I sang this song at karaoke one night in Steamboat Springs, CO and the crowd went nuts dancing and singing along. It was surprisingly a very young crowd too. This song has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Wish they'd all cooperate and get the full band back together... and tour!! Too much ego trippin' for ELO right now, unfortunately. the song is about a soccer player called trevor francis who played for the authors local soccer team, Birmingham City also known as Blues because of kit they wear. Francis was there best player hence the Mr Blue. He then joined Nottingham Forest hence the lyric Mr Night which refers to Brian Clough who was Forests head coach. And the hand on the shoulder is the photo of Clough with francis at the press conference on the day he moved clubs. Its a song about a soccer player and the good memories and times he gave the team nothing more. Not homosexuality, not jesus or religion not heaven not this and not fucking that. Just a footballer. I saw ELO at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney in the 80s. They were sensational then, and they are just as good now. They had four coloured lasers symbolising violin strings going high up into the sky, and each one vibrated as Mick Kaminski played his solos. Top shelf. ELO featured on tonight's repeat of Dr Who (David Tennant), and I thought Dr Who couldn't get any better. Great choice of music.

I can't believe this song only made it to #35 in the US. It is a brilliant piece of songwriting by the great Mr. Lynne. Maybe it's because of the quirky arrangement. Plus the vocal style doesn't quite seem to fit. Nonetheless, it's one of the greatest upbeat, feel-good songs of all time.
