I Am Woman Lyrics

Artist: Helen Reddy

I Am Woman

-Artist: Helen Reddy from "Helen Reddy's Greatest Hits": EMI ST 11467
-peak Billboard position # 1 for 1 week in 1972
-Words and Music by Helen Reddy and Ray Burton

I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again

CHORUS
Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
'cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

CHORUS

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

FADE
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

This song embodies everything that is important in being a woman. I recommened this song for Mothers Day,May 11, 08

that song means alot and yes I AM WOMEN HEAR ME ROAR!!
by The Awesome Woman on 5/16/2008 3:16am
I am Woman tells how strong women are and can be. It's a classic song that will never fade and will allow women everywhere to stand up and be the best out there.
WOMEN!!

This song is women's lib BS. This stupid philosophy has wrecked lives, families and marriages. How incredibly childish!! 1-800-Waaaaa

i am woman too!
by Pam Green on 5/23/2008 6:32pm
Hillary should have used this for her campaign theme song.
by Adela Brent on 5/29/2008 1:02am
This is a beautiful song. We should teach it to our daughters. This is not about being better than men, it is about recognizing women for who they are: intelligent human beings who deserve respect.
by Amanda on 6/2/2008 3:37am
wow this is a great song robert what is wrong with you this is a wonderful song your so sexist whats wrong with you we should been seen as equal not divided
by Joan M on 6/2/2008 10:36am
As a breast cancer survivor, this song really speaks to me. I am wiser, stronger and hopefully invincible - but it was certainly born of pain. I am now a dragon boat racer and will personalize my paddle with some of these words.
by Chris on 6/3/2008 1:49pm
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to go...

One wonders how many women never got past the embryo stage because of modern feminism's embrace of infanticide.
by Pat on 6/3/2008 4:42pm
One of the worst, if not the worst, songs ever to go to Number #1.
by Jim C on 6/4/2008 1:18pm
Should send this to Hillary
by Steve on 6/5/2008 10:05am
Chris: I thought the same thing when I heard Rush Limbaugh play the song as a "tribute" to Over the Hillary. That aside, that line has to be the worst line in the whole song.
by Reneé on 6/6/2008 8:34pm
This song spoke to me when I was 12 and let me know I could become anything I wanted to. It's an empowering song for the women of my generation.
by Stan on 6/17/2008 12:01pm
Geez guys.... give it a rest. This is a song and great lyrics. Very uplifting and empowering. Why get so political about it? Sure it was originally written with that purpose, but take what you can use, leave the rest and quit whining. And I say all this as someone who agrees with your political views on women's lib and abortion.
by Jeff on 6/25/2008 6:01am
The lyrics are uplifting but why should the theme apply to women only. There are many men who have risen to success in the face of extreme adversity and prejudice. I think Helen had her head wedged well and truly up her backside when she wrote this song.
by Kelly Story on 6/25/2008 10:11pm
This song is a hit! I heard it on the radio the other day. It is great to let men know what a woman really is. We are strong, invincible, and wise. Hear us ROAR!
by Ivana on 6/26/2008 2:13am
Yes Jeff, I agreee, my husband is a classic example. He was an orphan confined to a boy's home and lacked love, affection and proper parental guidance. Hence, at school he was in the bottom class in the key subjects of maths science and english. His misfortune was compounded by the fact that he was at high school in the 1980's when school teacher's could get away with far more then they could now in terms of they way they treated students. Anyway, he went to law school as a mature age student and is now a successful lawyer. I'm sure there are many women who also fought their way through hard times to achieve success or recognition(like the lyrics say)but I really think that the "ethos" of this song applies human beings from all walks of life.
by Bob on 7/2/2008 3:57am
Come on,get real!!! The only women this song applies to are the ugly frumpy type. Average to attractive women don't have to "roar" at men or stand "toe to toe" with men to get what they want. They command power through their sexual appeal - that's how they get what they want in so far as men are concerned. I'm sorry but this is the reality....
by small kid on 7/2/2008 10:19pm
this song is the worst piece of shit i have ever heard i am woman bah! more like I AM STOOGE if you roar at a man he will laugh at you then walk away who would put embryo in a song
GOD!!
by F.T Sefali on 7/3/2008 5:28am
The song is revolutionary and burden with pain and deep-sitted anger I reckon
by Feminist on 7/3/2008 11:14pm
I think this song should be used as the forefront of another feminist movement. And I think all of the boys who call themselves "men" are only perpetuating the sexism that is occuring still today. I can't wait for all of the sexist pigs to disappear then maybe Women will show what we're made of.
by Master on 7/5/2008 7:38am
So you think that the song should be used as the "forefront" of another feminist movement do you. Well I think the song has about as much use and relevance as a discareded "foreskin"
by LIONESS on 7/30/2008 2:46pm
You all have to realize what it was like for women in 1972 when this song was released. We were finally feeling the joy ( hence the roar) of finally being treated as equals to men( toe to toe not one step behind ) . I think that all the comments that were made regarding the need to include men in this womens anthem are from people lucky enough to have grown up as in recent years as equals. We must never forget the struggles or else we may slide backwards! I am WOMAN hear me ROAR!!
by Lady on 7/30/2008 7:02pm
If we are stong etc we don't need to wait for all the boy/men to disapear. We can be powerful inspite of the pigs.
by warren james on 8/10/2008 7:59pm
This was the anthem for a Movement that in the midst of the Vetnam War agian a 'lberation' movement took the same name, and according to one (female) researcher(Prof Birkett) has rent the4 fabric of the nation. Funy thin is: Helen Reddy didnlt acknowledge a bloke wrote the song. How could she?
by Louisa on 8/20/2008 2:35am
Wow i love bob'd comment it is so true that we women who have looks can get what they want from men easily but still it is the recognition that women have to work harder for thier dollar and so forth that the song embodies I am woman in every way woot!!!!
by Jimny on 8/20/2008 7:46am
The best version of this song is on the Simpsons series 4 episode 14.
by Freedom Outlaw on 9/4/2008 11:26am
Look around you feminist women. It has been and always will be "a man's world". It is simply genetic that a man will be more aggressive than a woman.

Now this is obviously not good in a domestic situation but on a world stage and in a business deal, a man will have an advantage over a woman darn near everytime.

As a matter of fact, I cleaned a woman's clock on a business deal this week. She thought she was a cranial giant until I crushed her under my boot heel.

I think this is the song that unites women - together we can accomplish so much.
by KJ on 10/21/2008 4:00am
All the negative comments here above from the male side are obviously from men who are insecure and feel threatened by strong women with character and power who believe in equality. Maybe some day they will grow up.
by KimmyG on 10/24/2008 11:18pm
Excellent point, Chris! I am amazed that any woman can ever call herself pro-woman, yet advocate abortion because it makes her feel 'empowered'. It is a deceptive lie that has wrecked and destroyed many lives.

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to...
Mommy no! NO!!!! DONT LET
THEM DO THAT TO ME!!! Dont
you feel my toes and arms moving?
Im alive mommy, please, please give me a chance!
by Ian Smith on 11/3/2008 9:29pm
I actually do feel threatened by all average to attractive looking women - I think most men do in a strange sort of way. Its just he thought of that hidden power that they wield towards men, with me they could get me to do things that I would not contemplate in other circumstances. So, yeah, I think the song applies to ugly chicks only, it gives them something to sing about. Average to attractive women don't need a song to empower them, they are genetically empowered whether they like it ir not...
by Joker on 11/6/2008 10:43pm
Ha ha ha I just thought of something hilarious - the song sould not be called "I am Woman" it should be called "I am an Ugly Chick". Just imagine it, "I am an ugly chick, hear me roar, in numbers to big to ignore" etc etc..try singing the whole song this way, not only is it funny, it also strangely makes sense
by Male Chauvinist on 11/29/2008 4:04am
We should send all the feminists and homosexuals to be suicide bombers for western civilization. That way, when the war against terrorism comes to an end. We would have sped up human evolution toward traditional heterosexual gene pools.
by Flu-Bird on 11/29/2008 11:55pm
What men and women can do together is astonishing
by Kris on 12/10/2008 2:41pm
Wow, Male Chaudvinist! The ideas that you expressed are very relevant for human evolution! Great observation. In your future (or present), do me a little favor. Would you please tell your significant other that my best wishes go out to her, due to the fact that she may be sent into battle with a lesbian overseas?
by J.R. on 1/2/2009 4:19am
Love the song, but some of these comments are completely ridiculous. Maybe if some of you supposed "men" would learn to respect all people, maybe there wouldn't be powerful songs about liberation, such as this one, for you to criticize and denounce. It's idiots like you all that inspired the creation of this powerful Women's Liberation theme song. Maybe if you all acted like decent, respectful human beings, there would never be a need for another Feminist movement. As a male, I feel very much embarrassed by such rude behavior. Grow up, get lives, and stop being ass holes.

I'm surprised there is still such "a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand."
by Laura on 3/25/2009 11:33am
This song is oh so true! I was with my husband for over 8 yrs and not only financially supported him, but loved him so deep. He finally got a job a couple months ago and then left me. Right about the same time, my purse was stolen off my shoulder and I asked him for some money to help out and his wxact words were "I'm not going to support you"~~~~ Tough lesson to learn in life, huh> Feel like such a sucker.
by veroica (sgp high school student) on 3/27/2009 8:18am
I think that it is childish for men to get on here and well hate on this song. nobody asked for yall' opinions. Like they taught you in elementary "IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL."
by Robert J on 3/28/2009 5:05pm
dont forget the era it was written. it was very powerful for the time and if it still speaks topeople and brings out enough emotion to have all these messages 30 years later then its served its purpose.
by Katie on 4/5/2009 10:20pm
Ugh... I hate this song and the only reason I looked up the lyrics was to write a blog about how the Women's Liberation Movement is a complete joke. Why do we HAVE to prove to anyone what we are made of?? We know it and our husband and children see it. Why do these women feel the need to get outside applause and appreciation for doing what they were put on earth to do?? When was the last time any of them thanked their husband for working their rear ends off at a job they probably hate-- Just to support their whiney wives who cry because they aren't "happy". The Women's Lib Movement has de-masculated men and made women masculine. Blah
by Trish on 4/7/2009 9:33am
I think it's really interesting that some of the negative comments claim that the song talks of roaring "at men" or standing toe to toe "with men". Look at the actual song - it says nothing of the sort. It's about women enjoying their own sense of power and freedom to live their own lives and support each other -and hopefully bring their menfolk along with them. It's a song of love and liberty - that's all, and it's more than enough!
by Julie on 4/12/2009 4:40pm
Oh piss off Katie. Go bake some bread, lay out your husband's slippers and bring him a cocktail so he can relax after a long day at the office. Idiot.
by A Human Being on 4/27/2009 10:48pm
Whoa, whoa, whoa. THis song has nothing to do with gays, lesbians, abortion, female supremacy, or Hillary Clinton. It is a song that was written in the '70s about fighting for EQUAL treatement. Equal means no better and no worse. This song is about decency, equality, and respect. It is not anti-man or whatever you are thinking.
By the way, I am a smart, strong, educated woman who wants to be judged for my character, skills, ideas, and intelligence rather than my bust size. That doesn't mean I'm ugly; that just means I'm not a cut of meat.
by Susan on 5/4/2009 4:07pm
The comments on this page only prove that men can never change, they are brutish pigs, animals who don't know how to love. A world without men is a world without war.
by Kyle Fer on 5/22/2009 9:19am
This has got to be the most funniest congregation of comments about a song I have ever read in my life, haha I love this!
by Bob in Dallas on 5/27/2009 7:27am
As long as any group of humans is systematically oppressed, no one can be free. Thank goodness for women, who have suffered so much pain in every culture in every era since the dawn of humanity.
See the book entitled "A New View of Women's Liberation" by Osho, a practical manifesto for women to take over the world.

AS A SOLDIER I HAVE TO DEFEND YOUR RIGHT TO SPEAK YOUR MIND. AS AN AMERICAN I WILL SPEAK MINE.WOMEN ARE STRONG. LOOK AROUND AND SEE THOUSANDS RAISING CHILDREN, BY THEMSELVES, THEY LOVE BEYOND THEMSELVES MAKING SACRIFICES THAT MANY MEN WOULD THINK BENEATH THEM. IN MEEKNESS, THEY ARE THE VERY FOUNDATION OF THIS WORLD. AS YOU SPEAK OUT AGAINST THIS SONG THINK OF YOUR MOTHERS, SISTERS AND DAUGHTERS AND ALL THEY HAVE SUFFERED BECAUSE OF CALLUS MEN WHO FEEL THREATENED BY THE STRENGTH OF A WOMAN. JUST REMEMBER IT WAS A WOMAN WHO BROUGHT YOU INTO THIS WORLD. WE DO NOT FEEL WE MUST CONTROL OR DOMINATE YOU, BUT WITHOUT US WHERE WOULD YOU BE?

I'm a high school student and we had to study this song for english as it fell under our topic 'images and experiences of women'. I believe that it is a positive and uplifting song for women, as some women do struggle with self worth. I think everyone needs to take out all their political views on this song and just really listen to the lyrics and embrace them and what they may mean to women in other countries who don't have the freedom that we do.
by dawn on 8/26/2009 9:46pm
This is a really great song for all woman kind. Most definately highlights the struggles of women and gives hope and endurance to proceed with and into the future. Thank you, Helen Reddy and those Involved.

by justme on 9/26/2009 12:41am
this song is in on my mind. i have faced several male dominated problems in my life. i pitty, yet i am gald that there are men who do not understanding about this song. to me that means that however chavinistic (sp? sorry) they may be, they do no realize that there are are others out there who beat their wives/lovers/gfs and belittle them at the first opportunity. even in a secure relationship for over 22 years, the past can come back to haunt you.
by Lousy_David on 10/2/2009 12:45am
Ohh. Once you all die the youth can start over with equality.
Proof? Well it's rude to use one to represent all, however, Patricia explains that she is "Superior" to men.
Two things from this...
You're inferior to the entire human race if you're honestly saying you're better than man.
The song was written for equality...Which is what we call for. However you "old" people who lived through bad times can't get over your initia thoughts.
So let me finish THIS way.
People like Patricia need to either die, or learn a new trick.
I'm sure even at 43 your old decaying body can pick up a new ability.
Wht am I talking about?
Thinking.
by lemon on 10/6/2009 8:53pm
goodness people. let the song be what is to yourself and let the song be what it is to others. i don't necessarily agree with some of the comments here but i won't trash them either. i am women, yes, i will let myself be heard...don't worry so much about the literal meaning and structure of the song, instead focus on the symbology and metaphorical aspect that can apply to anyone.
by Henry on 10/18/2009 3:57pm

by Lady Lux on 10/30/2009 7:11am
Um....to all you males, just letting you know that I could not care less about this song. I don't even know the words. What I do know is that I'm now 44 years old and I've exploited your pathetic and transperant vulnerabilities (namely "unquenchable sexual desire)for the best part of 25 years and I'm now in charge of several thousand of you as a Commissioner of Police........and I've only ever slept with one man who happens to be my husband. I often laugh at the amount of you idiots that have masturbated to my image over the decades......so as I head towards retirement and my image trancends from that of an illusionary assistant to the most important thing in your lives namely, ejeculation, into an undesirable middle age women, I say to you all, sincerely, thank you........suckers!

My local gym has a physiotherapist that adjoins it with internal access. Last week I saw the physio himself walk through the gym towards his rooms when a mad in his fifties attempted to stop him and ask him for advice. The physio politely pointed in the direction of his office and made reference to his consultation fee before walking off. Yesterday I saw a girl of about 32, average looks, a B+ at best, ask a similar question of the physio. I watched curioulsy as he spent about 15 minutes with her intensly explaining how to properly use a particular piece of equipment and the effect it had on certain muscles. No formal consultaion or fee was ever mentioned. The moral of the story - most of you girls don't need to waste your time singing stupid songs and 'roaring' - if I was the physio I would have done exactly the same thing - who needs brains when you've got power like that
by kphoo on 12/31/2009 2:06pm
patricia- it is not about being superior, it is about being equal- the national organization of woman does not want to be superior only equal- women are not objects to be controlled, they are equal- superior is a big misunderstanding
by Terry on 1/12/2010 10:25pm
I am grateful I am married to a man who respects a woman who is strong and capable, just as I respect him for being so. For the ice age men who do not get the song because they are too le=iteral; it's about women's history, how men and women have changed nd grown.
by STELLA on 3/8/2010 5:34pm
This song was my security blanket when i was being battered and abused it helped me to survive way back in the 70's, at 58 i can look back and see how far i have come and feel proud i will always be grateful for it.Please before you write anything abusive remember many women suffered then and some still do

Don't forget that this song was written in the 1970's. Different times. It was chosen by the UN to be the theme song for International Women's Year in 1975. A great song from a time when women didn't have equal pay & equal career opportunities.
by Common SENSE on 4/25/2010 1:16pm
Many of the people that are disagreeing with this song are either really stupid or confused. You don't understand that today, even though it's not socially acceptable to act as though women are inferior, it is still happening in subtle ways. Women are still being held down by people because in this male dominated world, a strong woman is not attractive. And it's not that women have to prove themselves to anyone, they are simply fighting for their right to be themselves and, when they are themselves, not to be shunned for it. I also agree that Chris, and who ever else was talking about birth control negatively, needs to get a life. You don't know what your taking about. You don't know what it's like to have the burden of a child and you never will.

by Lauren on 5/14/2010 1:33pm
One love. The message of most liberation and equality songs. One love for all human kind: woman, man, gay, straight, black, white, christian, Jewish... One love for everyone. If everyone would just love all humans equally the problems of the world will vanish. Past generations have grown up with such prejudice, persecusion, and hate that you can't look past it. There are men who still believe women are beneath them and women that will always have a secret grudge against men for the years of sexism so until those feelings are gone we will never be an equal world. That probably won't happen for a few generation. Not until you all are too old to waste your energy to argue and the future of the world is taught to love instead of hate. Until then... Might as well keep your hateful opinions to yourself because you are poison.
by Steve J on 5/15/2010 10:25am
Wow I just read through all the comments here, really interesting. I then checked out other stuff about the song and saw some photo's of Helen when the song was released in the early 70's. What a good looking woman!!! And slim to, looked great in her jeans!! I have not had a chance to really listen to the song or read the lyrics so I can't really comment on what it's about.

Your comments and views depend on what generation you were in and whether you are male or female. Hey to you free males out there, women had to work hard for what some people today take for granted. It was not only about women's lib it was about changing society, so women could work and raise a family. Men had to learn to do more than remote (although we did not have those yet )help raise their families that they hekped create (which men back then did not do) and for a women to expect herself to be more. Men who that expect their wives or girlfriends to get their beers from the frig are better left single.

I was just going through the sports channels and I came across a bunch of women once again imposing on men's territory - they were playing football! Now normally I would laugh to myself and shake my head in bemusement. But not this time. These chicks were playing in their underwear and the game come under the title of Lingerie League. I actually watched the whole match with great interest, even to the extent to ignoring the premium men's game. All you ladies who want to act like men and be taken seriously take note. Do it in your underwear (or topless or even nude) otherwise continue being secretly regarded as a joke. Hat's off to the Lingerie League girls - you are all legends!

by Angel on 6/22/2010 1:44am
If you think back to the time period this song was created, it was meant to be a "positive" womens right movement song. There is no debate here, men or women. Women....need to be strong..yet in these days we also need to be proud of who we are. If women want to be respected....first we must have respect for ourselves. Helen Reddy is crystal clear about where we came from and where we needed to go, the accomplishments we could make. Women of the world..."some" of us are missing the point "respect oneself" and others will respect you too.

It's only when we are really down on the floor that we are in the perfect position to pray. And it is when we pray that we look within and realize how strong we women have been made. We can then do and face everything that we have been fatally fearful of. Everything we thought would really kill us inside, makes us only stronger. This song is not a feminist song, it is about celebrating the difference between men and women. Men are tough, hardly cry, macho - but when it comes to facing things - its really easy for them to lie out of cowardice, hide, avoid and run. On the other hand, women are sensitive, fearful, emotional - but it is this sensitivity and emotional depth that gives them the courage to the right things in the face of challenge and pain.

The only damage Robert Mosby, has been to the insecure men who preferr to dominate women so they can feel superior. Is this you Robert Mosby? If so, you are the sad one here, well, along with the few dozen other insecure men speaking against this song & women in general.
by tjk1959 on 7/28/2010 5:21am
Totally disagree with some of you women out there. You are the dominant ones that make men want to seek other avenues. Like other men or other women.
There is nothing wrong with this song. It's freedom of speach and it speaks out for women who have been sheltered and speachless for years until this song came out and spoke for every woman out there to let them know they are strong and can do anything. And they can just as well if not better than a man!
They are woman!

From a man

this song tells me something personally that woman and men are not superior to eachother but equal. What this song is asking for is equality and sexist men should listen to it and treat woman equal.

Harry just what are you saying - are you saying that you would only take a female Doctor, Judge, Accountant or any other type of female professional seriously if they performed their jobs while in their underwear! Is that what you are saying?
by IAMWOMYN on 9/3/2010 6:12pm
love this song. As a feminist in my 20s, this song reminds me of the older generation of feminists and the fight they fought. Some of these comments are enrageing! However, the mere fact that men are so riled over this song 40 years later proves it's potency. By the way, gentlemen, I am considered "attractive," but do not, and will not, EVER let that determine my self-worth. If you are so weak as to be wooed by beauty, all the better for us, then. Shame on you for perpetuating the myth that "feminism is for ugly women." Pathetic.
by Harry on 9/5/2010 7:24am
Jennifer I did post a reply to your question but for some reason whoever controls things does not seem to want you to read it. Perhaps they're scared that it's too close to the truth. Pathetic

Dear IAMWOMYN - who cares what you think about your self worth! If you say your attractive I say well you must be good for at least one thing, therefore you would rate on my assessment of your self worth, that's all that matters. And being wooed by your beauty is not a sign of my weakness, it's simply a symtom of my genetic design...

Learn the proper usage of "your" as opposed to "you're" before posting. Also, calm down, dude. I wouldn't give you the time of day, pig.

Helen was wise beyond her years. She has created a song that has gone down in history for a good reason. WE NEEDED IT!
It is now in history books and the words will last for future generations!! So, if the "Brother's" still need to understand" start educating yourselves.
by Christtian on 10/16/2010 8:34am
I can't believe what I have just read, shame on you IAMWOMAN and Steve J for your bitterness and negativity. Acrimonious comments like these are of no assistance to whatever agenda's you are each trying to promote. Why don't you both forget about being vitriolic, start again and offer something sensible in support of your whatever you're trying to say. Either that, or don't say anything at all.
by BringIt on 12/16/2010 5:49pm
this song is not about the power women seek to gain over men, it is about women gaining power over themselves and their own lives in a society where women were mothers, wives and daughters, without their own voice in many aspects, with expectations to perform in particular roles and not move outside of these. Men also have these issues, just in different areas. Women are just fortunate enough to have had a song such as this to help empower them.
this song inspires me to be the best i can, not trash men.
It inspires me to teach my son and daughters to be the best they can.
It reminds me that when I feel alone, i am not. I am strong, I am invincible. I am woman.
And being a woman is a bloody good thing. Because frankly, to all the obscene boys above, most men wouldn't suck your cock.
by Jarrod on 12/18/2010 3:35am

I am amazed to read all the comments from everyone, stating the same things that were stated nearly 40 years ago. The more things change, the more they stay the same. If anyone wondered how to battle for women's freedom and liberty was going, they need to only read all the comments here. Amazing.

This song is about to help me recover from what feels like 8 years of bliss turned into 6 months of HELL. Going through a divorce, my mom passing and still having to hold it together for my children. I realized, yes I can do anything I AM WOMAN!!! I can push out a baby, fix dinner, be the accountant, the teacher, the maid, the bedroom please, have a great career and go to school at the same time. Fuck you little dick men and learn a woman can do anything so don't fuck with us. And yes, I still love a "strong" man. As I gracefully bow out for now, I say take this song for what it is and stop bitching!
by R. on 3/8/2011 1:08pm
WOW Some comments are beyond STUPIDITY & IGNORANCE!!!

Women make the world go round!!!

Think about it you stupid men! who raised you? feed you? gave you a kiss when you were scared of monsters in the darkness of your room??? A WOMAN!!!
WITHOUT THIS WOMAN YOU WOULDN'T BE THE MEN YOU ARE!!!

This song as nothing to do with abortion or homosexuality, or ugly woman..

This is a song about self confidence... and EGALITY!

But i guess men are such pussies that they are afraid of what a woman can do if she has confidence and feel great about herself whatever the life she has chosen, to be successful in her job or raising her child...

DON'T MESS WITH WOMEN CAUSE THEY GONNA MAKE YOU REGRET IT AT SOME POINT!!! lol
by Sarah on 3/9/2011 11:06pm
Reading these comments makes me want to chuck a hammer at some of your guy's heads! Honestly, this is a song about EQUAL rights, women learning to have faith in their self and stand up. This is not about abortion, politics, ugly girls, or anything else you try and warp it in to! Keep in mind the time that this was written, please! I can't even believe that some people would be so against this amazing song, R. is right!!

I'm a beautiful educated heterosexual woman. I recently heard this song on the radio and decided to check out the lyrics. I like it.. just as I do Maya Angelou's Phenomenal Woman..regardless of the era in which I was born (I'm 29), I can appreciate the struggles others endured and though I haven't personally experienced much ( pretty much had everything I need- from a middle class family), I can empathsize with others.. so I am WOMAN hear me ROAR- or freely express myself without fear ...or CLOSE YOUR DAMN EARS!! It's a choice.
by Iska on 3/10/2011 9:47am
Great song. Your all nuts, If women want equality they have to accept that there is more to it than crying on a girlfriends shoulder when things don't go there way, stand up accept responsibility for you failures as well as your achievements. I love my woman when she can do, think or finish something without asking for a hand or a hand out Start here and I welcome you to equality, I look forward to you taking my job so I can stay home with the kids

You girls and your "equality" rubbish make me laugh. The time, effort and expense behind your silly causes and movements has led to some useless advances such as "chairman" now being "chairperson" and others like mandatory appointments of women to high level Government jobs (despite their actual ability) which are significant but not necessarily helpful. However, it's all so ARTIFICIAL. I mean, you will never achieve GENUINE equality because you're beaten by insurmountable biologocal factors which secure the DOMINANCE of men. Perhaps I should spell it out. Men are physically stronger, men are not subject to menstruation......the list goes on. But you know what says it all....it's the missionary position, the way we were biologically designed to make love. It says it all. Men are just the dominant species....deal with it.

This song was written in a particular time when to be a woman meant your career choices were limited by your gender, you were paid less for doing the same job as a man, and traditional female jobs like nursing and childcare were very poorly paid. I have seen history turned around in sixty short years...and remember when history is written, it is told by those in control i.e. HIStory. I am no raving bra-burning feminazi, just a married mother of four.

I feel bad for the inconsiderate commentators who are sexist, prejudice, and morally blind. They cannot get past the fact that Helen wrote a song that they can barely begin to understand. This song makes me feel empowered and proud of my side of the species. These words will continue to inspire and passed on throughout the years. By the way Jake, your way wrong and I would like to know what you are doing with your life because you are obviously not bettering yourself. And you wouldn't be alive without menstruation, so if you're going to say some thing, at least get the facts straight.

In conclusion, you just got your ass kicked by a fourteen year old girl.

Great song describing a non-thing. Interesting that wymyn decided to "fight" for "equality" after men created the modern world and all its convenience and niceties. And even then they cold not achieve very much of significants so they started whining for affirmative action. And even when given affirmative action they are still to lazy to commit the time needed to studying to become an engineer, scientist, mathematician, etc.
by WTF on 5/12/2011 1:12pm
If you want to get more realistic and accurate depiction of women and why they maintained a low station in life than men throughout history just go the 3rd world. Ask the women there, "do you want to have opportunity to do the same work as the men?". They will always say "No!". Throughout history women did not want to the demanding, hard, and dangerous work performed by men. Women much preferred to do women's work. It was safer and easier. A third world woman would want nothing to do with a man that expected her "equal" work. A man that thought a woman should be treated equally would find himself without a mate.
by georgia on 6/10/2011 3:19am
I'm using this song for a lyric analysis for a university essay so have read through all of the above comments to find some valuable quotations. Much of what I read is absolutely disgusting! No, I'm not a feminist myself, but if this is really what many men think of women, I really hope I never meet any of you.

I come from the era when this song was born - Thank-you, Helen for bringing it out. This week after leaving vacation early because of how I was being treated, once again - This song came back to my mind to keep me company. I printed out the powerful words and sang it - just for me, my house, my dog and I feel better.

I agree, I need to teach it to my daughters.

Even today 41 years later many men have not changed. They still think they are the dominant one in the world. Many women have changed the face of the world with their strength and patience and love. Some men will ALWAYS feel threatened. They can not accept that a woman will ever be as good as they are. That is a shame because as others have said they came from a womans seed and without that seed they would not be here. Be strong women. One day All men will know the power of a woman and rejoice in it as lots do. Some men and women love each other because they are strong.. So says a 56 year old lady brought up in the 60's...
by emaree on 9/24/2011 5:41pm
@WTF you need to only speak about what you know or you will sound like an idiot. I am a woman from a third world country and I don't recognize myself in your comments. Women in 3rd world countries have always worked as hard as men. Nowadays in my country women are more educated than men. They outperform men in high schools and universities. We are doctors, lawyers, scientists and do all the hard work. So hear us ROAR in numbers too big to ignore..
by Shocked on 10/5/2011 8:07am
I must say some of these comments totally shocked me. I was blindly under the impression that we live in an equal society. I guess now I know it only seems equal to some. All you men who think you are better than wome, where would you be without them? And all you women who think you are betteer than men, where would you be without them? There is a reason God made us so that it takes man AND woman to reproduce. Woman is from mans rib to stand beside him, not from his chest to be in front or from his foot to be walked or or his head to be superior or even his ass the be behind. HIS SIDE!
by Really? on 10/22/2011 6:16pm
while everyone is going hippy about feminism, you dont hear stories of women whose lives have shattered by the lies of this movement. 'oh you can do everything. you can sleep around, have an abortion, throw your children into day care and let them fend for themselves while you go into a man's world'
women are given the gift of bearing children. it is a God given gift not a right. women are meant to stand by their man and be his number one cheerleader.
look at all those kids without a father figure. what do they turn out to be????? druggies.
this world is just full of lies and corruption and I pray people's eyes will be open.
by the way, i am a woman as well, not a man.

When this song was written, women were paid about 59cents for every dollar men made. We weren't allowed in many professions - such as electrical engineering as an example. There were no spousal abuse laws, nor stalking and terrorist threats. It was okay to beat your wife. (When I've been down there on the floor). Women were steered into the nursing, secretarial and teaching professions. We had to be ten times as good as a man to get half as far.

We still have a long way to go to level the playing field. My granddaughter is reading my copy of "Sisterhood is Powerful"
