Reckless Lyrics

Artist: Australian Crawl
Album: Reckless

Meet me down by the jetty landing
Where the the pontoons bump and sway
I see the others reading, standing
As the Manly Ferry cuts its way to Circular Quay
Hear the Captain blow his whistle
So long she's been away
I miss our early morning wrestle
Not a very Happy way to start the day
She don't like That kind of behaviour
She don't like That kind of behaviour

So, throw down your guns
Don't be so reckless
Throw down your guns
Don't be so

Feel like Scott of the Antarctic
Base camp too far away
A Russian sun beneath the Arctic
Burke and Wills and camels
Initials in the tree
She don't like That kind of behaviour
She don't like That kind of behaviour

So, throw down your guns
Don't be so reckless
Throw down your guns
Don't be so

by Andrew C on 6/22/2008 12:19am
The song you sing in Sydney town
by Vanya on 8/5/2008 8:44pm
"where the pontoons bump and sway" should be "spray"
by Cam on 8/20/2008 8:21pm
I think you'll find the correct lyrics are "A Russian 'sub' beneath the Arctic", given that it's a Gorbechev era song.
Cheers from Australia.
by Some Bogan on 10/18/2008 11:14pm
This is a great song aye... I agree with the Russian sub and the bob and spray bit... Good work though thanks for putting these up :)

Should be Scott on the antarctic, i Think
by David on 12/31/2008 5:41pm
Leonid Brezhnev was the President of the USSR when this magnificent song was released. Gorbachev was not even in the picture, as Leonid was followed by Chernenko and Andropov.
by CaiqueDoBrasil on 2/17/2009 4:46am
Clássicos são eternos. "Russian subs" for sure...
by Chrisman on 3/18/2009 1:28pm

i think "A Russian sun" should be "A Russian SUB" but i could be wrong
by Queenslander on 6/10/2010 11:12pm
Tony Strong... stupid man, stupid man, stupid man. Oh did I mention that you're stupid :) Aussie Rock Rocks.
by Ngaere on 7/28/2010 9:49am
Tony Strong - Are you Australian? From Sydney? The references conveying emptiness and isolation, capturing a moment: you may not like it, but it is truly classic.
It's definitely Scott of the Antarctic (see Robert Falcon Scott).
by Westy on 8/16/2010 6:40am
Stalin was in charge when this was written. It refers to the Russian sub S-13 that sank the MV Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945.
by Is it that hard to check facts? on 10/6/2010 8:39pm
Depending on when it was actually written (1982? early 1983?), Brezhnev or Andropov would have been in charge, esp. given that Stalin died in the '50s, about 4 years before James Reyne was even born.

As the General Secretary, Brezhnev was directly replaced by Andropov in Nov 1982.

As for the Chairmen of the Presidium, that went from Brezhnev to Kuznetsov (acting, interim) to Andropov between Nov 1982 and mid 1983. Chernenko didn't enter the picture here till 1984.

I ask you, though I doubt you'll read this, what compels someone who hates a song to take the time to look it up, and talk sh!t about it. it tells me, Tony, you and others like you have problems, serious problems..
As for the song, yes it is "Like Scott on the Antarctic" and "Russian Sub beneath the Arctic" (I am playing the song right now as I type this)
by thisguy on 12/15/2010 9:09am
this song is fucking sick mann! its seriously good man..freaky shit man!

Tony, ram it up your arse sideways
Your a total drongo with no sense of what the lyrics mean.
Your probably one of those indonesian islamic pricks that have been posting crap on websites about anything australian, scumbag.
by babyboomer on 2/23/2011 6:01am
I think the Russian sub line is a reference to the Cold War exploration of the Arctic by nuclear submarines. It fits with the other explorer references - lonely and dangerous expeditions in unmapped territory.
by Tony The Punching Bag on 2/28/2011 5:36am
Tony...Fuck YOU very much!
by Jimmy on 3/6/2011 3:11am
Isn't this missing a verse or two?
by LOLz Tony the drongo on 4/6/2011 3:48am
What you say would help if you actually use words in their right context. the your means a belonging. You meant You're as in You are. You argument will gain merit when you use the right context.
by Grover Jones on 4/6/2011 10:26pm
A wonderful song, and Reyne has done a new acoustic version which was just played on the ABC.
We used to sing along:
"Don't eat your breakfast, throw down your fork!"
by Brad and Stacey on 4/13/2011 9:18am
Firstly, Tony...get fukd... you're a tool, could you write better metaphores...heres one for you - stay on the ferry coz we're launching an Aussie 'sub' this time to blow you sky high...like the game battleship hahaha.
On a better note, this song rocks, all time Aussie great, only true Aussies would know exactly what James was meaning here, and therefore able to appreciate the finesse of what we have. great lyrics, hehe they make me feel 'appy'
by Will Hawk on 5/30/2011 5:34am
I remember hearing this song as a teenager, and the very next day as I was waiting for the ferry, I remember 'pontoons bump and spray'. That set the scene perfectly, and was a fab description. It's a classic Aussie song. Tony Strong you are a total tosser. You would not know talent if it bit you on the arse.
by KW on 6/10/2011 4:07am
Hey, Tony Strong. Go listen to some Lady Gaga champ. LOL
by kw on 6/10/2011 4:23am
Better yet Tony, maybe some Bieber. You might be able to get his lyrics. "Baby, bay, bay, yeah..oooh"

God its the Aussie racist pricks like you we don't want in our country. Xenophobe. Let me guess you boycott Vegemite because it's got a Halal symbol on it. HAHA.

Tony Strong - what a wanker!!

Awesome song....awesome aussie band.....awesome memories....

Wonder what you're listesting to!!

by Rattie on 11/6/2012 8:42am
nope, its Scott OF the antarctic... he was always referred to as such after his ill fated expedition..there was even a movie of the same name.

AWESOME song about the loneliness of being separated from the one you love ... living that now, and play this every day to help me get through.
by Neeraj Tulsian on 11/19/2012 6:23pm
Lovely song. The words are beautiful as is the haunting guitar and violin sound. I've loved this song since it came out in 82/83.

Discovering the meaning with you all after reading your comments.

Thanks Aussie Crawl.
by Gus Wilkens on 12/25/2012 12:27pm
I own the Ep of semantics with the original lyric sheet, so here it is.

Meet me down by the jetty landing
Where the pontoons bump and spray
All the others reading standing
As the manly ferry cuts its way to circular quay
Here the captain blow his whistle
So long she's been away
I miss our early morning wrestle
Not a very happy way to start the day

REFRAIN (She don't like that kind of behaviour
She don't like that kind of behaviour)

CHORUS
So throw down your guns
Don't be so reckless (twice)

Feel like scott of the antarctic
Base camp too far away
A russian sub beneath the artic
Burke and wills and camels
Initials in the tree

REFRAIN
CHORUS
by Lisa on 1/11/2013 12:19pm
It has so much more meaning with the correct punctuation! The conversation thread until this point is hilarious, Tony IS a tosser so flick off! ;-)
by Grant of Pine ave Glenelg Nth SA on 1/23/2013 9:59am
Tony next you will start telling us AC/DC s Long Way To The Top was filmed on a combie in Western Subs of Sydney...!
You are a right royal COCKHEAD !
by davo on 4/15/2013 5:54pm
Thanks gus for the original sheet and your right lisa, the song does take on some new meaning with the correct punctuation

And you're a dickhead tony!!!!
by Greggie on 5/3/2013 5:05am
I love the acoustic version of this classic Australian song - the rendition at the Apia Time of My Life Concert was fantastic too - Tony the Total Tosser has been quiet since his dopey comments were posted.
by Laughing on 5/21/2013 5:14am
All you idiots are no smarter than Tony appears. He has made a comment and wound all of you up very nicely! Why even respond? Can't believe how many responses to Tony instead of sharing our thoughts on this amazing song.
by glenn on 7/11/2013 4:06am
the structure of reckless is based on the poetry of keats, has no one else noticed that! it shows that Rayne did,nt write the song for idiots!
by Ken on 8/19/2013 10:15am
I always though it was 'missiles in the trees' in line with the russian sub and maybe some reference to pine gap which was pretty controversial at that time. I guess 'initials' makes sense, however I will always here it as 'missiles' Quintessential aussie music, you can have that word for free.
by Bill on 10/12/2013 2:57am
Will. That's an awesome story. And to everyone else, lets all take a well deserved crap on Tony Strong........ah, that feels better. :-)
by Barbara on 1/2/2014 6:01am
Is anyone here aware of the hidden message. The reference to throwing down guns and the isolation.
by Herb on 1/2/2014 7:53am
Love it or hate it, understand it or not, know the facts or be distant, it certainly brought all sorts of minds together here. Not a genuine reflection of the song but at least we're free to be at odds or together or anything in between and be able to wake the next morning and move on to what each of us do to be free.
by MickAmmo on 1/13/2014 10:01am
- Guy McDonough died in mid '80's, taking the lyric meanings with him. We will never know. However, like all art, the interpretation is part of the appreciation- meaning we can interpret the lyrics for ourselves too.
by Steelo on 4/17/2014 4:00am
Five years on and Tony's still getting it in the neck ... awesome song
