Northern Sky Lyrics

Artist: Nick Drake
Album: Way To Blue

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

I've been a long time that I'm waiting
Been a long that I'm blown
I've been a long time that I've wandered
Through the people I have known
Oh, if you would and you could
Straighten my new mind's eye.

Would you love me for my money
Would you love me for my head
Would you love me through the winter
Would you love me 'til I'm dead
Oh, if you would and you could
Come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

I love this song, it's my first wedding dance song, and the lyrics are going to be on our wedding program.

My beautiful precious son Phil aged 31 has just passed away. He played Nick's songs on his guitar to perfection. We played Northern Sky whilst his friends...all surfers...carried his coffin. It was truly beautiful and so uplifting for my soul. It gave me great strength. Bless you Phil wherever you are. Love mumxxxx
by Marie on 10/5/2008 7:24am

Thinking of you and your beloved son, Phil.

I'll carry you both in my prayers.
by Matt on 11/14/2008 12:49am
So good it is almost impossible. How did he write such songs at such a young age? His soul must have been old and wise. Thanks Nick.

Punctuation is the difference between " i let my uncle Jack off the horse,
and i let my uncle Jack, off the horse"

Great song, using it for the opening of my wedding video. Romantic as anything.

I have always been wondering who sang this song when I first heard it from "Serendipity". Now, I'm saying myself, why did I let it pass all these years not knowing the songs of Nick Drake. I felt going on a coma and just woke up. since 2000.
by Kathy on 1/13/2009 8:06pm
He was incredible. I like to fancy myself a bit of a writer, but I'm terrible at writing songs. Nick Drake writes the songs I always wanted to. I can't fault him for that, though. They're amazing.
by Paul on 2/8/2009 4:55pm
so, Stacy and Laura are getting married?? I don't understand anything... well , yes, that Nick's Drake songs are absolutly beautifull.
by dada on 2/12/2009 9:36pm

by Ben on 2/26/2009 4:00pm
The second track of his second album 'Hazey jane II' is my favourite, its one that acctually makes me real happy! But River man is also great, the orchestral movements are fantastic.
by sweetness on 3/9/2009 9:19am
"Pink Moon" my favorite by Nick...but then again, they're all good by him...
by Paul M. on 3/19/2009 11:26am
My family & friends used this song to close a DVD tribute to me on my 50th Birthday. I`m a huge ND fan & I was in tears.

Back in the early 1970s, when DJs could still choose their own music, a Houston radio station played Nick Drake. I immediately went out to find the record. Our local store ordered it and it ended up taking FOREVER because it was an import--something I didn't know at the time. The first listen is still a highlight of my music memory.
by stef from holland on 7/16/2010 4:28pm
how wonderfull so manny people also loving this song!
by Aunt Marge from the North Country on 8/17/2010 2:47am
So many "fair weather" friends and family visit us in Maine thu the summer we must put tents up. An annual "Band Jam" takes place at my daughters and this year my nephews band dedicated Nothern Sky to Aunt Marge. His music has no generational barriers.A magical song is now my song.
note:ND"s family documentary is a must see!!!!!!
by Shadowalker on 8/20/2010 11:54am
He also did Pink Moon - used on a Volkswagen commercial some years ago.

I am saddened every time I hear this song to think of the pain Nick Drake must have carried in his heart throughout his lifetime. Such beautiful music that he left behind for all of us. Northern Sky is from one of my favorite movies, Serendipity,,, which gave me hope and faith that one day, the ending in the movie would come true for me. Almost 26 years later it did. It is now 6 years that my Serendipity came true and we found each other and our Northern Sky. LOVE THIS SONG !
by Rob on 3/17/2011 9:03pm
I discovered Nick Drake when I was 20 and I'm 30 and still try to get people to listen to him! What great lyrics.

Discovered ND recently..
Amazing song northern sky.
Even more amazing considering when it was released and the age of the song writer. So sad to discover he is dead.
by John on 8/15/2011 8:29am
Northern Sky was my college roommate Jon's favorite song. He played it for hours and hours. He left this earth too early by his own hand. A remarkable guy defined by an equally remarkable song. I miss him.
by Starman on 11/27/2011 8:55am
I love you Ermin and i love your choice of music
by Ermin on 11/28/2011 6:39pm

Have always loved this song and now have someone I wish to sing it to. If only my hormones would come back and I knew how to play guitar!! LOL I guess a^capella will have to do
by Seabi on 12/24/2011 12:34am
I first heard Nick Drake in 2008 when I watched Serendipity for the first time. I love the movie so much, but I must say this song is perfect for the story and the scene. I've watched the movie more than 10 times, and the scene I've lost count but I tear up everytime.
by Karije on 12/27/2011 1:42pm
I love this song. It gives me a very strong feeling of a love greater and more powerfull than anything I know. It is not from this Earth...
by giulia on 2/9/2012 12:29pm
I was just thinking "what a perfect song for a wedding" and I saw somebody already got the same idea..thanks Nick
by ablebaker on 6/19/2012 8:09am
Never thought much of this tune until the Joel Frederiksen version. I agree, the PERFECT wedding song.
by sidonie on 10/22/2012 10:49pm
This song is so perfect and beautiful. It never gets old. Somehow Nick Drake was able to capture the most ephemeral emotions...which seems really counterintuitive, but he did it.
by Richard Swanson on 1/7/2013 4:37am
My college dorm friend introduced me to the music of Nick Drake in 1987 and this song has lulled me to happy sleep for the past 25 years
by jovoco on 2/12/2013 9:29pm
my beautiful wife walked down the aisle to this song on the happiest day of my life
by Julia on 7/19/2013 10:27pm
this is amazing... this is going to be our song too! So lovely to see everyone else felt the same.
by Ricardo on 11/16/2013 12:03am
Shed a tear listening to this song one day and it dawned on me of how I felt about my life and everything I have. Truly helped me get through tough times. Its a tragedy that he left us so prematurely yet his music stood the test of time like it was recorded yesterday. R.I.P. Nick
