Galaxy Song Lyrics

Artist: Monty Python
Album: The Meaning Of Life

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

If u only new how small is the amount of people who watched Monty (or even heard the name) in my native country, Ukraine, u would realy just weep! It is imposible to translate it without loosing half of the jokes, maybe that's the reason. But, oh, we Ukrainian's have lost a lot couse of the Soviet propoganda and censure in the 60-80... No D&D, no Monty, and though things are different now, i think Monty is way to clever for some of them to understand and like... Meself is very happy that i had a period of Monty-watching in my life,
Monty Lives!
by ReBeL on 2/8/2009 3:29am

Some little pricks have been tearing apart this song for it's innaccuracies and I've checked them they're not far off so I don't know why people are complaining.
by Serena Hammond on 7/3/2009 8:10am

There once was a boy named toast he had a crusty face. Another boy was his best friend, he was nicknamed SNOW due to a lot of dandruff. Apparently they are gay together:) And then there was wood, Crab, Panda, Pigeon etc..
by plamka on 7/23/2009 1:30pm
I really like this song :)It's very nice :))
by Syzygy on 7/31/2009 10:52pm
Love the song. One inaccuracy though. Actually there are a lot more stars in the Milky Way Galaxy than a 100 billion, there are somewhere between 200 and 400 billion stars, and probably closer to 400 billion. Doesn't change the fact that the song is terrific.
by mjs on 8/23/2009 8:23pm
yikes there are many flaws but who cares. the song is brilliant.
by frankisbored on 9/16/2009 5:23pm

has anyone watched the clip for this? its funny, and i lov this song
by grahamchapmanlives on 7/7/2010 12:34pm
If all of the singers nowadays had a fraction of the talent Idle did, I wouldn't have anything to complain about music-wise. I, too, want to be Eric Idle when I grow up... The fact that I'm a girl is completely irrelevant.
by Parro on 8/25/2010 4:53pm
LOL Buger all down ere on earth.

Dunno what it means but lol
by gdemos on 9/8/2010 2:37pm

by Montyfan on 10/14/2010 10:33am
I'm substitute teaching an earth science class right now. Students are studying the galaxy. This would be a good tool to help them remember the facts, because it's funny, which would appeal to their immature brains. However, it can't be used, since it's also considered racy at the end.
by mlbg on 10/23/2010 1:17pm
i saw this moving years after graduating from college. i just watched it again with my 18 year old daughter, she was thought is was funny, bizarre and the ending very right for living life. very cool!
by omnomnomnomnom on 10/23/2010 4:21pm
i just learnt all the words to this off-by-heart so that i ace my physics mock next week :D LOL. (oh and 'Parro', bugger all is britsh for nothing, i know this cos i say it all the time :3 WOO BRITAIN!LOL.) x]
by Morgan on 10/26/2010 7:03pm

There's an American twangy county cover of this song you can find on YouTube. It changes the end to "Cuz I'm afraid that we've been cheated here on Earth"

Morgan,
What a shame the Americans have to spoil a brilliant piece of work by spoiling the song and lyrics. The Eric Idle version is the original and the best.
by Amelia on 1/1/2011 12:20pm
I TGOUGHT IT WAS THE LYRICS OF ALL OF THE SONGS THAT GALAXY HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A SHAME!!!!!!
by Americans should stop being prudes on 2/11/2011 9:05am
A cuss word can't actually hurt your children.

And yes, I *am* an American, so I have every right to criticize the prudish attitudes of my country. The Religious Wrong has no problem letting kids watch violent TV shows, but they get their knickers all in a twist if someone says a cuss word or shows a nursing mother on a medical documentary.

Priorities, people.

But back on topic... Monty Python is the best thing to have happened to comedy in two generations, and this song is among their best works.

Monty Python shows off the best of British comedy, especially this song and 'Always look on the bright side of life'. I've watched 'The Meaning Of Life' several times and the scene with this song is absolutely halarious, don't you agree?

What i would like to know is how come i've learnt more info about writers, artists, philosiphers, religion, different types of cheeses including Venezeulan Beaver cheese, and all the rest from Monty Python than i did from fifteen years at school.Or is that just me?

It has brought me many positive compliments, except for the part about the planet evolving since God and Jesus and the bible and the raaaaapppttuuurrreeeee. Thank yoy Mr. and Mrs. Python for having so many wonderful and talented children, and I hope there are more insightful comments here about the part that you liked with the liver and my head wound is making iy harf to tyuop

Monty Python's Flying Circus was first aired on TV when I was 10. I was not allowed to watch TV at night with the exception of MPFC, which only reinforces my belief that my dad was a genius. I have brought up my two boys with MP and they are "believers" who have ALWAYS understood this humor. When ever I meet someone who does not like MP it always makes me think that they either have no sense of humor or they are not very bright or both.
