10,000 Miles Lyrics

Artist: Mary Chapin Carpenter
Album: Party Doll & Other Favorites

Fare thee well
My own true love
Farewell for a while
Im going away
But Ill be back
Though I go 10,000 miles

10,000 miles
My own true love
10,000 miles or more
The rocks may melt
And the seas may burn
If I should not return

Oh dont you see
That lonesome dove
Sitting on an ivy tree
Shes weeping for
Her own true love
As I shall weep for mine

Oh come ye back
My own true love
And stay a while with me
If I had a friend
All on this earth
Youve been a friend to me

Fly Away Home, I love the movie and this song, though both make me cry.

(If you liked the actress in Fly Away Home watch Jane Eyre, it's the same actress and young Jane when the actress was a kid)

Does anyone know the origin of this song? M.C.C. did not write it. On the album and sheet music she credits the words and music as "Traditional", meaning it is a folk song. I had never heard this song before, and I know many folk songs. I would like to know more about this song, so if anyone has researhed it and has info as to it's origin, please post.
by JulesP on 11/14/2010 11:41am
James, I wish I could help with the origin. This is one of the most heart stoppingly beautiful songs I have ever heard. Together with the scene in which it is played in the movie "Fly Away Home" the full force of its beauty and sadness hit you.

I heard this song on "Fly away Home" and it truly touched me, so much so that I want it to be my wish to play it at the time of my death. My children and my ex-husband has committed to doing that for me.

The movie "Fly Away Home" came out the year my mother passed away. This song hit me where in the movie the dad tells her "she can do it, because her mother was there in her heart". Each year as the geese would start their journey south, I remember my mom standing outside and she would look up in the sky and say as the geese flew over " take me with you". This song reminds me of those moments of my mom and her peaceful journey.
