by jack on 6/26/2008 12:13pm Great song. Melodrama of the "Impossible Dream" variety (at least in the Righteous Brothers version). The lyrics are best felt and not examined because they don't make sense. He, like a tide, rushes in to touch her(the shore). And when he does he finds peace like the tide at its ebb (furthest from shore)? Her arms are a web--mixed methaphors.
by jack on 6/27/2008 4:33am I was confused about the meaning of ebb tide thinking it meant low tide. Actually it is the period as the tide recedes between high and low tides (taking several hours). Perhaps it makes more sense than I thought.The ebbing tide may be seen as relaxing (as in a warm embrace after lovemaking) after the forceful rise.
by Jennie on 9/14/2008 7:42am I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever. The song rises just like a wave - it peaks crashes on the "shore" and then becomes calm just like the ocean. I've often thought about this song because it takes just one moment in time. It is so unusual and poignant. That one moment when you reach out to someone and hope they will return that love. I really can't think of any other song that talks about that one moment like this song does.
by Gerry on 11/30/2008 8:26am I remember seeing Jerry Calona (an American comedian) sing Ebb Tide at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool,probably 1950's. I wonder if he wrote it or had it written for him. I wonder if anyone else rembers seeing him.

I was a teenager when this first came out and it still gives me goose-bumps. Another one which is awesome is Scot Walker ex Walker Brothers called Johanna. Good stuff---they don't make music like this anymore.
