What If I Stumble Lyrics

Artist: DC Talk
Album: Intermission

"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today
Is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips
Then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

Is this one for the people? Is this one for the Lord?
Or do I simply serenade for things I must afford?
You can jumble them together, my conflict still remains
Holiness is calling, in the midst of courting fame
Cause I see the trust in their eyes
Though the sky is falling
They need Your love in their lives
Compromise is calling

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You never turn in the heat of it all
What if I stumble, what if I fall?

Father please forgive me for I can not compose
The fear that lives within me
Or the rate at which it grows
If struggle has a purpose on the narrow road you've carved
Why do I dread my trespasses will leave a deadly scar
Do they see the fear in my eyes? Are they so revealing?
This time I cannot disguise all the doubt I'm feeling

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

What if I stumble?
Everyone's got to crawl when you know that
You're up against a wall, it's about to fall
Everyone's got to crawl when you know that

I hear You whispering my name [You say]
"My love for You will never change" [never change]

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You never turn in the heat of it all
What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You are my comfort, and my God

Is this one for the people, is this one for the Lord?

is this one for the people, is this one for the lord or do I simply serenade for things I must afford (Am I writing this song for glory in the eyes of the people or am I writing it about what I believe [not knowing implied], or do I simply do this to pay the bills)

You can jumble them together, my conflict still remains
Holiness is calling, in the midst of courting fame (You can say that I am doing all those things at once, but I am still conflicted, The Lord is calling me while I'm in the middle of promoting myself to men)
by Amanda on 6/17/2008 7:13pm
The sad thing is, it's all true...I love this song, it's my heart poured out in words.

I did stumble, as a pastor, I caved in. I was serenading for the things I must afford, when I gave in to lust. After a six year healing process, I am finally seeking to reenter vocational ministry. Praise The Lord for his forgiveness

We must all realize that we do stumble and we do fall... The Father in his infinate wisdom picks us up and wipes off the dirt from our scraped knees and gently tells us.... "get up soldier, there is no time for rest, must move on to the goal, I AM RIGHT BESIDE YOU ALL THE WAY"
What an awesome God we Serve. Thanks Toby, Michael and Kmax for doing everything you do for the Lord. May He always shower you with His untainted love.

These lyrics put me im my place...I call myself a Christian but I didn't realize how distant and cold I have become. This has made my heart melt and opened my eyes..I don't want people to wonder whether im a Christian or have to ask me, I want them to know it and feel it with the way I lead my life...I can't do this alone...
by alex malonda on 11/26/2008 3:34am

Even though im young (13) some how this song really touches my heart. Even so young i have made some pretty big mistakes in my life. This song really helps when you feel guilty or sad over something the line "what if i stumble what if i fall, you never turn away in the heat of it all" is really comforting to know that God will always be there to help no matter how bad we sin.
GOD BLESS YOU
by Lynette on 12/19/2008 4:52pm
My sentiments exactly...people can point their boney fingers at us to shame us. God, however, redeems us and says: "I loved you first, now go and sin no more. I will forgive...trust in me; keep trying". This song really touches my heart, also. God bless.

Does anyone know who said "The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today
Is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips
Then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

It is so very true and I'd love to have the referance to this statement for a presentation.

Thanks!

for almost a month now, i've been obsessing whether i'm being a good witness for Christ or not. i'm so so afraid of stumbling, knowing this will reflect on other Christians. Also, Im afraid that if I sin, God will love me less. Thanks to this song, I'm reminded that He will always love us. Like Lynette said, He loved us first; even before we repented, he loved us.
by Mao on 2/19/2009 1:40pm
I would also like to know who said that first statement!!

this so true. my brother is the president of our christian progam at my school and one day this group of girls walked by our christian meeting and me and josh(my brother) asked if the would like to join and their exact words was "why go in there when all they do is act like hypocrates" sorry if i spelled that wrong well i love this song and it helps me in all i do.
by DanBillion on 3/10/2009 7:29am
As a former Christian recording artist, the meaning of this song is obvious. They're talking about the fact that Christian celebrities are constantly in the spotlight, held up on a pedestal and at the same time under a microscope. God himself holds someone to a high standard when they put themselves out there as this type of representative for Him. The lyrics here are saying that even though the singer is still human and prone to make mistakes, and even though they know God will forgive them, there can be some serious damage done to their fans if and when they do stumble and fall.
by Sam Carmichael on 3/12/2009 10:48pm
I first heard this song when I was in 3rd grade...
At the time I didn't even understand the words the guy at the beginning was even saying, and the tune sounded cool...

Flash forward to my sophomore year in college, I come across my dc talk jesus freak album, put it in my macbook (the last time I played this album, it was on a bogus boom box in the 90s)

Hearing this song play for the first time since I was in 3rd grade was crazy. In third grade, I didn't have problems with the temptations I have now in my life. I had no worries back then, and now I look back at my years and I've screwed up just like everyone else cuz I'm human. This song is so powerful and at about the same time I pulled this CD out, I've started getting back to church. It's tough, but not impossible to live right and for Him.

gotta love dc talk for all they've done

Apparently the quote at the top is from Brennan Manning, for all those who were wondering.

Does are talk match our walk (and vice versa)?
Are we saying one thing and doing another?
Lots to think about here.
I think my poor niece was ruined by seeing her mom (my sister) go on about being a good Catholic and then she was so hateful and unforgiving to my niece. Very sad.
Now my niece is an atheist.
by Igor on 11/5/2009 3:21pm
I love this song. I will learn it and sing it in church.
