To me, it told the story of the extent a young man can go to get the materials (money especially) to prove his love to a sweetheart. My knowledge of the track coincided with my then watching the blockbuster movie 'The Champ ' in the early 80s.
To date, I still appreciate both works and they, with several songs by the late Barry White like 'Lucille' and 'The Gambler' moulded my personal philosophy.
