Why does there have to be so much hate over an amazing song. Folsom Prison Blues is one of my favorite Cash songs. Its not racist its not offensive at all. Its just an all around great song.

Johnny says "I do" and then went into this song. So my take is that he felt imprisoned and linked it to being no unlike being in real prison.

I think Johnny Cash is awesome, man (Even though he died in 2003, his spirit still lives on through his music) And if you've seen the "Johnny Cash Show" on DVD, you'll see that he helped break racist tensions by breaking down the barrier and reaching across and pulling people through. He had Ray Charles playing and singing "Ring Of Fire" on piano (which is one of the best songs I've ever heard on guitar OR piano) The guy's a genius, man. He came from being poor, suffering family tragedies, (like with one of his brothers when Johnny was a child.) to becoming one of the best country musicians out there. This song has nothing to do with prison or a train. You must think of the symbolism here... I see a song about a man who is depressed about his life (the prison) and the train is time. He sees everyone else having a blast with life while he is not. He wishes he could be one of those people on the train having a good time but knows he never will. The "shot a man in Reno" lyric is to tie the song back to reality and is actually very unimportant to the plot of the real story behind the lyrics. Finally, Johnny Cash may or may not be the man in the story. Those things are usually the best kept secrets of the artist. This is a great song and far deeper than many of you realize. As a lyrical artist myself, I know the real story is always hidden in the symbolism. That is how I write lyrics too. Most writers do.

It's NOT about his own personal experience, because Johnny Cash was never imprisoned in the United States. He WAS however locked up in jail quite a few times. But he never served time in Folsom Prison, the reason the song was wrote, was because of a friend he had been associated with for almost his entire life got locked up in Folsom, so he wanted to go play a show for all of them. So he wrote the song, to headline the show. It's nothing to do with Racism, or Whites, or blacks, or greens, or blues... it's about those lonesome men in there serving time and listening to that God awful train pass by 3 times a day. FYI Folsom is about 2 hours away from Reno... Not that far.It's possible to go to prison across state lines. Hate to tell you all this Johnny Cash whom I believe to be one the greats explains. He did not write this song. He wrote the tune between sets at Folsom The song was written by a man incarcerated there for life plus one day. When Johnny went out prior to the show the man approached him and asked if would look at the poem. Johnny did and wrote the tune and played it for them there. The man was so touched by the song he gave it to Johnny. Though Johnny never would confirm it rumour has it all the royalties went to the family of that man whom Johnny promised would remain anonymous. As far the song or it's author being a racist umm all I got to say to that is nuts.
