That's how almost all Soul Coughing songs are written -- he takes a bunch of words that sound cool together and puts a beat underneath. They're not at all guaranteed to make the slightest bit of sense.

Right here he is talking about an elevator. A verb, a moving thing, something that is unseen - that draws you upwards. Best part of the song. There is something wonderful about looking out the window of a moving elevator as it raises you above the city below - and it is one of those few places in a public place that you can often find yourself alone.
