Mary Janes Last Dance Lyrics

Artist: Tom Petty

She grew up in an Indiana town,
Had a good-lookin' mama who never was around.
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on them Indiana nights.

Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen.
She blew the boys away, was more than they'd seen.
I was introduced and we both started groovin'.
I said, "I dig you baby, but I got to keep movin' on.
Keep movin' on."

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again.

Well, I don't know, but I've been told,
You never slow down, you never grow old.
I'm tired of screwin' up, tired of going down,
Tired of myself, tired of this town.

Oh, my, my. Oh, hell, yes.
Honey, put on that party dress.
Buy me a drink, sing me a song.
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long.

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again.

There's pigeons down on Market Square.
She's standin' in her underwear,
Lookin' down from a hotel room.
Nightfall will be comin' soon.

Oh, my, my. Oh, hell, yes.
You got to put on that party dress.
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone.
I hit my last number and walked to the road.

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again.

drue ur an idiot..the name of the song is MARY JANE...duhzz..
he plays it off as it was a girl....
but he's talkin about weed
by wow on 8/14/2008 2:39pm
yes because weed has a "good lookin mama". and weed wears underwear. BECAUSE DRUGS TOTALLY WEAR CLOTHES AND GET HOTEL ROOMS.
dumbfucks. i like it because its talks about indiana (:
by mcfly on 8/24/2008 8:55am
dudes sounds like the song is almost more about a drifter like keepin one step ahead of the reaper man, like time is short. dude in the song is always on the move right. and this chick is like a landmark maybe like a spot to tell the story from two sides.

i think it's about a girl who has been through a troubled childhood & she smokes weed. mary jane is referring to both the girl and marijuana.
that's just my interpretation. makes sense to me.

+ love this song.
by J on 8/29/2008 10:09pm
wow you guys have no concept for metaphor and analogies... the song is most obviously about weed... jus topen your mind and look at it from that angle "she grew up tall and she grew up right"

"last dance with mary jane, one more time to kill the pain"

this is as much about drugs as hotel califronia
by elijah on 9/10/2008 2:22pm
oh, my, my. oh hell, yes!!!!!!!!!!

Drugs, drugs and drugs...

yeah, "J" is absolutely right when he says it is clearly about weed. Maybe you have to be a pothead to catch all the inuendos. Did I spell that right? Nice choice of letter usage for your code name as well. It fits.
by hanky on 10/8/2008 12:42am
i agree with the moron that put a period for a name, it's deffinately about both, i like the song cus the girl means the world to him and he means nothing to her
by Marissa on 10/9/2008 5:08pm
Well, Tom Petty has been known to write songs about drugs. Just because the song says something about underwear and hotels doesn't mean a thing. You just have to figure it out for yourself. Songs are about interpretation. Many lyricists don't just write what they are saying. They expect you to figure it out.
