Promised Land Lyrics
Artist: Chuck Berry
Album: Promised Land
Promised Land
I left my home in Norfolk Virginia,
California on my mind.
Straddled that Greyhound, rode him past Raleigh,
On across Caroline.
Stopped in Charlotte and bypassed Rock Hill,
And we never was a minute late.
We was ninety miles out of Atlanta by sundown,
Rollin' 'cross the Georgia state.
We had motor trouble it turned into a struggle,
Half way 'cross Alabam,
And that 'hound broke down and left us all stranded
In downtown Birmingham.
Straight off, I bought me a through train ticket,
Ridin' cross Mississippi clean
And I was on that midnight flyer out of Birmingham
Smoking into New Orleans.
Somebody help me get out of Louisiana
Just help me get to Houston town.
There's people there who care a little 'bout me
And they won't let the poor boy down.
Sure as you're born, they bought me a silk suit,
Put luggage in my hands,
And I woke up high over Albuquerque
On a jet to the promised land.
Workin' on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the Golden State;
The pilot told me in thirteen minutes
We'd be headin' in the terminal gate.
Swing low sweet chariot, come down easy
Taxi to the terminal zone;
Cut your engines, cool your wings,
And let me make it to the telephone.
Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia,
Tidewater four ten O nine
Tell the folks back home this is the promised land callin'
And the poor boy's on the line.

Did Chubby Checker cover this song?
One of Chuck's best. The ordinary man and his troubles.

"Smokin", best thing ole Chuck ever did.

Yes. Hadn't heard this one before. Glad Tarantino missed this gem!!!
Still the greatest road song( and best cover,by the Greatful Dead), in all of Rock and Roll. All Hail,Hail the Once and Aleays King,Good King Charles the Zfirst!
Of course, he copped the melody from "Wabash Cannonball." He always had a love of country music.
What an absolute genius Chuck Berry was, writing so many incredible songs with lyrics once heard never forgotten.
How many albums do you own with not one duff track on? I'll bet none... unless you own a copy of Chuck Berry's 20 Golden Greats. He truly is the Poet Laureate of Rock n Roll
Berry didn't write these lyrics.
Great story and song. Played it alot
Best version: Johnny Allen. Cajun heaven at Mustang pace - 1m57s.
The heck he didn't write this lyric. Where would you have gotten a stupid idea like that?
That turbo dude must be an idiot
Think Turbo may be right. Other sites consistently credit two other writers. Sure sounds like Chuck. Maybe he lost the credit in a court case?
"Promised Land" is a song lyric written by Chuck Berry to the melody of "Wabash Cannonball", an American folk song. The song was first recorded in this version by Chuck Berry in 1964 for his album St. Louis to Liverpool. Released in 1965, it was Berry's first single issued following his prison term for a Mann Act conviction.
Hey there, You have done a great job. I'll definitely digg it and personally recommend to dgedfcfcceecdcee
Nice read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing some research on that. And he just bought me lunch since I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that Thank you for lunch! Whenever you have an efficient government you have a dictatorship. by Harry S Truman. gkdbddagkeabkkkd
Hi there, I found your web site by the use of Google while searching for a similar matter, your site came up, it seems to be good. I've bookmarked it in my google bookmarks. ebeedbbkedfkfckb
Johnny a, only the last half of verse 7 is wrong. Whoever said this is the tune of Wabash Cannonball has never heard Wabash Cannonball. Both great song but not the same tune. Elvis left out the 2nd verse completely in his version. Great karaoke song. Thanks for the lyrics.
nice songs
They are both the same Chord sequence! Maybe different keys. 1, 4, 5...for those that know. Oh yes to say its a copy is like saying every single 12 bar song is a copy...absolutely pointless !
