THE WILD ONE, FOREVER Lyrics

Artist: Tom Petty
Album: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Well the moon sank as the wind blew
The street lights slowly died
They call you the wild one, said stay 'way from her
Said she could love no one if she tried

But then somethin' I saw
In your eyes told me right away
That you were gonna have to be mine
When the strangest feeling came over me
Down inside no matter what it takes
I'll never get over how good it felt
When you finally held m e
I'll never regret
Baby those few hours
Will grow in my head
Forever

Well it's too bad, but I want you
To know I understand
Yeah, it's been a long time but I don't mind
Yeah, it's all right I understand

Beca use somethin' I saw
In your eyes told me right away
That you were gonna have to be mine
When the strangest feeling came over me
Down inside I knew right away
I'll never get over how good it felt
When you finally kissed me
I'll never regret
Baby those few hours
Will grow in my head
Forever

Great song. Though I don't understand how the first two lines fit in with any of the rest of it. I'm curious how Tom would justify that.

I think the first two lines are him reflecting late that night, or even at dawn about how she did what everyone said she would, and what he knew she would do. She's the wild one he had to try for, and will never forget.

we all probably had that one girl who took our breath away
who we couldn't keep
but will never forget

I did and 35 years later can remember how she felt and the softness of her lips

he captures it in the song like he was there

Absolutely beautifully written. When I first heard the song, I liked it but didn't quite understand what he was saying. It took some time to get used to when I bought his first album about 2 months ago. I'm so used to songs like "Here Comes my Girl" and "Even the Losers" and "Refugee" that it really interested me how dramatically their [the Heartbreakers] sound changed over the years. I see their first album more of a bluesy sound, but then yet again they were just trying to figure out who they were.

These are one of those timeless songs that the lyrics will ring in my ears years after the last time I listened to it. Tom Petty's just got that way of words, much like Mark Knopfler or David Bowie would. Love it!! :D

The first two lines of the song describe "those few hours" that will "grow in his head. Forever."

I used to cover this song in my band,(in Canada), back 78/79! One Petty's best ballads...forever.

Heard one of the last lines in the grocery store on their house music and was instantly transported back in time. Googled it with just part of ONE LYRIC. God bless Google and you tube. Sang along at the top of my voice in the car. TP was/is such a dude with gut wrenching heart felt lyrics. This song is just one of many.
