Man, It's So Loud In Here Lyrics

Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: Mink Car

They fixed up the corner store like it was a night club
It's permanently disco
Everyone is dressed so oddly I can't recognize them
I can't tell the staff from the customers

Baby check this out, I've got something to say
Man, it's so loud in here
When they stop the drum machine and I can think again
I'll remember what it was

You have to carry all your things
You can't misplace them
There's nowhere to place anything

Baby check this out, I've got someting to say
Man, it's so loud in here
When they stop the drum machine and I can think again
I'll remember what it was

They're all shouting something at us, waving and pointing
They revamped the airport completely now it looks just like a night club
Everyone's excited and confused

Baby check this out, I've got someting to say
Man, it's so loud in here
When they start the love machine and I can love again
I'll remember what it was

Baby check this out, I've got someting to say
Man, it's so loud in here
Man, it's so loud in here
Man, it's so loud in here
Man, it's so loud in here

This is a curious song. To interpret it, you need to have experienced it. It's about what happens to someone after they get rejected. Their heart it beating quickly (the drum machine), he/she has a lot of random thought in his/her head (noise/loudness), everything looks different (revamped/fixed up), and said person is, for a short while at least, incapable of expressing amorous feelings (the love machine).

I think this is a song about life being like a nightclub - loud and disorienting - and the narrator trying to express himself but unable to because of the distractions of modern life. Plus, the image of a corner store or an airport being made over like a disco is just fun. This is an awesome song to play solo with just a guitar - the contrast between the quiet verses and loud choruses is exhilarating.

Personally, I find it interesting that the verses are in a minor key, while the chorus is in a major key. This gives the verses a dark, foreboding tone, even though the lyrics are about something that seems whimsical - places that have been done up like a disco.

I think Zeppyfish is pretty close to the money. Sounds like a rave you know when the security is in flashy reflective clothes so are the ravers. You have to wave and jump to get your friends attention. By the time you do you've forgotten what to say because of the distractions (loud beats) Remember this song came out in early 2000 when every shop and corner store were adding more lights and colours everyone wanted a piece of the rave scene. I won't go into the Love machine thing but it's probably the silence between the chaos. Always a hard one with the Giants, They are the best duo in the world. I saw them live doing this song in 2001 just after 911. Best show ever, Both Johns bring an excitment to the stage I have never seen before or after, ps I am a performer/musician/dancer. Thank you TMBG
