Half Breed Lyrics

Artist: Cher

My father married a pure Cherokee
My mother's people were ashamed of me
The indians said I was white by law
The White Man always called me "Indian Squaw"

CHORUS:
Half-breed, that's all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, she's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

We never settled, went from town to town
When you're not welcome you don't hang around
The other children always laughed at me
"Give her a feather, she's a Cherokee"

Repeat Chorus

We weren't accepted and I felt ashamed
Nineteen I left them, tell me who's to blame
My life since then has been from man to man
But it can't run away from what I am

Repeat chorus

Third line of the song the word "that" is supposed to be before the word "I"

Cher looks fantastic in the video...and I agree with the "Obama" comparison.

Great song. Cher is half Armenian and half Cherokee. How cool is that? I saw her perform last Sat. in Vegas and she did it so cool, calm and collected, very proud. I love you honey.

i like Cher i think she has some very good songs, but she did run away from who she is. Cher was a beautiful Native American and she did not like herself so she went and had cosmetic surgery. She rejected her heritage and culture and destroyed her beautiful face and became an ugly white transvestite. ( i have nothing against transvestites) xox
by lulu on 7/22/2010 4:21am
if she was so proud why did she have cosmetic surgery?
by sam # 1 fan on 10/26/2010 2:38pm
lulu i bet you are fat white woman trashy ,or very ignorant full of envy

Who wrote the lyrics to this song?
by glen on 1/18/2011 4:45pm

cher has always been

beautiful, unfortunately

it's the industry she's in

that does people in. look

what happened to judy garland.

just because she changed

doesn't mean it doesn't still

hurt inside.

I can identify with this song because I am of a half breed myself. I identify with one nationality more then the other because I was raise with more of that culture then the other. I know both of my cultures but raised with one more then the other. Even so, I never felt as if I belong because I would and still to this day get starred at and people act different around me. The only people that accept me are those who know me and that's really not many.

I always liked Cher, however I think it's too bad she didn't make more of an effort to assist her son on Dancing With the Stars. After all, he's the only family she's got, and she shined by her ABSENCE night after night (except once). At 65, I think she has nothing else to prove (she's a great singer and also proved that she can be a movie star) and I think she can afford to make room in her busy schedule, to allow her the time to watch HER ONLY SON in a dancing competition that all the US and Canada watches. Chaz could have used his mother's support.

Cher still rocks She has been in my life a long time. In fact I GOT YOU BABE was played at my wedding way back 72 and I got married very young. Listen to her music she still loves Sony. Chaz/Chasity made there decison. So dont be so fast to judge her.Yes I'm a breed. And yes she has a lot of family left maybe not blood but FAMILY!!!

I have always identified with this song except one issue...instead of half-breed I'm mixed-breed. Papa was half Cherokee and half Blackfeet and Mama was half-Apatchee and half European (English, Irish, Dutch, Scotish and German)...talk about being on the warpath...I was raised in the white man's world being taught to deny my heritage but not I am PROUD to call myself a TRUE AMERICAN

To correct Vito for stating Cher is half Armenian and half Cherokee. She indeed is half Armenian but the remaining half comes from French, Dutch and Cherokee. Rather than be a half breed it appears she is more HEinz 57

I got the courage to listen to it and it spoke of things I have been conscious of in my life. It starts at family life when you become aware that neither mom nor dad cares for you, you're an embarrassment. This only prepares you for the world where you're not wanted here or there and you look for a place where you can hide. And your life is a constant war! Nobody tells you this but you soon come to realize. Life in the margins where you can find them. And you must be stronger and wiser than all to live and only a few understand and you don't want to trouble them...
