If You Were Here Lyrics

Artist: Thompson Twins
Album: Quick Step & Side Kick

(chorus)
if you were here
i could deceive you
and if you were here
you would believe
but would you suspect
my emotion wandering, yeah
do not want a part of this anymore
The rain water drips
through a crack in the ceiling
and i'll have to spend
my time on repair
But just like the rain
i'll be always falling, yeah
only to rise and fall again
(REPEAT CHORUS)

nice romantic song
by Kevin on 10/9/2008 11:40am
Beautiful song... almost haunting. I think the writer is complaining about his/her cycle of easily falling in and out of love. The writer wants happiness... but cannot find it.

I can close my eyes and watch the end of the movie, Sixteen Candles, when 'the girl' gets into the Porsche with 'the guy' and they drive off to his house. There, this song plays in the background as they sit on his parents' glass dining room table, sharing a kiss over her belated birthday cake. This scene is worth suffering through the whole movie just to appreciate the happy ending...

In case you didnt realize it and after 25 or so years, 99% of people who saw the film "Sixteen Candles" who asked who did that song at the end -- well people this is THAT song. HAPPY B-DAY SAM!
by Ivone on 11/21/2008 3:19pm
Matter Joanes you are right! I always wondered who did that awesome song at the end of "Sixteen Candles". I am glad I know :) Really, it is a great song.

Yeah rad song. I miss the 80's. Great decade. Great movies by John Hughes.
by Rendon76 on 9/19/2009 3:33pm
As I was listening to this I could see it as the song in my wedding (if I ever get married)I can picture a whole scene with her, me, then kids and balloons falling then everyone coming onto the dance floor... oh wait.. yeah this song does things like that to you. Dreamy song and RIP John Hughes, brilliant man will be missed.
by rosenbill on 10/7/2009 9:58pm
Such a beautiful song (but sad love songs usually are). Jake is just beyond cool, i wish time could stand still at the very end (of the movie).
by asher on 10/21/2009 10:16pm
this song is not about happy... read the lyrics. Although great ending to movie.

I absolutely love sixteen candles. It's my favorite movie. I watched it yesterday; i want my sixteen birthday to be just like it WHICH IS FRIDAY : ). except for forgetting my birthday lol. Mainly the scene at the end of the movie
by Rangster on 4/30/2010 6:00am
I love 16 Candles. Very Funny. Great cast. The Cusack's were dorks lol. Was surprised the Thompson Twins were responsible for this hauntingly romantic piece.
by Mary on 6/22/2010 8:11pm
Just heard this in a restaurant and was transported back in time to the 80s...could not remember the name of song or artist, but I knew it was from a John Hughes movie...finally found it after much web searching and I'm very satisfied! What a great song, so evocative of the era.
by John on 7/21/2010 11:53pm
Just watched sixteen candles last weekend. I love Shazamm on my iphone. Great song. Very sad one too.
by Nurtchle on 9/12/2010 5:09pm
What a diabolically beautiful and bittersweet song! I'll always admire its perfect placement in Sixteen Candles- She's gotten her wish, at least for now, and this song is a dreamy harbinger of the heartbreak she may have to suffer should he change his mind on a whim.
by Katt on 11/28/2010 5:42pm
So true...a harbinger, a reminder that the popular guy could easily change his mind, and it's a pretty little wish that might go wrong someday. Sigh..LOVED that movie, wish it was the 80's just once, all over again....
by JBN on 11/29/2010 3:54pm
I love and live the 80's and I'm proud of my decade. This song is a staple in my collection. I need to hear it at least once a week. I want to go back, no joke.

Too bad Mollie Ringwald looks like hell now.
by Gian on 1/8/2011 9:44pm
I was born in the 90s so I wasn't born yet when this song was released or during the 80s. It's a shame because I really love everything about the 80s - music, fashion, movies, you name it.

This song is amazing, and it really evokes good moods. It is a really precious and special song, like it really touches me :)
by Faruk on 1/23/2011 4:49pm
this has always been one of those songs that reminds me of the feelings of the 80s, the nostalgia and everything that went with it. What a simple yet beautiful song.

I am 50 yrs. old, I was 23 when I saw 16 candles. Today I was in a clothing store and this song came over the sound system and I instantly remembered where I was, who I was with, in what theater I was in and what we were snacking on when we saw the movie. I was hit with a wall of great memories. My eyes began to water uncontrollably. I left my basket in the store, came home, closed the shades and watched the entire movie twice with the stereo cranked way up. The earth was a lot better place to live on back in the 80's. Much better than what we have today.
by Jesik on 4/9/2011 1:28am
Gerald, just had to comment.....its amazing what a song can do isn't it?? Trigger such memories! I miss the 80's. I'm 32 now but they live on! LOVE 16 CANDLES!
by Raul on 5/20/2011 1:27pm
You a song is great when the lyrics are bittersweet and the remains to be romantic...stand the test of time!

What a great time machine this song is. My 24yr old daughter loves Sixteen Candles as much as I do.I see they used this song in the movie Easy A but it was sung by someone else. Great songs are loved by many generations. The 80s were the glory days for sure.
by Sunkimmy22 on 1/20/2012 10:09am
I'm 41. We used this as our wedding song 9 years ago. Just like everyone else has already stated, what a privlege it was to have experienced the 80's. I graduated in 1988. Life was so beautiful then. I listen to this song everyday and watch Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles at least once a month.
by Hope on 2/24/2012 10:25pm
I think it means that he wants to love, but doesnt allow himself to, maybe because he doesnt think he is worthy.... So he falls in love, but hides it and the person he is in love with finally gives up and moves on.
A vicious cycle....
by MovingOn on 3/12/2012 9:02am
Now when I hear this song, I think of my husband (in his 40's) who left me recently. In that context, the song makes perfect sense. He has a harder time deceiving me now that he is not here, his emotions are all over the place (he lives in a fantasy world, sadly), and because he left I assume he does not want the relationship anymore. And in the end, he knows he's destined to repeat this cycle with relationships and feels powerless to change it.

80s forever!

I walked down the aisle to this song. So inspired by Sixteen Candles. Love it
by Tweetybe on 10/26/2012 4:52pm
I love this song. I would have to say my favourite movie is Sixteen Candles. I watched it well before my sixteenth birthday & always dreamed that my Birthday wouldn't start would end like Sam's. This song to me was the epitome of the movie, loved her leaving the church, him waiting, her questioning, her father happy for her.
Love this song
by Drew Peacock on 11/24/2012 5:21pm
I love this song, it is almost haunting and it always bring tears to my eyes

Montgomery triangle is awesome!

WHAT DOES THIS SONG MEAN? I DON’T GET IT
by 80s Lady - Kay Kuncl on 2/23/2013 8:36pm
This is just the Jake Ryan song - I love you Jake - you were the quinessential 80s hearthrob.
by JoeC on 3/3/2013 4:35pm
The song is a cold and calculating assessment by someone in a relationship that they're not feeling it anymore and they want out.

Great song, but doesn't really fit how it was used as the ending song to Sixteen Candles.
by Larry Frazier on 4/13/2013 6:48pm
"suffering though the whole movie" - go eat a goat, troll.
by vic on 5/1/2013 9:51pm
The 80s were incredible. I love songs such as this. I love it when nearly every song from that era takes me back to a specific place when a song was popular! Wow at the awesome memories! Yep terrific memories
by Audrey on 6/7/2013 2:08pm
Wow I thought i was the only geek that felt a connection to this movie/song. Nice to know I'm not alone.
by Pisces girl on 1/17/2014 8:44pm
This song is so haunting. That seen when jake walks Samantha to the car. They sit across from each other and he asks her to make her wish and she says it ha already come true. All the while the song in the background. I had tears in my eyes the whole time, hadn't seen the movie in maybe 30 years and I was back in high school. I used to have a newspaper clipping of Jake Ryan in my locker. My life is sad now, wish I could go back in time.
by sean o on 6/7/2014 3:23am
I feel the way you all do about the song and the 80s.
by crushmom on 8/4/2014 6:32pm
The Thompson Twins rock! I can't wait to see Tom Bailey in the Retro Futura tour!!! I read in an interview he will be doing this song and I can't wait to hear it live.
by bill on 9/6/2014 11:47pm
I am 66 and this has been the most beautifully haunting song of my life.
by Mark on 8/10/2015 12:23pm
I've listened to this song 10 times while I read your comments. This is now a 6 year conversation about, yes, a memorably haunting song. Sad and beautiful like life often is. Will put 16 Candles on my list to watch again. My heart is with those in a sadder place right now.
by Deacon Blues on 8/14/2015 3:02am
A gorgeous song from a wonderful movie made during a fabulous era. Those were the days. And, like many commenters before me, this song instantly takes me back to those days. Fragrance and music are two of theist powerful stimulants for the memory, and this song is a testament to that axiom. I was 24 when this movie came out, and I'm 55 now. But when I hear this song - especially if I'm watching the movie and pairing the song with the final, dreamy, dreamlike, surreal scene - it all comes back. It all comes back...
by Steve on 11/11/2015 8:24am
Cary Brothers did a great remake for Easy A. Worth a listen.
by Raven on 5/18/2018 7:07pm
I was 15 when the movie came out - and a punk rocker with a purple Mohawk. Jake was the ultimate untouchable male, but I got mine in the form of our school's quarter back - just as tall, dark and gorgeous. And on my 16th birthday my gorgeous, romantic boyfriend threw me a party and played this song at the highlight. 30 years later and life doesn't get better than that moment sometimes.....
