Georgia On My Mind Lyrics

Artist: Ray Charles
Album: Georgia On My Mind

Georgia, Georgia,
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I'm say Georgia
Georgia
A song of you
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

I said Georgia,
Ooh Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

Georgia,
Georgia,
No peace, no peace I find
Just this old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I said just an old sweet song,
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I could listen to Ray Charles sing this all day.
I like Willie Nelson's version also.
by Seajay from Georgia on 6/3/2008 9:29pm
This song is longer and it was also written by Stuart Gorrell, composed by Hoagy Carmichael. Here's the parts Good Ole' Honest Ray Charles Left Out. Ray Charles did not write this song, but his heirs has no problem allowing people to think he did.

Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.

Melodies bring memories
That linger in my heart
Make me think of Georgia
Why did we ever part?

Some sweet day when blossoms fall
And all the world's a song
I'll go back to Georgia
'Cause that's where I belong.

seajay...I do not believe anyone ever considered Ray Charles to be the writer of Georgia on my Mind and if he left out lyrics..that is standard practice within the context of the arrangement.
He did a great job on the tune and made it "famous"

i was in georgia for the masters golf in 1991. i keep singing the song from atlanta to augusta that the driver of the van said, "hey, man, you are more georgian than me now, can't you see?"
i now sing "georgia" in bars here in manila every time i am requested to come up the stage -- accompaniment or no accompaniment..

by padretango on 9/22/2008 9:48pm
The song writer conceives a song, but it only becomes alive when an interpreter lends his/her voice to it. Ray Charles makes Georgia in My Mind alive. Maybe there were others before him, but for my generation he is the one who performs that miracle.
The author captured the universal feeling of longing for the place were we grew up, that sweet place that will never again exist. It is a mirage because essentially is not geography but time, that precious time in our lives that will never come back, what creates our nostalgia. Even if we could go back to those old places, we could never again find our lost self: "The one who departs never comes back." (It will never be the same person.)

No one can EVER sing this song like the GREAT Ray Charles! It brings back so VERY many memories for me and probably for you as well. I had the GREAT privilege and pleasure of hearing Ray perform this and MANY of his other hits at the Asbury Park Music (Convention?) Hall in the EARLY '60s and have NEVER forgotten the passion and feelings he "put in to" this song!

No doubt that Ray Charles made this song famous. But yes, it is true, he is not the original composer. That honour goes to Hoagy Carmichael. Funnily enough I heard another singer (Malcolm McNeill) doing a rendition of the Hoagy Carmichael version before I ever heard Ray Charles sing it.

This song truly reminds me to always believe in oneself. It reminds me of how it is to lose oneself within the noise of the world.Mr charles was mislead in a way or two for a period in his life but more importantly he never lost that beautiful gift of himself and the most gracious gift of all, our memories and how that added to our lives.what is even cooler he is affecting a whole new generation of people I find it so very distasteful that it took till 1974 to stop banning Mr.Ray Charles music. Some one must have had a ahaaaah haaaa moment when they finally made Georgia On My Mind the state song!!!!!!!!!!!!!God Bless you I would also love to Thank Jamie Fox for doing such an excellent job in the movie! thank you for sharing your beautiful souls.May god continue to bless your families.THANKYOU

As Seajay from Georgia posted two years ago Ray Charles didn't write the Lyrics to this tune. Hoagy Carmichael wrote the music and Stuart Gorrell the lyrics (in 1930). You should correct your info.
by Matt on 7/25/2010 6:18pm
Someone who said that noone can ever sing that song like Ray Charles did, should, (if they haven't done so already), check out the footage, I think from a Finnish TV station in the mid 60's, of the Spencer Davis Group.

Steve Winwood modelled his vocals on Ray Charles and the R C version of Georgia On My Mind inspired him to sing in that way, to the point where a lot of people, especially in America thought Winwood was black.

If there is one prime example of matching up to Ray Charles's version, it's the Spencer Davis Group version.

Steve Winwood gave excellent tribute to a legend at the time and since then is now a legend himself.

Black Blues singers more than made a mark on musics history, right back to people like Robert Johnson and Blind Blake and as in the prime case of Ray Charles, their legacy and influence should never be forgotten.

by CYNNOMORE on 7/22/2011 7:11am
Quoting Claudette Robinet from France:"A sad story of black people."

WHAT? HUH? This song is universal and has nothing to do with whether you're black brown purple or green. I don't even see where one would conclude that sentiment from the lyrics. Maybe there is a language barrier as I see you are from France?

These are not the original lyrics from Ray Charles's Singular Genius recording sessions. They should be:

Georgia, Georgia
The whole day through (the whole day through)
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)

I said-a Georgia, Georgia
A song of you (A song of you)
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

I said Georgia, oh Georgia
No peace I find (No peace I find)
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

Woah Georgia, Georgia
No peace, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)

I said just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

by haley on 3/25/2012 8:04pm
I agree with Joshua, ray is a one of a kind and deandre or any other American idol ect. That thinks they can even come close to singing this song with the soul, and feeling that ray did is delusional. Ray Charles was a great man, wonderful musician, and loving father, don't butcher his songs with your unfit voice.

This was one of my mum's favourite songs, and It was played at her funeral, it's my favourite song ever - I've sung it myself countless times.

I've heard one theory that Hoagy Carmichael had a housekeeper called Georgia, and it was about her, another that is about the state of Georgia.

Whatever it's about, for me, the song is about the pain, and sweetness of longing for something that has long past, a place, a person, whatever it may be, it is about the sentiments we feel for things long gone from us - it is a beautiful song, and will always be played and performed.

Having grown up in Georgia and having lived in other states for many years because of the military I feel this song was made for me! Georgia is still where my heart is, and I will be one day! Ray Charles is simply the best, and I don't believe anyone else can sing this song with the feeling and passion he does! Because even though he didn't live in Georgia for a long time he was born there and listening to him sing this song seems to be where his heart was! When I get lonely for my home all I have to do is listen to Ray sing this song!

Hoagy Carmichael was from Indiana and had never been to Georgia. The saxophonist Frankie Teshemacher said he gonna your Georgia and wanted a song about the state so hoagy who was in grad school wrote it and had his good friend and room mate I believe Stu Gorrell write the lyrics. Gorrell had never written song lyrics before. I love the song and play it and sing often but the lyrics are pretty clunky. As far as blind pianists has no one ever heard of George Shearing (as well as the aforementioned Art Tatum).
