Fool (If You Think It's Over) Lyrics

Artist: Chris Rea
Album: Whatever Happened To Benny Santini?

Dyin' flame, you're free again
Who could love, do that to you
All dressed in black, he won't be comin' back
Look, save your tears
Got years and years
The pains of seventeen's
Unreal they're only dreams
Save your cryin' for the day

Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the mornin' sun
Fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

Miss Teenage Dream, such a tragic scene
He knocked your crown and ran away
First wound of pride, and how you cried and cried
But save your tears, got years and years

Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why...

(Fool if you think it's over)
(Fool if you think it's over)

I'll buy you first good wine
We'll have a real good time
Save your cryin' for the day
That may not come
But anyone who had to pay
Would laugh at you and say

Fool if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first

I'm 57 and just remembered the song. One of my favorites from long ago. I downloaded it and listened while tears rolled down my cheeks.

I can relate Patti... Im 48 and this song always brings back memories and sometimes a sense of sadness, of all the loss and/or choices that we have made.

A timeless classic...It still can hurt even as you get older in life.
by Arlene on 3/23/2011 7:15am
I listen to this song time and time again. I never get tired of it.
by Famer on 4/27/2011 6:24pm
"All dressed in black. Does that mean he died???" "All dressed in black.." is a metaphor for mourning a love relationship that had died - in this instance, her first.

"New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the mornin' sun"
what does it means?
by gil on 8/17/2011 2:14pm
This song just reminds me of the times when being a kid was carefree and beautiful.
by Jody on 8/22/2011 12:39am
Newborn eyes always cry with pain at the first look at the morning sun - a baby's first view of the world. Letting her know that she's just starting out, that he empathizes, and for her not to waste too many tears on someone who is not worth them.

"Fool" is a song every woman listens to with bittersweet memories. And that sexy gravel pit voice is always so beautiful. My all time favorite song.
by Fred on 9/3/2011 12:59pm
Every teenager who had their heart broken over a love gone wrong has thought that the world was over.
The song is thematically similar to Reba McEntire's "For My Broken Heart" about a woman who thought that the world had ended because her marriage was ending.

What amazing lyrics from Chris Rea. Very touching song. Him playing the piano & singing is a great version. Only a musical genius can compose a touching song. Chria you my man. Manny Gounden, Durban, South AFrica

This song tell us about how deep is the human desire to be loved, so when a relationship between man and woman finish, then just begun a new stage in the same relationship. In the pain of love, everybody learn a new way to love. Thanks to the people that before me, has sended yours excellents comments. Bye !.

by Yvonne on 3/11/2012 11:49pm
I love this song! Why isn't it on iTunes? Rhapsody has re-recorded versions--but I can't locate the original version from 1978.
by Mc Rogi on 4/4/2012 5:12am
There are allways some rules of love,
some of them Chris Rea is touching :
- nobody want's to be fifth choice, never ever
- nobody is for :"May I ask You something ? Do You love me?" as soon as possible 'available'.
- everybody expects at least the question "Are You still free ?"
- ... there is much to do WRONG in preparing a love story.
by Loraine on 4/20/2012 3:00pm
For me, the song suggests that there will always be another love. You have to be able to move on and you will find the right love. I have. It took 58 years 8 months and 2 days. But without the others, you will not know what is the right love.
by John R on 5/24/2012 7:20pm
So many wonderful songs from the 70's. This is one of favorites, also Jefferson Starships song Miracles.
by Michael on 6/8/2012 5:01am
I love this song, in a different way though. There was a short period of time in my first real love when I thought I might lose her....then came this song. It fitted so well for me. It turns out my first love is my last one. We had a happy ending but I still love this song whenever I hear it -just love to refeel that sad feeling of young.
by Holly on 9/22/2012 7:51pm
Im 44. My true love passed away last year and I could hear this song in my head continuously. I knew the song but never really knew all the words. Wow!! Now that I have looked it up I believe he is with me always!!!

Awesome song- I'm only in my early 30s... was born the year after this song was released-- think I got to know it through listening to the car radio with my dad in mid 1980s... It touches even ME!
by Gwyn on 10/31/2012 2:33pm
My husband of 30 years passed away June 2011 and this song plays in my head constantly. Today I looked up the words, I don't know why, but somehow I am on here looking. I know he is watching over me, I feel his love still. One of the greatest songs ever!!!!! Awesome.
by Frank on 1/7/2013 10:48pm
It's so M

I'm listening to the song as I write this. I still think of my first love now and then, back in my high school days in the 80s, and how sad I was when we moved away and he eventually wrote me the letter telling me he had found someone else. I have finally accepted the fact that I will never get over him, and there is a kind of release in that. I am going through a divorce now, but now that I've looked these words up, there is a kind of healing that comes from knowing that the right one will come along that will be the reason all the others didn't work out. Love this song!

What a voice, what a song.
by Tommy on 5/15/2013 12:34am
First heard this song when released in summer of '78 while on a beach vacation where I met my 14 year old wife to be. When we went our separate ways home at the end of the week, I told her to remember this song especially the "just begun" part. People thought I was the fool for believing a 16 year old had found his true love.
That was 35 years ago and we'll celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary next month.
by Steve on 5/15/2013 10:00am
I had just left home, and my sweetheart, for two years of service in Oklahoma that summer of 1978. I remember hearing it repreatedly at the Hi Spot when I'd stop in for a cherry Sprite. For us, it ended up being over, and though I'm happily married now 35 years later, I remember with fondness the song and those tender feelings of loneliness and heartbreak. A true classic...extraordinary.
by Gary on 7/5/2013 12:46am
So the story goes, Chris Rea wrote this about his younger sister after the break up of her first serious relationship. I guess he's saying that you think the relationship is over but it's just the start when it comes to love. I liken it to almost a lullaby to his upset sister.
by Sparkina on 1/12/2014 10:41am
Yes, I read it was about Chris R.'s kid sis and her first parting. Partings hurt no matter how old you are, so IMO, the lyrics should have been
the pains that partings bring
they're a temporary thing

and

Miss Sweetheart Queen
Such a tragic scene

and not made references to specific age brackets
by Don Stump on 2/10/2014 8:49pm
Fool if you think,Was written for his little sister.
Tho agee w/pulling at those heart strings hidden for years..then some tears when Fool if you think enters ears again..
Love is never a temp thing..if it still pull on ya!
