What If I Stumble Lyrics

Artist: DC Talk
Album: Intermission

"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today
Is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips
Then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

Is this one for the people? Is this one for the Lord?
Or do I simply serenade for things I must afford?
You can jumble them together, my conflict still remains
Holiness is calling, in the midst of courting fame
Cause I see the trust in their eyes
Though the sky is falling
They need Your love in their lives
Compromise is calling

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You never turn in the heat of it all
What if I stumble, what if I fall?

Father please forgive me for I can not compose
The fear that lives within me
Or the rate at which it grows
If struggle has a purpose on the narrow road you've carved
Why do I dread my trespasses will leave a deadly scar
Do they see the fear in my eyes? Are they so revealing?
This time I cannot disguise all the doubt I'm feeling

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

What if I stumble?
Everyone's got to crawl when you know that
You're up against a wall, it's about to fall
Everyone's got to crawl when you know that

I hear You whispering my name [You say]
"My love for You will never change" [never change]

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You never turn in the heat of it all
What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You are my comfort, and my God

Is this one for the people, is this one for the Lord?

I did stumble, as a pastor, I caved in. I was serenading for the things I must afford, when I gave in to lust. After a six year healing process, I am finally seeking to reenter vocational ministry. Praise The Lord for his forgiveness

These lyrics put me im my place...I call myself a Christian but I didn't realize how distant and cold I have become. This has made my heart melt and opened my eyes..I don't want people to wonder whether im a Christian or have to ask me, I want them to know it and feel it with the way I lead my life...I can't do this alone...
by alex malonda on 11/26/2008 3:34am
its awesome song!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Lynette on 12/19/2008 4:52pm
My sentiments exactly...people can point their boney fingers at us to shame us. God, however, redeems us and says: "I loved you first, now go and sin no more. I will forgive...trust in me; keep trying". This song really touches my heart, also. God bless.
by Mao on 2/19/2009 1:40pm
I would also like to know who said that first statement!!
by Jacinta on 3/2/2009 1:47am
This song is absolutely amazing.
by DanBillion on 3/10/2009 7:29am
As a former Christian recording artist, the meaning of this song is obvious. They're talking about the fact that Christian celebrities are constantly in the spotlight, held up on a pedestal and at the same time under a microscope. God himself holds someone to a high standard when they put themselves out there as this type of representative for Him. The lyrics here are saying that even though the singer is still human and prone to make mistakes, and even though they know God will forgive them, there can be some serious damage done to their fans if and when they do stumble and fall.
by Eli on 4/26/2009 10:28am
Apparently the quote at the top is from Brennan Manning, for all those who were wondering.

This song makes me cry everytime, but always reminds me of what's important
by Sad but True on 4/29/2010 9:19am
The opening line is reason #2 why I deny fundamental christainity. Reason #1 is their denial of factual, evidence-supported science.
by Say What? on 5/1/2010 9:29pm
"Sad but True"...please provide "evidence-supported" science.
by Michelle on 5/11/2010 2:13pm
The opening quote is from C.S. Lewis. Can't remember where exactly from, though.

Yeah, we will stumble. Just shows how much we need Him. And I think it's normal to wonder how that may scar non-believers. But we know that His Word will never come back empty. That's a promise. So you will be blessed for your efforts. And if people want to point fingers at Christians as the reason for not glorifying the one true God through Jesus--well, it's not like that's on a list of valid excuses God will be referencing on the Judgement Day. The opening quote is catchy and thought-provoking, but how can we assert its truth? Denial of the Almighty God surely has to go deeper than finger pointing. Just my thoughts...

by mackenzie on 2/11/2011 9:22am
i love this song so much
by Michael on 3/15/2011 2:13pm
I know the song and it is a good song with a great message, but the quote at the beginning is what makes it so relevant and inspiring. Wherever it came from, C.S. Lewis or whomever, it is as true and real as it gets. I myself am not a devout believer, but I do believe in The Golden Rule and Karma. Hypocrisy kills religious legitimacy in many undecided people's minds and it is sad that supposed believers are doing more harm than good to their "beliefs".
by Dave on 4/24/2011 4:15pm

Christians is why I'm agnostic , Christians havd put me at odds. With god , not Satan but Christians !!! I believe god comoletely disregards me and does care about what matters to me ! Christians told me god called me to be single to serve him , christians persecuted me with their outrageous opinons , Christians DO NOT speak on gods behalf !!!
by Jeff on 12/22/2011 6:37pm
The greatest single cause of Atheism in the world today isn't Christians, it's Atheists. They don't come to Christ because what fellowship has darkness with light? They don't come to the light lest their evil deeds be exposed to the light. Check the Bible before you swallow Satan's condemnation and lies about your faith. God calls us to obedience, but each will bear his own guilt regardless of what any of us does.
by Itwagobe Kauring on 4/7/2012 12:45pm

I am thinking about singing this for an audition for my school's praise band, but I never really knew the lyrics. Reading them was eye opening for me. I thank God for his forgiveness for all the mistakes I've made and will make. I challenge you to pray to God for guidance so that next time temptation comes your way, you may not stumble. God bless you!

it's been a long time since someone commented this is a proof God still using this song to touch people. Today I was feeling alone, without someone to give love. Then I felt this need for listen this song (My father used to listen it when i was a kid) then when i was listening i began to feel God's presence and i felt his love and i can say God is close to us all the time and He will give us all we need in HIS right time.
by Ashish The Drifter on 1/9/2014 10:50am
This song has been in my favorite list from past 10 years. Never deleted it from my mobile. Still agnostic but still love this song. So many replies on the page since my previous reply displays the awesomeness of this song. Thank you Sunder for introducing this song to me..... Peace!!!!
by Me on 3/4/2014 8:09pm
Kathryn, I am a Christian. I am so sorry that you feel the way you do. In my circumstances, if I look for the positives it will bring me closer to God. God gives me this choice. Turn yourself from the negatives in life...they are there to distract you. We all stumble, we all fall but the love of Jesus will never change....whisper His name and .....you will hear His voice....listen....
