
My name too, born in 83 my parents are in their 60s...name gets butchered all the time. Live close to the border so I explain to people that speak Spanish how do you say firewood, well it's similar to that. And I tell people of a certain age genre I was named after this song. It was great reading other posts this morning because I could relate to the hippie parents, the sad melody, the greatness to the song, my name not spelled like the song, the mystery behind it and so much more. When I was blessed my god with my daughter I had to think long and hard for a name since I consider mine so unique. Leleinia

I have a friend whose middle name is Lalena. She is sweet and has also had to deal with a tough lot in her life. I love her dearly.
by Timebug on 8/30/2013 2:02am
The song was written about Lotte Lenya a dancer, singer and actress. She played the evil Rosa Klebb in the second Bond film 'From Russia With Love'.
by Aaron on 1/12/2014 8:23am
it is about a vampire
by Lelanea on 2/23/2014 12:06pm
Yup, another one here. Here I was thinking I was the only one up till a couple years ago. I've managed to hold a domaine at www.lelanea.coma and also my gmail is simply my name. Had no clue there were any others until when i met two others in NYC named after the same song. I do prefer deep purple's version more. Cheers to all the Lelanea's out there.
by laleinia on 8/20/2014 8:39pm
I was born in 71 to hippies. I always hated the first day of school when teachers had to pronounce my name. Now I embrace it! Ive met two or three others, but all had different spellings. Did name my kids more common names, though. Didnt know deep purple did a rendition of the song, have to check it out
by Candi on 8/23/2014 8:08pm
Thought it was about a part played by the actress Lotte Lanya, who was a stage actress and played a prostitute in the play The Three Penny Opera. (this was back in the '30's I think) Anyway...I actually think I heard Donovan sing this song live, and insert the name "Lotte Lanya" for Lalenya but I could be wrong. I know That Lotte Lanya was Jewish and escaped Nazi Europe in 1941 with her composer husband (whose name escapes me at the moment) He became very prominent as a Broadway composer though...trivia...

I'm a New York Lalena. Hello to all the Lalenas out there! I've never met another either. I've grown to like my name, but being a little kid with an unusual name was a bit hard in the 70s. My parents were very young when they had me and my dad liked the name and the song. I get complements all the time on my name now! Although I've had struggles and tough times in my life, I will not let it be my "lot." That's where the similarities end! Thank you God!
by lalanea on 12/20/2015 8:18pm
Hello I'm a lalanea in Michigan. My mom loved the song, but not the spelling. She thought it was spelled wrong. Nice to know she's not the only one to change the spelling. My nickname is Lanie. I use both. Nobody ever says it right. I've never met another Lalanea. But hear my nickname on two TV shows. I called my mom, to let her know, that's others named their kids after Donovan's song. She's tickled pink. People love my name. I love it too, but the song is about a hooker, sad but pretty.
by Kathleen on 1/29/2018 1:47am
Could also be about a person with Migraines. It’s how my life goes.
by Lucia on 3/4/2018 10:26am
The song is a beautiful downer, but sometimes you need the Blues. It reminds me of that movie with Naomi Watts about the Russian gangsters in London and their imprisoned prostitutes, but in the 1970s it was always about a sad “lady of the night.” Funny what parents inflict on their children. My niece, Roxanne is another victim.
Btw, in the Southwest, the name would, obviously, require a tilda: Lalaña, but the a sounds would be softer.
by Lalainya L. Hayward on 6/25/2018 7:05pm
I, too, was named after the song and my parents tried to spell it phoenetically (which still did not help), I go by Lanie or Lain mostly but love that I have a different name; it is always a conversation starter.
