Sister Christian Lyrics

Artist: Night Ranger

Sister Christian
Oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one
To say O.K.
Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don't want to play no more with you
It's true

You're motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight

Babe you know
You're growing up so fast
And mama's worrying
That you won't last
To say let's play
Sister Christian
There's so much in life Don't you give it up
Before your time is due
It's true
It's true yeah

Motoring
What's your price for flight
You've got him in your sight
And driving thru the night
Motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight

Motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight
(repeat)

Sister Christian
Oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one
To say O.K.
But you're motoring
You're motoring

My grandsons, ages 3 & 5, sing this. However, instead of "motoring" they think they are supposed to sing "deodorant"!!!
by Jesse on 5/21/2008 5:48pm

by Heather on 5/22/2008 10:35pm
Wow, I always thought "Motoring" was "Motor revved" I'm glad I looked it up. Now I won't sound as silly singing it in the car.

This song is about a good Christian girl and not giving up her virginity before she's truly ready. It is cheesy...
by meisdac on 6/13/2008 12:13am

either way
it's a classic. hit me up if you wanna talk music. or life.
:)
by Born in the 80s on 6/18/2008 8:57pm
I love this song. The song reminds me of how girls where back in the day. Well that day is gone lol.
by Kim on 6/18/2008 10:36pm
This song is about the lead singer's younger sister, "Christie". The song is about her growing up and coming of age. "Motoring" means to cruise the strip. Ya know...we all went "cruising" in high school and we though we were sooo cool! Looking back, it was all so cheesy!
by Michelle on 6/19/2008 11:28am
I LOVE this song!

yeah i first heard this with the GTA Vice City Soundtrack. the best GTA or any videogame soundtarck for that matter. i came 2nd in a poll recently for best game soundtarck, beaten by a tony hawks game, its load of bollocks, Vice Ciy IS THE BEST!
by Sister J on 6/25/2008 8:55pm
This song makes the scene it's in in Boogie Nights my favorite scene in a movie ever - if you haven't seen the movie and you love this song 'you're time has come'.
by JR on 6/26/2008 10:50am
I always think of Boogie Nights and a gun randomly going off when I hear this.
by Sir Doggie Dinkels on 6/27/2008 11:45pm
It is sad, but I'm about to turn 39, heard this song about 23 years ago! Cheesy maybe, but I had the mullet back then to my butt and rocked in bands. It was all about crusing and chicks back then. Motoring makes me think of my first girlfriend and how we listened to this song and got laid. So much for the meaning of the song....I'm guessing Sister "Christine" did too back then. This was written for the sister of the drummer!
by Nicole on 6/28/2008 9:41am
Only one word is needed: Awesome. If you should add another word, the only preceeding word should be fucking.
by goraad on 6/28/2008 4:23pm
I loved this song back then, always thought it said motoring, but didn't know what it meant. So I concluded it was saying 'more than in'.Turns out I was right!THANKS for the definition Kim!Thank you too lyrics depot!
by jake on 6/29/2008 1:41pm
i heard this song on GTA Vice City and fell in love with it...then i stopped playing the game because it got boring after i beat it...so i hadnt heard the song for awhile...then i was watching a Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades DVD and they sang this song...i had no idea that jack blades was in night ranger...but now i do...great song...great lyrics...great meaning
by Erica on 7/2/2008 5:08am
I also thought it said "motor head", but I wasn't sure. I've liked it for a long time, but my passion was rekindled in Superstar.
by dave on 7/5/2008 10:21pm
I've always thought that this song was about a "Christian" girl who never gave it up to the boys who were not in her class of society and so had been waiting for the rich career minded "man". She put a price on her sexuality.
by Siri Brudevold on 7/6/2008 10:54am
Dude. I first heard this song at the american shakespeare center. or the blackfriars. the worlds only recreation of shakespeare's indoor theatre btw. and i loved it

I liked the song 30 years ago and I like it now--motoring!!!
by Zachariah on 7/16/2008 12:12pm
I was only 19, when this song came out in 1984. MTV played this song on heavy rotation, with Heart's "These Dreams", and Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science". All cheesy 80s shyt. This song really rocked my core in Boogie Nights- where in one of the movie's darkest moments; a drug deal gone bad....Rashad Jackson smokes his freebase pipe, listening to this tune. Great movie.....good song!
by Bill on 7/16/2008 4:07pm
It's just a great, heart-felt ballad with a sweet, wistful message, a wonderful summertime sing-along song with cool chord structure! I, like most of the otehr commenters, loved it when I first heard it and still do. It's definitely on my i-pod.
by Brittney on 7/18/2008 9:57am
This song just plain rocks. Me and my brother constantly sing it in the car, b/c we listen to an 80's station. the 80's had good music, but this one tops my chart
by Angie on 7/22/2008 9:21am
My husband and I just saw Night Ranger in concert this past weekend and they totally rocked. They left the stage before this song was sung and I thought there was going to be a riot! They came out for the encore and the place went nuts when they started up with this song. It was awesome and they sounded just as good now as they did back in the day. Love it!!
by Scott on 7/27/2008 7:13pm
Well this song has outlived its usefulness. Night Ranger was yesterdays news. Why they are still around I have no clue.
by aidan on 7/29/2008 7:45pm

I was a freshman in '84. My sister was 21 and killed in a car accident. My brothers, one of whom died 2 years later, and I always felt this song was somehow for her, despite some of the other interpretations on here. It brings back alot of memories.

I'm 17 and know REO Speedwagon. Night Ranger was always one of REO's "buddies" but I never took the time to listen to them.

I was working on the set of a movie a couple weeks ago and one of the coolest people I worked with asked me if I knew his song when I was playing guitar for him. I said no.

I recently heard it on the radio and it rocks... Thank you, Trinidy, for inspiring me to take the time to listen to it.
by ??? on 9/20/2008 5:02pm

It was in two American Dad episodes "Joint Custody" and "Dope and Faith". Reviving a kick-ass song for today's youth. Sweet.

I used to listen to this song when I was a little kid...LOL
by Ed on 10/16/2008 12:22am
I loved this song growing up. Now I think it is about a girl considering the convent (should she enter the convent and become a religious sister, where she would take a vow of chastity). And I know what the band says, but read the lyrics!
The band doesn't seem to support her possible vocation!
by James on 10/20/2008 7:13pm
Damn!! Thats fucking awesome! Haha!!
by Scoots on 10/20/2008 11:36pm
Huh.I thought it said "mold your end".Whatever the case,I'm a Night Ranger fan for life.Loved them when i was a kid, then took my kids to see them at a festival in suburbs of chicago this summer. They loved it.It was very special for me,having loved NR for so long and never getting a chance to see them until recently. The song writing, vocal abilities/melodies and raw emotion & energy is what separates these guys from most of the crap we hear on the radio today.I hope they keep doing what they do.
by b. brown on 10/22/2008 3:11pm
i'm 43 i was 17-18 when this song came out. and my girlfriend's last name was "christian" and you know the deal......she left, motor'in.

by bostinhouseYahoo on 11/15/2008 1:47pm
Obviously the song is about a once puberescent girl who is no longer accepted with just playing ring around the rosie with the boys- She wakes up one day a raging hormonal young lady who sets her site on her first male love- Her choice-who'll be 1st Love- What she willing to do as she motors after him with her family nervous- It's time- New Reputuation girl to young woman-
lnstills the passion of the past- The 1st realization of a girl eyes focus squarely on you- thatz the 1st day you miss basball practice to sit under the stands with your 1st love- Motoring- Woman on a mission- Be careful boys- Motoring- She'll be find but not really sure about him when she moves on! Motoring
What's your price for flight
You've got him in your sight
And driving thru the night
Motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight
Classic Rock Ballant that even make this old dude feel young once again!

LOVE THIS SONG! One of my favorites. Great band! (not better than Journey, but still a great band)
by dan on 1/15/2009 6:17pm
This song is always laughed at for its stupid lyrics. But Night Ranger had lots of other songs which are awesome and sound nothing like this sore on their career.
by Fan of NR on 1/15/2009 10:48pm
You know your getting old when you're asked "Who's Night Ranger and why are they singing about a nun?" Saw 'em live at Monsters of Rock in '89. They were great then and they're great now. Sister Christian is one of my favorite NR songs :-)
by brad on 1/18/2009 1:44pm

Janstar is the definition of "Motoring" To Drive Or Travel in a motor vehicle or also to carry by motor vehicle. Hope that helps.
by Chastastic on 1/23/2009 7:26am
Definitely one of the top 80's songs... but I completely agree with Suwannee48... definitely not better than Journey!

Night Ranger was great back in 1979. Yes, they were. Their tour after the first album absolutely rocked. They went to SHIT after their 80s release of their second album. Can you say BUBBLEGUM ROCK anyone???
Just like Aerosmith who went the same way, I never listened to any of their stuff since.
I cannot believe all the younder r-tard posts here that are saying "This Song Rocks! I Love This! etc." Too many kids raised drinking flouridated water I guess. So sad to witness an intellectually void generation.
(please feel free to substitute the word "vapid" for "void")

Oh yeah!! Those were the day's of Yore!! We who grew up in the 80's were the end of an era. A time when a fight didn't involve guns or knives but fists. How about going to keggers and the cops showing up. Instead of getting hauled off,you just lost your taps and were told to go home only to regroup and continue to party on thru the night. Ah those were OUR DAY'S!!! Kudos to all who grew up in the 80's, we lived in a not so complicated time, we were the last of the lucky ones!! By the way...this song still ROCKS (mid-life or not!)
by khro on 2/13/2009 5:49am
still loving it yo!best
by listener on 2/13/2009 10:46pm
I heard this song when I was a kid back in 1984, when the 'motoring' sounded like 'motor inn' and the 'sister christian' title suggested that those 'Night Rangers' are going to set the facts straight with that perverted sister. Lyrics are not always what they seem.

This song is about a whore. She gives "Hummers" (motoring). The dudes are asking how much she costs, then decide they don't want any of her action cause she's a slut. Mommy is worrying that she wont last because it's a hard life in the streets on your knee's. I have cracked the code! Jealous?

by Al Lickertwat on 6/25/2009 10:59am
Good song
by Daver on 6/28/2009 8:07pm
The song was written by the drummer Kelly Keagy, about his little sister Chisty, the other band members always though it was "sister Christian". It's about him watching her grow up and "motoring" cruising the strip on the weekends with her friends. Sorry no slut or crazy mother in the building. From the writer himself
by paigey. on 7/6/2009 1:39am
i love this song.
by Victor Harari on 7/12/2009 4:51am
This song is quite simply about a man pleading with a girl he cares about to slow down and take it easy, that she has happiness and fulfilment in her sights, but that her out of control restlessness and "motorin'" will only get in her way and into trouble, and her unending quest for the financial good life will also hurt her, ie, "what's your price for flight, in finding Mr. Right?"

You'll be alright, tonight.
by Grim on 7/12/2009 8:11am
I heard this song for the first time in ages with playing GTA: Vice City. It reminded me of a girl who broke my heart. Now I'm all emo over it. :'(

by mike on 9/6/2009 7:45pm
I think its motoring like driving herself to find guys no mater what it takes
by Mariana on 9/18/2009 4:28pm
I think this song is about a girl that figures out she has to settle down eventually, and stop fooling around playfully with boys..not taking life seriously. A time to out your hands of the wheel and take control of her love life.
by Matt on 10/15/2009 10:09am
It about a girl who is a virgin. (sister Chritian) If she is not careful and slow down she is going to regret it. She is the only one to say ok.
by sharn on 10/22/2009 7:56pm
love this song heard it on flash forward and it brought back memories man!! I loved the 80's and I who knew they were saying What's your price for flight, always thought it was punching out for christ lol lol lol
by Matt Wilson on 10/23/2009 11:28am
This is a great song from a tune standpoint... but the lyrics fucking suck... lol. Sit and read them out loud as if you're saying them to someone. Talk about poor song writing skills, jesus. Spoken out loud (not sung) as sentences, it sounds like the inarticulate babble of a russian immigrant who has no command of the english language.
by Dan on 10/28/2009 3:55am
This is SOOO much better than the lame arse rap crap that is played nowadays.
by @Matt Wilson on 11/6/2009 3:55pm
Hate to say this, but nimrods like you are what pollute the internet with useless drivel. There are almost no classic rock songs that, when spoken aloud and attempting to make coherent sentences with, even come close to making sense. Try again douchenozzle.
by HellBilly on 11/18/2009 5:59pm
The lyrics really bite, but the sound is cool and total 80's cheese. Rock on!

I heard an interview where a Radio Announcer debated with the lead singer of Night Ranger on the correct lyrics, it was hilarous. Anyway I just needed to actually see the words to clear up my confused state of mind.

This song is about abortion don't be fooled
by lunaticfringe on 1/30/2010 7:15pm
As for the KKK you are worthless and abortion? Where do you people come from? This song is about a broken spirit, and people who are concerned! Fooled U are misinformed and KKK u are uneducated!
by Ana on 2/7/2010 12:43am
who ever wrote commented that this song is about a christian girl who does not loose her virginity, thats not what this song is about. The band's drummer wrote this song about his sister christie growing up. Then when they played the song, they changed christie to christian because it flowed more, (Like in Hey Jude, Paul McCartney changed the name Jules to Jude). The drummer was against them changing the name because the song was for his sister but they were able to convince him. (Sorry, i just can't recall any of the names from the members of Night Ranger)
by garlco.com on 2/21/2010 12:22am
There's got to be more about this song than what has been told. Seems that you'd have to get inside the song writers mind to really know what some lyrics mean, but anyway it's an awesome sounding song and I like it!
Rock On!!!!
by BG on 2/23/2010 1:16pm
Awesome song! Night Ranger is incredible. I saw them in concert 12-31-2009, and they really brought it! I miss Jeff Watson though; he brought a lot of fun energy.

by Bannor0 on 4/29/2010 12:51pm
Ann,
The name of the composer is Kelly Keagy. I happened to go to the same high school, though years later but with the same band director that helped him become the drummer he is. The song is about his sister Christy I did have the privilege to meet as my farther used to work at the local mill with his father and brother, and they were always at the company picnics. The rest of the details you got correct, as the song was about her growing up and the family being concerned. As for the rest of the band of Night Ranger, there was Jack Blades, Brad Gills, Christian Cullen, and Joel Hoekstra.

One of the most powerful rock ballads ever. I was a freshman in high school when this song came out, and it will always be one of my favorites. It brings back some really powerful memories of all those good times now long gone.
by Rachael on 6/3/2010 12:08am
LMAO, read every last comment... It's saying motoring as in motorboating... he wants to shove his head in sister christians boobs and blow while he moves his face from side to side... Just kidding... The most recent thing that comes to mind about this song is that scene in the remake of Friday the 13th when the funny guy is going off on his own at the beginning and is looking for the green herbage and he is singing that song and he soon finds the herbage and gets murdered by Jason Voorhees and it is too bad cause I liked that guy and wanted him to live or at least have a longer part. Ha ha ha ha... LOVE IT
by Heather on 6/5/2010 7:54am
I can't believe some of the comments on this page. If you want to know what the song is about read previous comments before making an uninformed dumb ass comment. Not to mention that you are on the internet, if you really wanna know what it means look it up. You'll find it.
Anyway, I've loved this song since it came out. I'm an 80's kid and this song kicks ass!!!

by JT on 10/13/2010 10:34am
Motoring is an aviation term.
Motoring is when your plan is on the tarmac and about ready for take-off. Hence, "What's your price for flight?" She is about to take off out of school into the real world. What's your price for flight,,, refers to what type of man is she going to settle for.
by Katiana on 10/19/2010 4:58pm

by Pedro on 11/17/2010 12:32am
When I heard the song Sister Christian for the first time I immediately liked it.Like the food that we eat for the first time and we instantly might like it,so it works the same way with music but instead through our taste buds it is through our ears that we are attracted to the beautiful sound of the particular music.
by Dave on 11/29/2010 2:26pm
Kelly Keagy (the drummer) grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where "Motoring" was a term for driving around with your friends, often trying to pick up girls.

by plastic arts on 6/4/2011 12:38am
read most of these comments.. i always thought "motorin'" was a peculiar word and assumed they meant "cruisin'"... JT's comment from 10/13/10 really makes sense: "Motoring is an aviation term. Motoring is when your plane is on the tarmac and about ready for take-off. Hence, "What's your price for flight?"

I have always loved Night Ranger! This song came out when I was a Junior in highschool. I listened to my cassette of them so much that my friends that all cruised with me were totally sick of it! As soon as NR came out with another album, they bought me a new and different NR cassette!
by an older person... on 7/20/2011 5:57am
Some of you people's comments crack me up. Don't you read anything before posting? "Motoring" is in the dictionary (is it really that hard to understand what it might mean)?. As far as the rest of the lyrics, they are certainly open to interpretation, but without actually talking to the writer, I would have to agree on the younger-sister-growing-up-fast story. Wasn't my FAVORITE song growing up, but today I like it more. Already it has become a ballad from "gentler" times. Sad.
by Taco Duck on 8/1/2011 8:28pm
I thout it was moter head... also i heard both parts to this song but never new it was the same song rofl
by walrus909 on 8/19/2011 5:54am
What part of the world still uses the term motoring instead of cruising? Only 90 year olds in that era would have said "Hey, wifey, let's go motoring". Or were they just clever enough to insert a better sounding word?
by loswan on 8/21/2011 9:07am
I was graduating HS and most songs to me had maybe an overall feel or one verse that made sense. Even today I never feel complete with a song and I flow through fad songs faster than avg person but I like new songs all the more. It's the song that hasnt been written yet..it's the power...the drive...and that's the win...just keep motoring!!!lol
by Roger on 8/25/2011 11:11pm
Great Tune-age anthem! Yowsa.
What amazed me is that we had the words right on, without any sound-a-like words or phrases!
by Jenny on 9/1/2011 1:53am
Rock of Ages anyone?
by Barb on 9/4/2011 5:03pm
Love this song. Couldn't understand exactly what they were saying. It sounded like motoring or motor in but didn't get it. I'm old(what do you expect),anyway I'm so old that they used to refer to motels as motor inns. So that would fit, pick up the guy and go to a motel. :0)
by John on 9/4/2011 7:23pm
its pretty bad when they do remakes of old songs for tv commercials
by darrah on 9/5/2011 2:20am
"Motor in, what's your price to find?"
That's how I heard it until I actually had to look up the lyrics to this crappy song.
by James on 9/5/2011 7:29am
You're a Fn riot Barb! Seriously funny! I never was really sure what the hell the were saying either. What the hell is motoring? It sounds like driving aimlessly/hellbent. Night Ranger...ooh Those were the days.
by jimmmybob on 9/15/2011 12:11am
Darrah your an idiot, song is sweet
by Nikkee on 9/15/2011 1:09am
It was originally "Sister Christy" and was about the drummer's sister. He actually was the lead singer on this one, too. She was mortified when she found out it was about her. Since it was misheard by other band members, it was recorded as "Sister Christian" (the way THEY heard it).

by Elizabeth on 11/16/2011 7:57am
This is one of the worst, most annoying songs I've ever heard. I hated it when it came out in the 80s, and I hate it even more now. Why did I have to hear it on the radio the other day? Now it's stuck in my head, this stupid piece of insipid crap. How and why it ever became a "hit" is just testimony to the popular music machine, because no real people I knew liked it at all.
by scienceoflove on 11/26/2011 5:10pm

Im reading most of the comments and can affirm to most of the feeling about the song. Some people first heard this when they watched Boogie Nights like me. MOst people have heard this song when it first came out. This song IS very American to me and it does make you feel youre in a better time. As a 28 year old person, i hope music returns someday as it was lost somehow...somewhere. Songs arent made like this anymore indeed.
by Sara Salazar on 2/10/2012 4:06pm
It is funny how some people is here expressing how much they hate this song and then I wonder.. how they got here in the first place, yes, looking for the song. Anyway, I am at the office, listening to my Ipod and amongst 4 thousand songs this came up, and I cannot help smiling and googling for the lyrics. :-)

Love this song...among many more 80's rock hits. Had the chance to see Night Ranger open for Journey at a concert a couple years back. It was epic. And if I had to add any other descriptive before that...it would be "fuckin'"...fuckin' epic!

Oh the memories...
Went to the states in 84 with my highschool soccer team to compete in a big soccer tournament in Spokane.
Man did we have a great time there.
And boy did the american girls love german goalies...

Sounded kind of Baptist to me (Sister Christian) and America is such a religious country, that we would all be suckers for the song. Then it explodes into a beautiful harmonic melody (motorin)and the rest is history. Classic, classic, classic! I compare "Hold me closer, tiny dancer!" and "Hot blooded!"

This song was sung by a very good friend of mine ( jody) every week at a karaoke bar down in La. I wasnt much of a fan back then, but then he died at 19 and the song has stuck with me ever since and that was 18 years ago. His older vrother (jerry) took over the karaoke and we never heard it again at the bar. Nobody could sing it after that. He is missed every day.

i used to think of the dmv whenever i heard this song because i thought they were singing about motorists and how they were so cool like astronauts taking off into space. in fact i thought the dmv made the song. it motivated me to learn how to drive. didnt know it was takling about prosttution.

My husband died this past Easter Sunday (miss him) This song just came on when I was setting my alarm when it came on. I think God would want me not to give up on life before my time. Will I find Mr Write again?
Love this song. Thanks

When this song and the video originally came out I thought both were insipid. I saw an idiotic article about it yesterday and suddenly the stupid song was once again in my head. I finally, after all these years, checked out the lyrics because I had always thought I heard "motoring" and always thought "surely not." Now I know: It IS "motoring" and suddenly the song seems even more stupid. I'm so sorry I had to think about it again.

the first time I Heard this song by night ranger, I was feeling very sad and at the same time very lonely. I was captivated by the lyrics and soon after my sadness & loneliness went away; from that time on I love this song, and perhaps I will continue loving it forever.
