Surrender Lyrics

Artist: Dropkick Murphys
Album: The Meanest Of Times

I was at my weakest state
And you kept pushing me on
You gave me something to believe in
And it keeps me standing strong
These lessons that I've learned
These things I'll carry on
And when you're gone I'll honor you
Each day, however long

This glimmer of hope was never enough
To guide me through the darkness like a diamond
In the rough
I held out for and I received
A pain that never left with no reprieve
Like a toast at a table where resentments run free
There can't be any truth where there's no honesty

Like an apple from the tree
you were lock jawed in your ways
A reminder of myself in those long forgotten days
Thought you'd stayed off my path
But I just couldn't see that the blood that's in your veins
Is the same that runs through me

This glimmer of hope was never enough
To guide me through the darkness like a diamond
In the rough
I held out for and I received
A pain that never left with no reprieve
Like a toast at a table where resentments run free
There can't be any truth where there's no honesty

I had it all but lost my faith
And then you lead me to it
Today I'll carry on
I had it all but lost my faith
And now I've renewed it
These things I'll carry on

woah. the lyrics seem like a praise song. i wonder if it was written to a person or to God. interesting.
by Bjorn on 10/15/2008 3:48pm
More likely, this is written to a family member ("like an apple from the tree") than to God. ("When you're gone I'll honor you)

There can't be any truth where there's no honesty!
by Doyle on 6/30/2009 9:42pm
I disagree,
I think it is about an old lover who hurt him very deeply
by JP on 7/28/2009 1:05pm
I agree with Doyle.
by Trent on 8/4/2009 2:50pm
I think its about a family member because of his phrase "I just couldn't see that the blood in your veins is the same that runs through me"
by Kool on 8/23/2009 8:18am
i think it's about his father, dunno
by dank muffins on 11/2/2009 12:10am
i think it's a kickass song and i love it
by Bryan on 1/25/2010 3:44am
I'm not sure about Trent's point, i think that part means that we're all human and no one deserves treatment like he received. Which backs up Doyle's point.

Im sure the song has spiritaul applicable context as anything touching in life usaully does, but its definitely being directed to a person. How in some way that person had them find their faith again.

ifu look at the cd cover case there is an in memory of tom casey i think that could be ken caseys grandfather so this song i think is an ode to tom casey
by Joe Smith on 10/26/2010 11:24am
Personally, I think it's about a man who led a hard life until he met someone who, in the short time they were together, changed it for the better.
by wes on 11/23/2010 12:10am
it sounds like it has something to do with an addiction
by SGRCK on 4/27/2011 11:47pm
"the blood that's in your veins
Is the same that runs through me". So obviously it can't be written to someone else than a family member
by archie on 7/8/2011 5:11pm
i think Kool is right, sounds like a song about someones father
by edd9 on 7/29/2011 6:40am
Это очень искренняя песня, в ней слышится подлинная благодарность человека, которому вернули веру в себя. Я очень люблю эту песню.
by edd9 on 7/29/2011 6:41am
This is a very sincere song, it can be heard a genuine thanks to person who returned the self-confidence. I love this song.

|A reminder of myself in those long forgotten days.

Someone who was in his life as a youth?

|Thought you'd stayed off my path.

Someone who was in the position to follow in his footsteps.

|But I just couldn't see that the blood that's in your veins
Is the same that runs through me

Relation or close friend? Not necessarily literal blood, but attitude, or spirit? I want to say it's a younger sibling.

doyles probs right, old lover but its not just another sad song about being left, its more than a whiny 'you left me song'
by Rayne on 10/31/2011 12:10am
The song is about himself...
by conner on 8/3/2012 12:57am
It's about his child. More likely a son, because not many daughters follow their fathers footsteps. (Thought you'd stay off my path, but i couldn't see that the blood in your veins is the same that runs through me.)
by Dave on 8/26/2012 2:53pm
My interpretation is that it's about fathers and sons and how the cycle repeats. 1st verse is about his father. 2nd verse is about his son. In both cases the strained relationships came around and faith was restored. This is an awesome song.
by Hughes on 10/2/2012 3:45pm
it's a son and father speaking.

The first verse is the son to the father (I was at my weakest state
And you kept pushing me on
You gave me something to believe in
And it keeps me standing strong
These lessons that I've learned
These things I'll carry on
And when you're gone I'll honor you
Each day, however long),
The second verse is the father to the son (Like an apple from the tree
you were lock jawed in your ways
A reminder of myself in those long forgotten days
Thought you'd stayed off my path
But I just couldn't see that the blood that's in your veins
Is the same that runs through me).

The Third verse is still the son (I had it all but lost my faith
And then you lead me to it
Today I'll carry on
I had it all but lost my faith
And now I've renewed it
These things I'll carry on).

Cheers!

great song full of power
by Corey on 10/22/2013 1:15am
I'm certain this is a song about a younger brother/sibling, at least that's how it appears to me.

"many traits ans characteristics often seem to run in the family and they aren't always pretty"
This is what they say on the cd the meanest of times, so I'm pretty sure that it's about family.
by Johnnny on 4/29/2014 6:22am
I think its about family
