Brick Lyrics

Artist: Ben Folds Five
Album: Whatever And Ever Amen

6 am day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping
I am numb
Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte
they're not home to find us out
And we drive
Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
they call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Then she ever has before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time to tell the truth
She broke down and I broke down
Cause I was tired of lying
Driving home to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
She's alone
I'm alone
Now I know it

its about the girl having an abortion, now theyre both alone knowing they wont have the kid.
by joneybunch on 6/24/2008 2:50am
It's about falling out of love with someone. You cant keep the relationship if youre no longer inlove with each other.
by ty on 7/26/2008 3:41pm
actually joney, i believe t is right on this one.....

Well ... to me, I don't know that either of them was really ever that much in love with the other. But definitely the girlfriend has an abortion (that the boyfriend seemingly did not want her to have, hence the line, "It's not me you're dying for"), and they're both left empty by the whole experience. ... The abortion leaves the girl emotionally scarred, but the boyfriend/singer is not able to be supportive. They're still together (though for how much longer is debatable at the end of the song) but they are emotionally worlds apart.

its about the girl having an abortion

Singer recalls taking his high-school girlfriend to get an abortion -- on the day after Christmas, no less.

Means she's "solid" for going through with it. As opposed to the "wet blanket" she might be were she to demur on the whole idea.

Death is never the answer.

Abortion is a GOP policy, make no mistake about it. (Check GH Bush as head of the "Earth Resources & Task Force" and his Summer of Love appearances in the Congressional Record talking about "genetic quality" and breeding humans like "cattle" ... I shit you not.

Anyone who believes in "Choice" has been had ... by the Dems who sold them out to the GOP. Good cop bad cop, kiddies. Dummy up.

I think her being balled up on the couch when he finds her shows that she is against the abortion. I believe the line "she's a brick and i'm drowning slowly" indicates hopelessness. Think of it as being tied to a heavy brick and sinking deeper and deeper into water. I believe it's representative of the situation they're in. She doesn't want the abortion and he wants it over with as soon as possible and she's almost weighing him down. The fact that he gets up and throws some clothes on i think examplifies that he doesn't care, or that he just wants the abortion over. THEN when he says "i was tired of lying" it MIGHT mean that he tricked her into the abortion...but not really sure...

I definitely don't think that she was agaist the abortion, they both knew it needed to happen. She was "balled up on the couch" because she was sad that she needed to make this decision. Even if you believe in Choice, it can't be an easy choice to make. They were both alone because even though they both agreed with the final decision, it isn't something that you can really, i mean REALLY talk to about with each other. There is no way you can understand what someone goes through after that. And they were tired of "lying" to her parents. Obviously, they were keeping it from them and the parents were catching on. She's a brick because she already sank and he is sinking slowly. Also, this is to comment on the song, not to talk about your political views.

better to split up, they're both sinking together..

The song is about abortion. She had one. They're both alone. It's not about love or politics. The girl had an abortion.

Young girl has an abortion. Both did not want the abortion, but felt they were trapped because they didn't want to tell their parents. They're both drowning by their decision that didn't feel right to them. She's a brick because he couldn't change her mind. They're still together at the end, but probably not much longer since the situation has hurt them greatly.

Interesting takes on this song. I actually lived this, with the exception of day after Christmas, but it was Christmas time. My take on this is that neither want to do it, but I think she is set on it. With that being said I think he is taking this harder and this may not totally be his choice. I think this a song he wrote for his unborn child. "can't you see it's not me your dying for....". Maybe I am wrong, but it sure seems like it. Also, I believe that it was their difference in opions about the way the situation was handled that caused the guilt to be a permanent wedge in their relationship. Either way, powerful song........
