I think it's about a love that transcends time.
I believe that it is spoken from the vantage point of one who once experienced a love so great, which, with certain circumstances unexplained, has been ended. This person is reflecting back on their life, ask not why this person is there, because it's deeper than a need to remember what once was. There is no regret in the choices that this person made, nor does this person believe that their other regrets. With all these moments lost, and no way to tell the other, this person wishes for wings like they once had, to be able to soar as they once did. This person is moving on, whether physically or mentally, this person has just shared with us their innermost emotions of the last remembrance of a love that shone so bright, before facing what comes after that love.

I remember listening to this song as a kid and thinking "wow this is some deep stuff"...and now it just so happens that today is the 6 month mark between the split between my ex girlfriend and me. we were together 2.5 years and this song really has really hit a chord with me.
I agree with AndrewBC. When this song was new I had just broke up with my first real girfriend. Nowadays I am married and happy but I still think of my first when I hear this song. "The first cut is the deepest, eh?"
The song is what you take from it. For me, it's about my last relationship with the guy who introduced me to the band and this song itself. We aren't together and most likely never will be again, but I never lost the feelings for him that are invoked by this song. *shrugs* Again, it's what you take from it.

As being an (non-professional) electronic dance producer I really admire VNV Nation for their productions (and songs in itself ofcourse). "Beloved" I find a real masterpiece production-wise. The arpeggio's keep stacking & stacking, yet the sound remains so clean and bright... The best is that Vii portamento string in the end. They really did something very special here, especially looking at the time this was produced. Big, sincere respect.

Well, for me, this song is the story of a couple of majestic creatures that were once blessed with the ability to fly, but one the two has fallen from grace and now he mourns.
It's about losing someone, not as in a break up. The death of a loved one. I believe you actually have to experience such a thing to be able to fully understand this song, the pain that lies behind it. The song is amazing, the lyrics are too.

Pretty simple. Most people believe in a heaven, and a hell. They believe heaven is up there, among the clouds. We look up at the clouds and think of our lost ones.
I love this song, and I love VNV Nation. I think that's all I would have to say.
