Clair
The moment I met you, I swear.
I felt as if something, somewhere,
Had happened to me, which I couldn't see.
And then, the moment I met you, again.
I knew in my heart that we were friends.
It had to be so, it couldn't be no.
But try as hard as I might do, I don't know why.
You get to me in a way I can't describe.
Words mean so little when you look up and smile.
I don't care what people say, to me you're more than a child.
Oh Clair. Clair ...
Clair
If ever a moment so rare
Was captured for all to compare.
That moment is you in all that you do.
But why in spite of our age difference do I cry.
Each time I leave you I feel I could die.
Nothing means more to me than hearing you say,
"I'm going to marry you. Will you marry me? Oh hurray!"
Oh Clair Clair ...
Clair
I've told you before "Don't you dare!"
"Get back into bed."
"Can't you see that it's late."
"No you can't have a drink."
"Oh allright then, but wait just a minute."
While I, in an effort to babysit, catch up on my breath,
What there is left of it.
You can be murder at this hour of the day.
But in the morning the sun will see my lifetime away.
Oh Clair Clair ...
Oh Clair

Comments/Interpretations
I used to enjoy this song back in the 70's but after I read the lyrics I've begun to wonder a little about Gilbert O'Sullivan's meaning of this song.was he a ? Nah couldn't be
The song was written about Clair Mills, the 3 yr. old daughter of the Gilber O'Sullivan's manager at the time. He would babysit her on occasion and was enamored by her. He wrote it with the parent's consent and there is no hidden meanings in the lyrics. It's a simple song about a litte girl.
It's not 'Oh Hurray' in the 2nd verse...it's 'Uncle Ray'. Gilbert's real name is Raymond Edward O'Sullivan; he used to babsit his manager's little girls named Claire.
[correction] "... but in the morning, this hour will seem a lifetime away ...'
I remember hearing this when it was released originally. I was still at junior school but loved any type of ballad and still do. This song has stayed with me for decades and although I'm an elvis purist I appreciate good lyrics especially those you can understand. Why are people trying to make out that there was a hidden agenda. So sad that its come to that. I think back to 72 and wish I was there again. Total innocence.Love it
this song was played to me as a child (as my name is claire) and my babysitter used to sing it to me when i couldn't sleep
looking at these words decades later, they don't pass the smell test. The lines, ....to me you're more than a child......and the marry me stuff.....something doesn't feel right and the guy would be investigated today, together with the parents.

Oops on the final line. Should be "But in the morning this hour will seem a lifetime away."+
I remember hearing this song... for years i could not remember the name.. i love it... i wonder what ever happened to Clair?
I just pulled the video up. I have never seen it before. It is so cute! I still love that song.
She's just 16 years old, leave her alone, they said
There's nothing to the song I grew up with my mom playing this song in the house .... The difference between then and now , you sing a song like this to a 3yr old and it was really cut! Nothing weird about of it ... Those were the DAYS . If I had a time machine I'd wana go back there 72
End of verse 2, not "oh hurray" but "Uncle Ray" which was the real Clair's nickname for Gilbert O'Sullivan
End of verse 2, not "oh hurray" but "Uncle Ray" which was the real Clair's nickname for Gilbert O'Sullivan. End of verse 3 "wait just a bit" (to rhyme with babysit) not "just a minute". Final line should be "this hour will seem a lifetime away"
