Oh My Papa Lyrics
Artist: Eddie Fisher
OH, MY PA-PA
Eddie Fisher
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my pa-pa, he always understood.
Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter
Oh, my pa-pa, so funny, so adorable
Always the clown so funny in his way
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.

I remember this song from my childhood days. My Dad was a strict disciplinarian, having served in the army, yet he loved me more than himself. Later, that love got transferred to my children. The trouble is that I found it difficult to express my love for him when he was living, but the day he passed away, on 4th July 1982, it all came surging back and I mourned for him actively for 11 years after that. I still miss him dearly, think of him almost everyday and my earnest desire is to hug him and tell him how much I love him. I am 65 years old, I dream of him often and am waiting for the day when I shall meet him again. This song will always be dear to me.
I also remember Jim Nabors singing "Oh My Papa" on the Gomer Pyle USMC. I cried then and I still tear up a little whenever I hear it performed. Can't get through the lyrics myself without getting choked up... AND my father is still alive!

I remembering hearing this song when I was about 13. My favorite cousin, Judy, and I were at a cousin's house and she had lost her father (he had a heart attack). She broke out crying and we cried together. I just returned to Calif. on vacation, and visited the older cousin who lived in the old farm house where Judy and I listened to "Oh, My Papa." Judy passed away a few years ago and I miss her so very much. My own father passed away in 2002. How odd it seems that I was just with my older cousin, Eddie, age 82, and right after that, I learned that Eddie Fisher just passed away and he made "Oh, My Papa" so popular. I have been recalling Judy and I listening to that song so long ago and crying together because she had lost her "papa". What a beautifil song it is and still makes me cry! Judy would have been 65 yesterday on Sept. 26, 2010. My "papa" would have been 91 last month. I think of him and miss him everyday! This song will live on forever in honor of our dear Fathers.
I am saddened to hear Eddie Fisher died last week. I was about 13 when I first heard his song "Oh, My Papa" in a cousin's old farm house. Another cousin, Judy, was with me and her father had died of a heart attack. She was 11 weeks older than me. We listened to the song and cried together. I have never forgotten that day and now Judy and my father have both passed away and I miss them so much. This is a wonderful song that will live on forever! Thank you, Eddie Fisher!
My father died in 1981 and this song will always be his but.....it was Mr. Ed who sang it to me the first time as a child - for those of you too young to remember, Mr. Ed was a horse of course ;)
My father died on 10/10/10 and this was one of his favourite songs that he used to sing to my sisters and I when we were children. It was also sung at his funeral. This is a wonderful song and whenever I hear it I will always remember my father.
I only had my father for 26 years of my life. He died in 1965. I used to sing this song to him all the time. I cannot sing it even now without crying.
This song was played by Crawford Bell at the annual deceased dockers mass in belfast in November 2010 and it brought many grown men and women in the congregation to tears
My father died in March 2010. We had grown distant over the years and then he was gone. This was 1 of the songs he used to sing to me when I was a kid and I wish he was still around to sing it once again...
Our father passed away last week. My brothers, sisters and I used to listen to this song in the 60s in Vietnam. It will be played at our father's funeral. Dad, we all loved you and missed you dearly. This is a wonderful song and will live on forever.
In 1952 my dear Italian Grandfather died, I was four years old. I remember it so clearly. It was like the scene in the Godfather where Brando was playing with his grandson in the garden. My Grandfather had a little Italian bar and restaurant and after he passed away all the patrons came in and played,"Oh My Pa Pa on the juke box. It made my Father so sad, now my Father is being cared for by hospice and is just days away. My thoughts go back to that wonderful song and how meangingful it is to me right now
I sang this song in the school play solo at the age of six in 1954 to an audience of several hundred people. The play was on Father's day that year and it was entirely appropriate. My father died 31 years ago and this song continues to have special meaning for me.
my dad passed 15 years ago when i was a kid. My mother had done job and made us able to stand by ourselves. I used to think myself to be grown up, however, today i miss my father a lot probably more than anyone else in this world. I really love my PaPa. HAd he been there I would have been on top of tis world today and have made him proud, where I am today. I miss my dad.
This song was from my childhood, I wish I had played it at my Papa's funeral.....

He died just beforE my 18th birthday. When I was 28 I became a christian I found Jesus through reading the new testament and asking him to forgive me os all my sins and to come into my life. I was just a small boy when I first heard this song. I felt the song so touching and so sentimental. Though the song is really great and quite moving, I never sang it in the pass even I wanted to. Yesterday, my father passed away. Being in a place far from home and thinking of how wonderful a father he was, it came to me naturally singing this song. How emotional it was. From now on I will be singing this song whenever I remember my father and days gone by.. My he rest in peace with the Lord.
I remember my Dad singing this song when I was 4 or 5 & saw tears in his eyes thinking about his own Dad.
I had this song stuck in my head for a very long time Oh my papa didn't really know it was a song until one of my coworkers told me when she heard me singing oh my papa, was a song and she sang some lyrics to it. I must of heard it when I was younger.

This was my fathers favourite song,he was very musical and would play it often. He was a father with 6 kids and had so much love for us all including mum.But he passed away at the young age of 61,I think of him every day.Christmas he would play his piano accordian, and we would all sing christmas carols,i so miss all the joy he brought to our home,i love and miss you very much, may god bless you and all the other loving fathers of this world.
When I was a young boy, this was one of the songs my mother and I heard on the radio often enough, listened to it, and even sang it together. My own father, alas!, never reflected the meaning of the lyrics to me, although my mom's father, who had passed away in Greece, did for her. She often spoke of her dad as a wise, loving, self-sacrificing, well-respected man. Now, for some reason, the song came back to my attention, and it occurs to me that for my very own purposes I could change the words to apply to my Mama instead, although "Goodnight, Irene" has, for me, always been her song. It is sad that my father mistreated both her and me, but it is wonderful that these lyrics do apply to my mama and did apply to my gramps, her papa!
Miss you Dad - now I'm the papa! Hope I'm half the dad you were xx
This is the first fathers day w/o Len Hawley singing this song, Now it's up to me to sing it.
I remember Oh Mein Papa being my mother's favorite song. I never knew the English version because our 78 record was in German. I just knew what the title meant and that I loved the song. I was absoutely thrilled the day she handed the record down to me. I was about 11years old. I used to play it over again and again. One day the record cracked. Grsting her rsth was terrified to tell her
So memorable were the days when my papa was still around....Oh My Papa indeed.
My Dad. My hero. I'll never stop missing you and your gentleness.
Such beautiful comments by all... my Dad is still alive... the song makes me spend more time with him...
Dear dad u r always in my heart
Such lovely and sad comments. I haven’t heard this song in decades: my parents used to play it in the early 60’s. I’m 70 and my parents are both dead. And I had ups and downs with them too, but miss them. My husband died last year and now our children miss him most deeply. I don’t think they could bear this little song just yet.How wonderful will that day be when death is finally abolished.
I would love to think that my daughters might want this played for me at my funeral. I'm old now and they have lives of their own, but to me they are forever my two be-loved little girls and I will love them forever.
