Heartattack In A Layby Lyrics

Artist: Porcupine Tree
Album: In Absentia

I pull off the road
East of Baldock and Ashford
Feeling for my cell
In the light from the dashboard

Hissing from the road
The smell of rain in the air con
Maybe check the news
Or just put a tape on

Lighting up a smoke
I've got this feeling inside me
Don't feel too good

If I close my eyes
And fell asleep in this layby
Would it all subside
The fever pushing the day by

Motor window wind
I could do with some fresh air
Can't breathe too well

(She waits for me. Home waits for me.)

I guess I should go now
She's waiting to make up
To tell me she's sorry
And how much she missed me
I guess I'm just burnt out
I really should slow down
I'm perfectly fine but
I just need to lie down

We'll grow old together
We'll grow old together
We'll grow old together....

actually what i picture in my mind is a middle age guy in his 40ies, he's just had a rough experience and a sudden surprise from the woman she loves(or wife ) and due to this pressure while he's moving in the car he has a heart attack and h stops by and tries different thing just to relax himself and at the end he can only hold on to the illusion that he has someone waiting for him and he's not alone...the first lines are just to create the right atmosphere and the last lines are what keeps someone at bay(right before dying)....it's just amazing how steven could figure at such a dramatic feeling and illustrate it through such BEAUTIFUL music...you can listen to this song for hours

I think the whole thing is metaphorical. For me it represents a struggle with life and boredom towards all the struggling that life implies. It's also being tired of suffering because of love but yet, he decides to continue and for me the last lines are what he keeps telling himself, trying to convince himself, to keep going. Even though maybe he knows it might be a lie, he's holding on to it because he has nothing better. But then maybe it's only my own gloomy mood that is blinding me.

Always interesting to hear how words are interpreted. In this case, I see this as much more straightforward (and sad). A man is unaware that he is dying until too late, with his last thoughts being of going home to his woman who did/said something that caused him to get away for a while. The sad part is that she'll forever regret not having had the chance to make up... Even as he dies, he knows that whatever happened between them wasn't final. But she'll never know that.
