Copacabana Lyrics
Artist: Barry Manilow
Copacabana (At the Copa)
-Artist: Barry Manilow as sung on "Greatest Hits" -Arista A2L 8601
-peak Billboard position # 8 in 1978
-Words and Music by Barry Manilow, Bruce Sussman, and J. Feldman
Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across a crowded floor, they worked from 8 till 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....they fell in love
(Copa Copacabana)
His name was Rico, he wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancin' there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....she lost her love
(Copa. . Copacabana)
(Copa Copacabana) (Copacabana, ahh ahh ahh ahh)
(Ahh ahh ahh ahh Copa Copacabana)
(Talking Havana have a banana)
(Music and passion...always the fash--shun)
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind!
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....don't fall in love
(Copa) don't fall in love
Copacabana
Copacabana
etc. to end

That song is the best song I have every heard! The sad part is when Tony dies and Lola loses her love. Thanks for the best song ever.

The song is fine, too bad Barry Manilow thought that Copacabana was in Havana, it is actually in RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL!!!
i thought the lyrics were different!
actually fredshu the song was written about a night club in new york city
i luv this song
I LOVE THIS SONG AS YOU DON'T HAVE IDEA
The words are "many yeas ago" not "30 yeas ago"
So true Barry, don't fall in love
"Etc. to end" just says it all.
The melody and rhythm is something very happy; however, the lyrics is so sad, tragic; a Latin history with passion dance and death.
We had a patient at work named Lola . My friend & I have been singing this song ever since!!!!
it's tells of a love story and a tragic ending so heart breaking. All in one song!
Hi
flargsitjdfn
For some reason I was singing this one night while giving my 2 year old son a bath, now he thinks it's a lullaby.
sad ending, but before learning english , i loved the record, now i probably won't sing it again

I just tear this song up at all the karaoke bars. Good song but sad.
I love that song it is so good you guys should the acual song insted of just the lyrics
this is the best yet saddest song i have heard ever!!!
for "fredshu". Copacabana, famous NY City night club! And there were probably more around the world. It's a song (and a great one), not a history lesson.
haha i named my chickesn (yes, i have a pet chicken) "lolabird" after that song!!!!
I LOVE this song SOOO much! It's great for karaoke parties ;)
Actually in response to fredhu's comment, he says it's north of Havana. Love this song! <333
Here's a metalhead for Manilow. This is one of his best tunes this side of "Mandy". A lot of folks make fun of Manilow, but not a lot of them realize that one of his biggest hits was rather violent.
Hail Barry!
This song is refreshing. I love it!
I danced with my love a lot on that lovely song!
When I was six I told my mom I wanted to be a dancer. She sent me to ballet lessons and I nearly cried, cos what I meant was "showgirl" but I didn't know what the right word was. That was in '75, and it was only after I heard this song that I figured out where I went wrong!!!
I still can't dance!
ABOUT COBACABANA, I AM SURE THIS SONG WAS FIRST OUT IN THE FILM COBACABANA IN THE 40'S, I DON'T BELEIVE IT IS BARRY MANILOW'S CREATION. POSSIBLEY STARRING CARMEN MIRANDA. I LOVED THE SONG AS A CHILD I WAS ALWAYS SINGING IT AND DANCING TO IT. SO THAT WHEN BARRY SUPPOSEDLY BROUGHT IT OUT I COULD SING IT WITHOUT EVER GOING OR HEARING THE SONG BY BARRY ALL THE WAY THROUGH. APPRECIATE TO HEAR IF ANYONE KNOW'S MORE.
wow
em its ok [the song]
???????????????????????????????????????????????
Copa is the Family Wedding
sing-a-long song!!!
So, Terri. It was an original Barry Manilow creation. In an interview some years ago, he said that the song had taken on a life of its own. He even made a lousy movie based on the song. It's an infectious tune ang great for the
Conga line!!
i love this song
Its 30 years ago not many years ago whoever said that.
I love all the "insane" songs. Copa, Angie Baby, She's not there, A little unwell, She's come undone ...
I WHET TO SEE THIS WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL.
We are doing this as a peformance at our school and I am one of the dancers and singers at the Copcabana
This song rocks!! One of my best mates played Lola in the musical last year - she was awesome!!

I just wanted to give a shout out to my best buds Jess and Dani... We sang and danced to this song for a free poster at a concert about 5 years ago... I hope one day they will see this and smile :) This song is a part of many great memories I will never forget it :)
I always thought it was a fun song, guess I never really listened in after the chorus, it is so SAD :(

It's the best song i've hear ever before!! love Paula
love it love it love it!!
i luv it i dance and am doin it 4 a solo

I read all the lyrics and now I think it is sad. I just adopted a B&G Macaw and her name is Lola and I wanted to sing it to her...but it is in the end a sad tale.
piece of heaven
i dont get it. who shots who
I heard this song for the very 1st time on one of the episodes of "FRIENDS"(the one with Barry & Mindy's wedding)and I automatically fell inlove with the song and I live in Nigeria for Christ's Sake! Thank you Mr. Mannilow.
Fredshu - IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK! what do you know about geography anyway? Just because the Brazilian Copacabana is the only one your dismal mind has ever heard of does not mean than Manilow is factually incorrect. So put that in your pipe and have a big old puff!
Well, Miss Kylie Minogue recently performed a very classy version of this song for her X-Tour, and I have to admit that Copacabana was one of the best parts of the concert. Greetings from Lima-Peru!
it is my cousin's name

I heard this song in an airport and I couldn't get it out of my head so I thought I'd check out the lyrics. Jeez -- what a mess! And I still can't get it out of my head!
there is a musician who performs near me who goes by the name of "Rico Wore A Diamond". i think he took it from the second verse.

Absolutely classy. I heard it at a theater production at my school, sung with a bit more baritone; I fell in loooove, in short. It's interesting to see what other singers do to the song when they sing it.
I reiterate: absolutely classy.

Actually, the song is about the Copacabana club(also known as Copa), which is in the USA(NY);this is why B.M. says in the song that it is "the hottest spot NORTH of Havana"
After watching Barry Manilow's songs of the 70's on Public Television, I had to listen to read the lyrics. Great song.

At the Bonehead -- YOU HAVE NO CLUE
My bird, Kiwi, a 5-year old Lilac Crowned Amazon parrot, LOVES this song! The first time he heard it, he heard the word "feathers" in the lyrics and it has been "our song" ever since! He gets a romantic look in and pinpoints and flashes his eyes throughout the song, fully puffs out all his feathers, whistles the tune and speaks the "feather" words. It's unbelievable how into this song my bird is! I truly think he believes it's all about him, as we constantly tell him how pretty his feathers are. LOL!!! - Kiwi's Mom
One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post in regards to Kiwi, the Lilac Crowned Amazon Parrot who is in love with this song is that he has only heard the Henry Mancini version of the song, which is VERY VERY VERY theatrical. If you haven't heard the Henry Mancini version, and you like the original song, then GET READY! You are going to LOVE this version! It is incredibly AMAZING! My bird Kiwi (and I) just can't get enough of it! We listen to it every single night at bedtime. It's our bedtime ritual!!! Plus, the repetition helps my parrot learn the tune and words more each time he hears it. :o) Thank you Barry Manilow for such an awesome masterpiece!
To find this version of the song, you can search Napster, iTunes, Google, etc. for: Henry Mancini Readers Digest Music Copacabana. You will NOT regret it, even if you have to purchase the entire album just for that one song. IT IS SOOOOOOO WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We love this song so much that all we want to do is wear our chaps thruout the house.
Best song ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They don't write them like this anymore; what a story. True poetry!
before a Copacabana in Brasil was one in Havana. Remember there is always a Saturday before Sunday.

Yes there was a copacabana in cuba and it is a beach in Rio, but for those who didn't know the Copacabana wasn't in Cuba or Brazil. It was a night club in New york City. It was written by Jack Feldman, Barry Manilow, and Bruce Sussman and was a debut in 1978.

Vic Mignogna sang this song to Travis Willingham only it was "TravisCabana" instead of "Copacabana." It was the greatest thing ever!!

I'm gonna' sing this tomorrow night at a Spanish restaurant in Queens, NY, except Lola will be changed to Rosa, Tony will be changed to Robert (me) and Rico will be changed to Miguel (the guy Rosa dumped me for). She and all of her friends will be there and since I can actually sing, I'm gonna' KILL with this!
omg i sung this in friends it was soo funny
I KILLED with my rendition! During the merengue interlude I said "C'mon Rosa, dance with the dead guy!" She did but I didn't get the girl back...:(
The Copacabana is nothing. What matters is your health. I have been wracking my brain trying to send you a message. Please, eat! I'm an Italian and you know what they say. We love to feed people. But, not as much as I would like to get some ravioli into you. It hurts me personally to see you this way. I couldn't care less about your career and money and songs. All I want to see is that you are well fed, well rested, healthy and happy. My name was Maria. I really care about you. Agape Love.
I want to say I'm sorry. You may not understand, and for all I know, it may not apply. But, I feel it just the same, and I've needed to tell you. Get better please. AMA
This is one of the first songs i learnt the words to...gotta admit, i used to be addicted to singing it!!! XD <3
A response to EL TEL - I'm not Fred, but heeyy.. you're being too rude and unpolite, don't you think? His opinion doesn't matter more or less than yours, okay :)
And yes, Copacabana's a beach in Brazil - Rio de Janeiro. (it's beautiful btw, i've been there twice:) When I first heard the name of the song, I thought he was talking about Rio's Beach too, or some nightclub in the region in Rio, that's also known as Copacabana.
But anyway, he didn't say anything that's rude or stupid. He just didn't know the right place where Copa was located. U didn't need to tell him to shup like that. So here's what I wanted to say: respect to be respected. Thanks ;)
Dear TERRI; I happen to know for sure that this song was partly written by Barry Manilow and that it was long after the 1940's and Carmen Meranda. Don't ask me how I know, I just do. Let's just say that I have personal information, and that he was the first to sing it in the late 70's. By the way Barry, the music is just fabulous. You do good work, and I'm glad you wrote it. AMA
gracias

Her Name was lola, she had a boner
love this song
I have had this song in my head for about three months now,day and night, over and over. I focus on the chorus somehow. Hoping that having read all the words now, my mind will be happy and move on...maybe Billie Jean or something more current...
Glad Dave's dead! Should have had far more sense than to make an appearance in a song this shite.
OMG love the bit about the bum truffles. Frog seemed highly amused when Tony signed off.
Frog is my close friend.
No I'm not. Leave me alone. Said the judge.
WTF?
Loooooove thus song!!!!! My life started for real I mean for REAL when I 1st herd it it's so good I get dirty thoughts about my Latin teachers shoes. He's called tony by the way. can i sing a song
OMG, I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!
Fredshu doesn't know that before Castro, modern Vegas, and present day Miami; Havanna, Cuba was the hottest destination for partying in the Americas. The song does not claim that there was a place in Havana named Copacabana. So put two and two together, Fred... "the hottest spot NORTH of Havanna"
this is a very nice song it shows music and passion . :)
Nice sound, but I feel like crying listening *sniff*
Sad song.... ive heard the song before but never realy listened to it properly! Coolest thing is... im actually going copacabana this weekend!! Yay!!! Looking forward to the awesome brazilian floor shows!
i loved all the words he used and how he made them rhyme
i love this song it so sad though
Awesome love it
Barry is such a great entertainer & singer. I should know because I am (still) a musician. Its a miracle was the theme song when our hockey team won the cup. The Goaldiggers won the Turner Cup in 1975. We called it "The Miracle On Main Street" Thanks Barry keep it going will you. Thanks Sam
So for the geography lesson...hottest spot NORTH of Havana would not be Brasil. There was a Copacabana in New York in the 40's. Was noted for the most beautiful show girls...for the history lesson part... was of the same era as the Stork Club and the El Morocco...who knows what club Barry was basing this on...lol..great song and once it's in your head...really, really hard to get it out
cool song
cool song
Nice song reminds me by friends
I've had this song in my head for months... used to know all the words, but that was 30 years ago when I used to disco dance, so I figured I could find the lyrics online and I just did! Now I can tell my kids who will probably laugh cause they think I'm weird, but I think theyll like the song.
"These lyrics were transcribed from the specific recording mentioned above
and do not necessarily correspond with lyrics from other recordings, sheet
music, songbooks or lyrics printed on album jackets. "
Who shot! Who???
This remind me to homer simpson eating ketchup in his car dancing to this song
My name is Lola, I'm not a show girlHer name was Lola, she was a showgirl
no yellow feathers in my hair and no dress cut down to there
I love merengue and do the cha-cha
no really my name is lola....lol..some guy used to sing this song to me cause my name is lola...such a sad song...
In response to christina, Lol Rico shot tony!
Best song ever
I'm 9 and I'm OBSESSED with this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In response to Vibiana, your kids will (probably) like it
Love Barry Manilow
love this song
Someone called the song weird. I'd say it is a very mixed song: the very moody 9th chords of the verses convey the drama, especially in the interlude after the shooting, while the sweet7th chords in the chorus make it sound like a commercial (Barry's specialty) for the nightclub. Really clever to alternate like that.
Typical sound of seventies
This. Is good
This is the favorite song of my 4years daughther.
I went to a concert of his on Sunday and it was so awesome 1st row! Love u barry, any way that song is so awesome the best ever
I just want to clear my name...Tony pulled out a knife I shot him in self defense.. I also did not 'go a bit to far'...Tony was just overbearing and overly jealosy...Im innocent
I like the song it's perfect on me. I always sing this song as my finale. Thanks barry. We enjoy the concert last June 30.we sleep over in the hotel and go swimming pool after the concert. Then following morning and we checking out and went to the mall a good home home in the afternoon of the same day, we listens the whole barry's album . while driving to home. My kids fall asleep and I drive to the freeway busy but the sound ds fell hood for us. GOD BLESS US AND BARRY. PLS REPLY.
Could this song be the most commented one ?
I really love this song. Until now I can't sing coz I can't memorize yet. Hopefully soon. Looks like we made it and even now.
Thx 4 the story ...
COPACABANA, A VERY FAMOUS NIGHT CLUB IN NYC ABOUT 70 YEARS AGO, THE HOTTEST PLACE IN AMERICA AFTER HAVANA, WHICH WAS PRACTICALLY PROPERTY OF THE US IN THE 40´S. "...NORTH OF HABANA..." WAS JUST A RHYME FOR COPACABANA. IN HAVANA THERE IS A FAMOUS HOTEL CALLED COPACABANA AND A VERY FAMOUS CABARET CALLED TROPICANA, THAT´S WHY ALL THAT CONFUSION. IT DEFINITELY TALKS ABOUT THE NYC´S COPACABANA. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HAVANA, CUBA. NEITHER WITH THE VERY FAMOUS BEACH COPACABANA IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRASIL.
I heard that song in Silverwood Idaho last summer 😛
Very nice song, great lyrics, nowadays it's too easy to get the lyrics (I am from Peru) and understand the songs, great song ever

Even though I love rock and metal I freaking love this song too! Why not? It's a good tune.
Love the song. Sounds very upbeat. I hate the end though when we leave Lola in the state that she is in. Felt really sorry for her. I believe that the film and musical versions have a happier ending though.
