The Freshman Lyrics

Artist: The Verve Pipe

When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of Valium and slept
Now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
hat made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen

by JOe on 10/14/2008 11:47am
Is it about breaking up his freshman yea?. He talks about his friend going through it aswell. or is it about abortion"stopping babys breath". And "compromising" their beliefs, when he says, "For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen".
who knows?

me and a couple friends heard this song and loved it but we realized its about an abortion and how guilty they are about it. and the valium was because she was so depressed and he had to leave cuz it was too much.
yeah it is a really sad song.

Okay so let me give you what I think...

I believe it was a freshman relationship (first love) that went down a bad path... They had "relations" she ended up pregnant & had an abortion, he left her and over the course of the following week she couldn't handle being alone & realizing she "killed" her baby (sin & stopping baby's breath) so she took valium and overdosed and died. The boyfriend is now realizing this, but doesn't want to be blamed or take responsibility... So, he put's it all on her stating "I won't be held responsible; she fell in love in the first place."

At least he feels bad about the situation, and he's coming to terms with it. Nothing like loosing 2 people in one month!

yep...nice song indeed :)

You guys have it all wrong. The lyric is "stomping baby's breath". Like the flower used at weddings. Now they realized they rushed into getting married or married too young and he wants to get divorced. And the second verse is about his friend breaking up with his girl and she was so hurt she killed herself.
by Sara on 10/15/2010 2:28pm
Farrah, the lyrics are DEFINITELY stop a babys breath. There have been interview with the writer of this song. "stop a babys breath and a shoe full of rice" is in reference to aborting a baby and thus having no reason to force these two young people to get married, as is common. An other part that many don't understand is when he says "I can't be held responsible cause she was touching her face". This is actually a reference to the music video for "I touch myself" where she is seductively touching her face (and other parts). Of course, the boy here is basically saying she was seducing him and he wasn't asking for what happened, that he was basically a victim- or at least that's what he has to tell himself.

Listen, this song is about a girl falling for a guy, but the guy doesn't love her in return. They were both freshman, hence the name, and so she killed herself! No abortion with the matter. Indeed the song may have references to things like abortion and marriage and complicated things for that matter, but in all honesty, you cannot only refer to ONE lyric. The song as a whole is about suicide of a young girl from heartbreak.
PS: Lol i'm only ten years old I'm an author so I'm in my writer mode right now!

I believe its stomp on babys breathe and a shoe full of rice. It's about getting married too young not about a baby dying it seems.
by ashley on 4/1/2012 3:16pm
The lyrics are not accurate its stomp on baby's breath

Wow!! Thanks for all the cool comments to read... I love this song too! I remember dancing to it with this beautiful girl at Michigan State University... Hey Amy... If your out there... Never made the abortion connection to the song but it makes sence... I always felt like the song related to drug addiction... That maybe he was involved with a woman who was addicted to drugs who may have overdosed and died... How young lives can be taken by crack heroin and pills..

to read these comments I can see that you are all so young and its easy to see why it appeals to you. He could just be writing about ennui, something that he probably only barely understands, as does the person who thinks they know what it feels like to lose 2 that they love at one time, something that you can conceptualise but the reality is so much more than your imagination (or as Horatio was supposed to have said oh....there are more things in heaven & earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy) History tailgates
