Common People Lyrics

Artist: Pulp
Album: Different Class

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge,
she studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College,
that's where I,
caught her eye.
She told me that her Dad was loaded,
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola."
She said "Fine."
and in thirty seconds time she said,

"I want to live like common people,
I want to do whatever common people do,
I want to sleep with common people,
I want to sleep with common people,
like you."

Well what else could I do -
I said "I'll see what I can do."
I took her to a supermarket,
I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere,
so it started there.
I said pretend you've got no money,
she just laughed and said,
"Oh you're so funny."
I said "yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.
Are you sure you want to live like common people,
you want to see whatever common people see,
you want to sleep with common people,
you want to sleep with common people,
like me."
But she didn't understand,
she just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop,
cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool,
pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right,
cos when you're laid in bed at night,
watching roaches climb the wall,
if you call your Dad he could stop it all.

You'll never live like common people,
you'll never do what common people do,
you'll never fail like common people,
you'll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and drink and screw,
because there's nothing else to do.

Sing along with the common people,
sing along and it might just get you through,
laugh along with the common people,
laugh along even though they're laughing at you,
and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool.

I want to live with common people,
I want to live with common people etc...

It is a great song. especially the version with William Shatner speaking the lines - it is great - I can just imagine his character from Boston Legal (Denny Crane) doing it.
by Logan on 6/10/2008 9:33pm
Shatner's version was better.

"She told me that her Dad was loaded" ?
can anyone explain who is "Dad" here?
by nutter on 6/28/2008 3:17pm
"dad" is her father
"loaded" means he has loads of money
by eric on 7/5/2008 12:04am
this would make a really good punk song. picture it with a quicker tempo and more angry and imagine the pistols playing it.
still great as it is though.

Best Song Ever!!! Here are the missing verses:

Like a dog lying in a corner,
they'll bite you and never warn you.
Look out.
They'll tear your insides out.

'Cause Everybody hates a tourist,
especially one who thinks
it's all such a laugh.
Yeah, and the chip stains' grease
will come out in the bath.
You will never understand
how it feels to live your life
with no meaning or control
and with nowhere left to go.
You're amazed that they exist
and they burn so bright,
while you can only wonder why.

I wanna live like Hindi people.

"Comb your hair and be polite
Do your homework every night
Don't smoke fags and don't play pool
Do extremely well at school
Take a medical degree
Graduate at 33
Move back in with mom and dad
Even though they drive you raving mad
You sure... You wanna live like Hindi People"

May Powell, How can you find the most exciting, dynamic, brilliantly clever, heart-felt, and incredibly powerful song in the world sad?
by Dez on 9/30/2009 5:47pm
It's very clever. I believe the sad reference is to the subject of the song - the middle class, spoon fed, idiot trying to be cool by acting a bit rough around the edges.

I'm proper middle class and proud of it! :)
by Ivana Vojak on 10/29/2009 2:23am

Goerge Orwell got it spot on in "1984" and Jarvis set it to music.

Since when are the Greek people,Pretentious art fart, rich kids slumming it? Greeks are poor hard working people, Who grew up as peasants like me.Its' a great song none the less,But Mr. "Shats" versions much better. Dont come to NYC, because , I'll make you eat the first sentence on stage. You too cool shabby chic poser !
by lee on 2/20/2010 8:16am
@ captpike714:
Well, in the nineties, only rich Greek people could afford to send their children abroad for studying. It has a point.
Nowadays anyone can go study abroad.

Regardless of the nationality, there are a lot of young people today with parent's money who want to rebel from all that well being, but in the end embrace all of that hard cash.

I think this song satires it in a very poetic way. Love it!
by vongrimm on 2/20/2010 7:36pm
william shatners version is complete fucking rubbish.
by scarlett on 3/4/2010 10:18am

I'm not a big fan of Pulp's other material or Jarvis's solo stuff, but THIS SONG IS PURE GENIUS!!!! Listened to it this AM on the way to work. I remember one time years ago listening to this song in my car and crying. It summed up my life pretty well at the time.

Grupiepa, he's really not saying common people are blessed at all. He's saying poor people have it really, really hard, and rich people can be ignorant.

St Martins is still very much like this, polarised between rich idlers who want to work vaguely in fashion or somesuch, and people working night jobs to fund their study.

Overseas students in england have to pay way more than brits, europes about 4 times the fees, outside europe is something like 10 times as much iirc.
by Janice Dean on 7/31/2010 12:54pm
This says more about class in England than a million words of academic sociological analysis.
As a socialist and a product of the Britpop era, I want this played at my funeral!
by Benny Boy on 8/3/2010 7:18am
Genius. This song nails it. If you look for a song with balls, more than just pop, this must be in the top ten of all time.

Bcoz' not a lot of girl's who want to live with poor condition or live with comment people.... The poor it's cool that's the point of this song's....
by Sophia on 3/27/2011 5:25pm
Great song. Music and lyrics.
Thats to say that in the nineties the Greek dads were still loaded and could send their precious daughters at St Martin's college or at any posh college, which is opposite to nowadays, where Greece is the last in the rank and families struggle to cope. The good times have passed fast, Greeks are now the cool poor, and only coz they joined the bloody euro.

First time I heard this, I cried b/c it took me back to my youth when I was very very poor. I'm not now, but I sure do appreciate what I have, unlike the girl in the song. Truer lyrics were never spoken.

by Sten on 6/12/2012 10:40pm
The Shatner version kicks the original's ass, amazingly enough. It has the fierceness and tempo this song needs. Unfortunately the original sounds like it was sung by the very hipsters the song mocks.
by Doofushead on 6/27/2012 1:55pm
Irony is the song is written by a Western band, part of a culture where even poor is often far from what suffering some people experience.

Might as well just admit we're all mostly a bunch of spoiled brats.
by voiceofreason on 7/5/2012 8:34am

by Outraged on 8/29/2012 3:36pm
I have nothing against Shatner but I do not get how people can say that his version is better. This is the original and it was sung about Brits by Brits, it has a message in this version rather than just funny for money.
