I KNOW IT'S OVER Lyrics

Artist: The Smiths

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Oh ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
See, the sea wants to take me
The knife wants to slit me
Do you think you can help me ?
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you)
And I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, la ...
I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said :
"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?
I know ...
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes guts to be gentle and kind
Over, over
Love is Natural and Real
But not for you, my love
Not tonight, my love
Love is Natural and Real
But not for such as you and I, my love
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can even feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...

by Willow on 10/29/2008 11:26pm
Incredibly beautiful, and Jeff Buckleys hauntingly bitter sweet version is exquisite. His casual thanks & goodbye at the end break my heart.
by Lost my life support on 11/14/2008 10:16pm
perfect for someone like me, from the looks of these comments i guess this pain has a way of bringing like minded people together

too bad we're all alone =/
by Grubbanax on 11/20/2008 9:18pm
Does anyone know who it is about?
Morrissey is almost certainly gay (although he always said he was celibate).
by Caroline on 11/29/2008 1:19pm
I like how most songs by the Smiths make you feel like they're about you. And it's good to know that a lot of people feel this way, it connects people.
by Daydream Believer on 11/30/2008 7:03am
"love is natural and real but not for you my love" -slimply heart wrenching lyrics. Beautiful but so depressing. I can connect to the lyrics, sadly.
by Valerie...healing on 12/2/2008 5:27pm
Listened to Jeff Buckley sing as I read the lyrics, Im lost for words, so excruatingly painful and magnificantly beautuful......I feel just as raw as when he told me there was someone else. Istn it strange to think that all us mere mortals are capable of feeling such pain, and some of us capable of seeing the beauty in it.
by betina on 12/10/2008 2:18pm
so many people, but one soul...
by jake of this place on 12/10/2008 3:21pm

"It's so easy to laugh/It's so easy to hate/It takes strength to be gentle and kind"

So so true. I keep having to remind myself of this every time I speak to my ex girlfriend who I still love and miss dearly.
by Clouded sunshine on 12/21/2008 3:29pm
Searing irony that my ex also loved the Smiths and this song is so poignant... I know it's over And it never really began But in my heart it was so real... Ultimately, he'll end up on his own at night, but still I cling...
by Vicar in a tutu on 12/21/2008 5:02pm
So much of everything ever felt squeezed into a lyric. Magnificent.

Response to: wrong! on 10/14/2008 12:06am
The line is "Guts". It takes guts to be gentle and kind. This is classic Morrissey. If you own the CD all you have to do is open the case to see the lyrics. Every Smith's album included the lyrics.

by Musiclover on 2/20/2009 11:57am
Way overrated. Ne Me Quitte Pas is far more poignant (and tuneful). Morrissey is one of the most overfeted artists out there. I just don't get it.

this song makes me think on
a lonely day..

right when he says "If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?

Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking

by a charming man on 3/13/2009 9:04pm
lovely...
by Little Baby Nothing on 3/16/2009 9:34am
I'm on the other side of this, the person it's written about & it still hurts, even if you're not the one at the sh*tty point of the love triangle. The bit that says "if you're so.... why are you on your own tonight?" just sums up what I want to say to him. If he was as funny/clever/entertaining/good looking as he thinks he is, maybe he wouldn't be on his own tonight. These words work for everyone involved, not just the one who ends up alone.
by penisgonzales on 3/17/2009 4:09am
I believe he has succeeded in truly synchronizing himself with the core of his soul, which in return amplifies the transcending multi-dimensional definition of humanity we all are. It resonates within all of us because it is the sum of our experience channeled via music. It's something that our biological vessels are sometimes limited and tormented by, not being able to convey the true divine substance. That's why I lost her, and she'll never know how I feel. It is subjective pain. I love you all!!!
by fascistbourgeoisiepigdog on 3/24/2009 8:11pm
This used to be the song I most identified with, ever - to the point where I was convinced morrisey had plagiarised my thoughts. Now I have a beautiful wife, four beautiful children and a life which back then seemed an impossible dream; things change...

by a compulsive daydreamer on 7/31/2009 6:14pm
I can relate SO much to all of it, but specially to the part when it says "I know it's over and it never really began, but in my heart it was SO real"
It's unrequited love... big dreams that never came or will come true. :( weeps.
by Sebastian on 8/24/2009 6:13pm

by Nobody on 9/4/2009 1:55am
I'm sorry you love your boyfriend more than me
by life is over on 9/7/2009 11:20pm
It IS about unrequited love. I was 13 when this song came out and I'm now 36, and I still feel like I live inside the song. I will be alone forever. At least Morrissey understands.
by Irish Blood on 9/9/2009 8:21pm
This is the song that saved my life all those years ago, when I thought I was the only one whose world had fallen apart....one of my favourite Smiths songs...I still worship at the alter of Morrissey
by Caitlín on 9/11/2009 11:18am
This song hurts every time I hear it, but it is a lovely pain, a beautiful pain...though I have only ever been unrequited, and 21 years isn't that long, it seems like I've lived for a millennium on my own. I would love to meet Morrissey, my muse, his passions and pains are just like mine...
by Ella on 9/23/2009 6:54pm
Seriously, i love this song, because it's so true and it speaks for real things, it;s not just one of those common songs about breakups and parties. So true.
by Damion on 9/24/2009 6:03pm
My wife left me and I find myself listening to this more and more.

Although morrissey can write some great lyrics, joseph arthur is the best lyricist when it come to writing about past relationships. The man reads my mind and makes it sound beautiful in lyrical form!

Morrissey isn't gay he is Asexual, not that it effects the song in anyway.
